How to Keep OBS Running During Scheduled Power Cuts in India

A UPS can bridge a power cut only while it can support your OBS computer and network equipment. Learn how to size and test the setup, protect local recordings, and handle stream recovery.

To keep OBS running through a scheduled power cut, put the computer on a UPS sized for its actual streaming load and the outage time you need to bridge. If you are streaming live, back up the modem, router and any other essential network equipment as well. Test the whole setup before the stream: a UPS cannot help beyond its battery runtime, and it cannot prevent a separate internet outage.

Plan for the whole stream, not just the OBS computer

A live stream depends on power for the computer that runs OBS and for the network path between that computer and YouTube. Keeping the PC on battery will not preserve the stream if the router loses power or the ISP connection fails. Include the modem, router and any other necessary network equipment when working out the load to back up.

Start by checking the computer’s real power draw while OBS is doing the work you intend to do during the outage. Add the draw of the network equipment and any other devices that must remain powered. Then compare that combined load with the UPS’s supported output and its stated runtime at that load. Runtime depends on the connected equipment and the UPS; there is no single VA rating that can be recommended for every streaming PC or outage duration.

  • Load: Confirm the UPS can support the combined wattage of the computer and essential network equipment.
  • Runtime: Check the runtime specification at a load close to yours, for the length of outage you need to bridge.
  • Transfer behavior: Make sure the UPS’s output and transfer behavior work with the PC. India’s BharatSkills / Directorate General of Training training text describes an offline UPS supplying emergency power after sudden load shedding; the Electronics Sector Skills Council of India handbook also covers UPS and inverter field work. Test your actual computer rather than assuming compatibility based on the UPS type. BharatSkills / DGT training text · ESSCI UPS and inverter handbook
  • Battery condition: Check the battery’s condition and replacement requirements, especially if the UPS has been in service for some time.
  • Included equipment: Confirm that every device needed for the intended outcome can be connected to battery-backed outlets, not just surge-protected outlets.

The Government of India says Rule 10 of the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020 provides for 24×7 supply by distribution licensees, while allowing a Commission to specify lower hours for some categories. The Ministry of Power also notes that supply and distribution fall within the relevant State Government and distribution utility’s purview. This is not a guarantee against scheduled maintenance or a uniform outage timetable across India. Check the announced schedule from your own utility. Set up OBS for the failure you want to prevent

Connect the necessary equipment to battery-backed outlets

Connect the OBS computer and the modem/router, plus any other equipment the stream needs, to outlets that provide battery backup. Check the UPS documentation to distinguish those from outlets that provide surge protection only. Keep the total connected load within the UPS’s supported output.

Use OBS automatic reconnect for connection interruptions

OBS includes an automatic reconnect setting in its Advanced settings. It can help when a stream connection drops, but it does not keep OBS encoding while the computer is without power and does not guarantee that an event will recover after the PC has shut down. Follow the OBS Studio Overview Guide for the setting and understand it as a network-recovery aid, not a power backup.

If OBS shows dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, the issue may be the network connection between the computer and the ingest server, including a problem outside OBS. A UPS will not repair a failed ISP connection. Use the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide to investigate connection problems.

Record locally in MKV if you need an archive

If you are recording locally as well as streaming, set OBS’s recording format to MKV. OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire recording. If you need an MP4, use OBS’s Remux Recordings tool after the recording. MKV protects against one recording-file failure mode; it does not keep the PC powered or preserve unsaved work. See the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide for the recording-format guidance.

Test the complete setup before the scheduled cut

  1. Run OBS in the configuration you plan to use. Test with the intended stream or recording workload so the computer’s power draw is representative.
  2. Check the combined load. Include the computer, modem/router and any other equipment required for the stream. Compare the total with the UPS output and runtime specifications.
  3. Simulate a brief mains interruption safely. Follow the UPS manufacturer’s instructions. Confirm the computer stays on and OBS continues running when the UPS takes over.
  4. Check the network path. Confirm that the modem/router remain powered and that the internet connection survives the simulated interruption. A working UPS does not prove that the ISP connection will remain available during a real outage.
  5. Check the stream and local recording. YouTube recommends testing the setup, monitoring stream health and checking that the local archive file is growing. Consult YouTube’s streaming tips.
  6. Check recovery after any full shutdown. If power runs out and the PC shuts down, inspect OBS and the live event in YouTube Studio rather than assuming the same event resumed automatically. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains the event settings to check.

What to do when the stream still stops

Symptom Likely issue to check Practical next step
The computer turns off when mains power fails. The PC may not be on a battery-backed outlet, the load may exceed the UPS output, or the UPS may not be supplying the expected runtime. Check the outlet, combined load, UPS specifications and battery condition. Repeat the test with the actual OBS workload.
The computer stays on but the stream disconnects. The modem/router may have lost power, or the internet connection between OBS and YouTube may have failed. Confirm the network equipment is battery-backed and investigate the connection using OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.
OBS attempts to reconnect but does not restore the live event. Automatic reconnect helps with some stream disconnections; it does not restart a computer that has shut down or guarantee recovery of the event. Check that the PC and internet connection are back, then inspect OBS and YouTube Studio’s live event settings.
The local recording is damaged or missing after an abrupt stop. The recording may have been interrupted before it was safely finalized. For future recordings, use MKV and remux to MP4 afterward if needed. Check the recording in OBS before relying on it.
The UPS runs out before the outage ends. The combined load or target duration exceeds the UPS’s available runtime. Reassess the measured load and runtime requirement, then choose a setup that supports both. Do not infer runtime from a VA rating alone.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is uninterrupted playback of uploaded, prerecorded videos on a YouTube channel—not a live camera or interactive OBS production—StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps looping the uploaded video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
