To keep playing a Game Pass title after it leaves the library, buy that specific game. A Game Pass download is catalog access, not ownership: Xbox says access ends when the subscription expires or the game leaves the library. Check the exact platform edition and current store listing before buying.
What happens when a game leaves Game Pass?
Game Pass lets members access games in its library while their subscription is active and the games remain in the catalog. When a title leaves, its catalog access ends; having downloaded it does not mean you own it. Xbox describes the access period in its Game Pass terms and overview.

How to keep playing the game
- Check the departure announcement. Xbox says it confirms leaving titles in regular Xbox Wire posts and mobile notifications. Its guidance does not establish a guaranteed number of days’ notice, so check the listing and announcements for the particular game. Xbox Wire’s November 17, 2020 guidance also mentions using a member discount to buy an exiting title before it leaves; it does not establish a current discount percentage or today’s tier terms.
- Find the exact game in the relevant store. Check whether the listing is for Xbox console or Windows PC and whether it is the edition you want. Do not assume a purchase on one platform grants access on another.
- Compare the current price and availability. If a member discount appears, compare the displayed price with the current regular price. Availability and pricing depend on the specific game and listing; a game may not remain available to buy after it leaves the catalog.
- Buy the game itself. Once you own the applicable edition, you can continue playing under that purchase’s platform terms, rather than relying on its Game Pass listing.
Does buying add-ons keep the game playable?
No: add-ons are not a substitute for owning the base game. Dovetail Games support says players need to purchase a title to keep playing after it leaves Game Pass, even if they bought add-ons while it was included. That is guidance for Dovetail titles, not a universal statement about every game’s licensing or add-on behavior. Dovetail Games support

What to verify before purchasing
- Edition and platform: confirm the game version and whether it runs on your Xbox console or Windows PC.
- Progress: check the game’s publisher or platform support for save transfer and continued access to existing saves.
- DLC: check the game’s own support information to confirm how add-ons work with the edition you plan to buy.
- Physical availability: a disc is an option only if that particular game has a physical edition for your console. Do not assume one exists.
Exact prices, post-removal store availability, physical editions, save behavior, offline rules, and cloud-streaming entitlements cannot be determined without the specific game, platform, and region. Check the game’s current store listing and its publisher or platform support for those details.
