Protect the pipes most exposed to cold before temperatures drop: drain outdoor lines, insulate accessible plumbing, and locate your main water shutoff. During a cold snap, keep the home steadily heated, open cabinets around pipes, and let a faucet drip if it serves an exposed line. If water slows to a trickle, treat it as a possible freeze and warm the pipe gently—never with an open flame.

Which pipes are most likely to freeze?

Water expands as it freezes, creating pressure that can split metal or plastic plumbing. Pipes are most vulnerable where they are exposed to cold or separated from heated rooms by little insulation.

  • Outdoor hose bibs, pool supply lines, and sprinkler lines.
  • Pipes in unheated basements, crawl spaces, attics, and garages.
  • Plumbing beneath kitchen or bathroom cabinets.
  • Pipes running along poorly insulated exterior walls or near where the water service enters the foundation.

The American Red Cross and the National Weather Service identify these as common risk areas.

What to do before a winter storm

Drain and close outdoor water lines

  1. Remove outdoor hoses, drain them, and store them indoors.
  2. Close the indoor valve supplying each outdoor hose bib, if your plumbing has one.
  3. Open the exterior bib so water left in the line can drain, and leave the bib open.
  4. Drain pool and sprinkler supply lines according to the manufacturer’s or installer’s instructions. Do not add antifreeze unless those instructions direct you to; the Red Cross warns it can harm people, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.

Insulate exposed plumbing

Add insulation in attics, basements, and crawl spaces, and check garages and the spaces under kitchen and bathroom cabinets for supply lines. Insulate both hot- and cold-water pipes where they are exposed. The U.S. Department of Energy describes tubular sleeves made from flexible polyethylene or neoprene; choose a sleeve sized for the pipe and install it without gaps. Its guidance is available at Energy Saver: Insulation.

  • [High-Tech Self-regulating Heating Technology] Our water pipe heat tape features self-regulating technology, automatically adjusting heating power in response to ambient conditions, ensuring it never overheats or causes burns. This intelligent functionality optimizes energy usage, ensuring efficient and dependable pipe freeze protection.
  • [Efficient Integrated Thermostat] Our pipe heat trace features a built-in thermostat, activating at 38℉(3℃) and deactivating at 50℉(10℃). This intelligent system regulates power output, operating only when needed for optimal energy efficiency. Rest assured, your water pipes are protected from freezing while minimizing energy usage.

For an accessible exposed pipe, a sleeve provides passive insulation. Heat tape or heating cable is a powered alternative that must be selected for the particular pipe and installed exactly as its instructions specify. These are different approaches, not interchangeable products for every plumbing setup.

Locate the main water shutoff

Find the main shutoff and make sure household members know how to operate it. If a pipe breaks, stopping the water quickly can limit damage. The National Weather Service includes knowing how to shut off water among its winter preparedness guidance: NWS winter preparedness. Shutoff locations and plumbing arrangements vary by home.

  • For metal and plastic water pipes
  • Easy to install

What to do while temperatures are low

  • Keep the thermostat at a steady setting through the day and night rather than turning the heat down substantially overnight.
  • If you will be away during cold weather, the Red Cross recommends leaving the heat on at no lower than 55°F. This is the Red Cross’s recommendation, not a universal code requirement or a guarantee that pipes cannot freeze.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors so warmer room air can reach plumbing. Move cleaners and other chemicals out of children’s reach before opening the cabinets.
  • Keep garage doors closed when water pipes run through the garage.
  • In very cold conditions, let cold water drip from a faucet served by exposed pipes. The Red Cross says even a trickle can help keep water moving through the line.

Maintaining heat and running water can add to utility costs, but the Red Cross notes that they may help prevent costly freeze damage. Follow local safety guidance and your plumbing or heating equipment instructions.

Should you use heat tape or cable?

Heat tape and heating cable can help protect some exposed pipes, but they add electrical and fire-safety considerations that passive sleeves do not. Match the product to the pipe material and its diameter and length, and follow the manufacturer’s installation and inspection instructions. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that damaged or incorrectly installed heat tape can cause fires.

  • Easy to install
  • Do not overlap cable or cover it with insulation unless the specific product instructions explicitly allow it.
  • Do not assume a product is suitable for every pipe or installation; check its labeling and instructions before use.
  • Inspect it as directed, and do not use damaged equipment.

The CPSC’s older publications include an estimate of about 3,300 residential fires involving heat tapes or cables per year, published in 1990. That is a historical estimate, not a current annual rate. Its safety guidance is at CPSC heat-tape safety information.

What to do if a pipe may be frozen

Recognize the warning sign

If a faucet produces only a trickle, a pipe may be frozen. Check pipes against exterior walls and near the point where the water service enters the foundation, but remember that more than one line may be affected.

Thaw it gently and safely

  1. Keep the affected faucet open. As the ice melts, running water can help clear the line.
  2. Apply gentle heat to the suspected frozen section with an electric heating pad, a hair dryer, towels soaked in hot water, or a portable space heater positioned well away from flammable materials.
  3. Continue warming the pipe until normal water pressure returns, and check other faucets for signs of freezing.

Never use a blowtorch or another open flame, or a kerosene or propane heater or charcoal stove, to thaw plumbing. The Red Cross describes these methods and precautions in its frozen-pipe guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know when to call a plumber

Call a licensed plumber if you cannot locate the frozen section, the pipe is inaccessible, or gentle heating does not thaw it. A plumber is also appropriate if a pipe has split and needs repair.
