Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To measure your car’s exhaust noise at home, use a sound level meter outdoors and keep the microphone position, engine speed, meter settings and surroundings consistent. A carefully repeated stationary reading is useful for comparing changes; it is not a certified legal test and cannot show the car’s maximum noise under real driving load.
What you need for a useful home reading
- A sound level meter: Choose one that displays A-weighted decibels (dB(A)). A stable microphone position matters more than collecting a single headline number. A stand or tripod helps; a tachometer is optional if you cannot otherwise record engine speed.
- A tape measure or marked stand position: Use it to reproduce the microphone’s distance and height.
- A safe outdoor location: Find an open area away from walls, parked vehicles and other sound-reflecting surfaces.
- A way to note conditions: Record the meter model and settings, engine speed, microphone geometry, readings and surrounding conditions.
The UK Department for Transport’s 2019 report describes a formal procedure using an IEC 61672-1:2013 Class 1 sound level meter on a stand, with a windshield and appropriate corrections where needed. A consumer meter—or a phone app—can help with indicative comparisons, but should not be presented as a formal result unless its suitability and calibration are established. Set up the test safely
Choose the location
Measure outside, on a level, open surface. The Department for Transport report’s description of ISO 5130 calls for no large reflective objects within 3 m of the microphone and every point of the vehicle. That is a condition of the described formal procedure, not a guarantee that any driveway with that spacing is suitable. If walls, fences or nearby vehicles are likely to reflect sound, choose another spot.
Prepare the car
Bring the engine to normal operating temperature. The procedure described in the report has the engine compartment closed and the air conditioner off. Keep the transmission in neutral and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe stationary operation; do not interfere with an automatic cooling fan or exceed the vehicle’s permitted stationary RPM. Never run the engine in an enclosed garage.

Position the microphone
For the ISO 5130-style geometry described in the report, place the microphone 0.5 m from the exhaust outlet, 45 degrees from the exhaust centre line, at exhaust height and at least 0.2 m above the ground. Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/1705 specifies 0.5 ± 0.01 m and 45° ± 5° for its stationary measurement geometry. These are formal-method details, not a reason to attempt a legal test without checking the procedure that applies to your vehicle and location. At home, measure and mark your chosen position so it is repeatable.
Keep yourself safely to the side, outside the exhaust stream and clear of hot components and moving parts. Do not stand directly behind the tailpipe.

Take repeatable readings
- Set the meter consistently. Use dB(A) and note the meter’s time-response setting and any other settings. Do not compare readings taken with different weighting or response settings as though they were equivalent.
- Record the engine-speed condition. Do not assume idle is an adequate substitute for a prescribed test speed, and do not blip the throttle unpredictably. Formal methods determine test speed according to vehicle category and rated engine speed. The Department for Transport report gives these examples for categories M/N: 75% of rated speed where rated speed is at or below 5,000 RPM; 3,750 RPM where rated speed is between 5,000 and 7,500 RPM; and 50% where rated speed is at or above 7,500 RPM. They describe that specific procedure—not universal home instructions. Follow the vehicle maker’s safe stationary-test guidance.
- Measure under the same condition each time. Keep the car state, microphone distance, angle and height, meter settings and surroundings fixed. Record whether you are measuring a steady engine speed or another condition, such as deceleration.
- Repeat the measurement. The ISO 5130 procedure described in the 2019 report uses the maximum recorded level and repeats the test until three consecutive measurements are within 2 dB LAmax of one another; it then takes their arithmetic average. For a home comparison, keep every reading and report the average or range rather than hiding variation in one number.
Write down the date, readings, engine speed, microphone position, meter and settings, and relevant ambient conditions. If you change exhaust parts or compare two cars, change only the factor you mean to assess; otherwise the difference may come from the setup rather than the exhaust.

SAE J1492, revised November 2023, describes a stationary A-weighted exhaust measurement over a range of engine speeds. It does not establish a method for measuring realistic engine load or set a general noise limit for vehicle categories; SAE points to J2805 for methods consistent with realistic loads and speeds. SAE J1492 scope
There is no universal decibel threshold that makes a home reading proof that a car is legal. Limits, vehicle classes, test conditions, meter requirements, rounding and enforcement procedures depend on jurisdiction and may vary by vehicle type. For a compliance question, check the rules and official test procedure for your location rather than relying on a driveway reading.
