OBS does not put your computer to sleep; Windows does. On Windows 11, set the plugged-in sleep timeout to Never (or longer than your broadcast), check hibernation and laptop lid/button actions, and let the screen turn off separately if you want. Those settings keep the computer awake, but they do not guarantee an uninterrupted stream or a complete YouTube archive.
Keep a Windows 11 computer awake while OBS streams
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Microsoft documents this Windows 11 path in its power settings guide.
- Under the plugged-in power options, set Make my device sleep after to Never, or choose a timeout comfortably longer than the planned broadcast. A long stream should run on reliable AC power; a battery-powered laptop may behave differently.
- Review any hibernate timeout controls shown on your device. Availability and labels can vary by hardware and configuration.
- Set Turn my screen off after separately. The display can turn off while the computer remains awake; screen-off is not system sleep.
- If you use a laptop, check what closing the lid and pressing the power button do. Depending on device settings, either action can put the computer to sleep or hibernate it. Microsoft explains the distinction between shutdown, sleep and hibernation in its Windows power-state guide.
- Check whether a manufacturer power-management utility or managed-device policy changes these behaviors. The Windows controls may not cover every vendor setting.
- Before leaving the stream unattended, test the setup for the expected duration and confirm OBS remains active after the screen turns off.
These exact menu instructions are for Windows 11. Windows versions, device makers and managed installations can expose different settings. The available sources do not establish current Mac or Linux paths, so do not assume these Windows steps apply to those systems.

What sleep settings do—and do not—control
OBS is software running on the host computer; changing an OBS stream option does not override the operating system’s sleep or hibernation behavior. YouTube’s encoder options for stream auto-start and auto-stop control stream lifecycle behavior, not the computer’s power state. See YouTube’s live stream settings.

Keeping the PC awake is only one part of reliability. OBS says, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard to select settings for your hardware, then test the actual workload. OBS’s system requirements guidance describes the compatibility caveat and wizard.

Test continuity and protect the recording separately
- Preview the YouTube feed and test the full setup before relying on it unattended. YouTube recommends testing, previewing, backup-encoder planning and checking archive files in its streaming tips.
- Do not confuse live continuity with archive preservation. YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all,” and recommends recording a local archive as a backup. This is an archive warning, not a statement that YouTube necessarily ends a live stream at 12 hours. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
- A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that stated 12-hour archive threshold. If preserving the broadcast matters, test a local recording workflow and verify the resulting files; do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only copy.
