For Tamil subtitles that every viewer can see in an OBS YouTube stream, the most reliable approach is to render the subtitles into a copy of the video, then play that copy in OBS as a Media Source. If your video has an embedded Tamil subtitle track, OBS’s VLC Video source may be able to display it. Uploading an SRT file in YouTube Studio instead creates viewer-selectable captions for a YouTube video; it does not guarantee that subtitles appear in the picture of an OBS live stream.
Choose the subtitle method that matches your goal

Method 1: render Tamil subtitles into the video
Use a video editor that can render your Tamil subtitle text onto the image, then export a new video. Add that exported file to OBS as a Media Source. Because the text is already in the video frames, viewers see it without enabling a caption track.

- Prepare the subtitle text and timing. Check that the Tamil text matches the spoken content and that each line appears for the correct interval.
- Render and export a subtitled copy. Preserve the video’s intended picture and audio, and use Tamil-capable text rendering in your editing workflow.
- Add the copy to OBS. In the Sources panel, select + > Media Source, create or choose a source, and use Browse to select the exported file.
- Check the composition. Review line breaks, contrast, text size, timing, and safe margins. Confirm that Tamil glyphs display correctly in the OBS preview.
- Make a short recording before going live. Watch it back to check subtitle timing and legibility in the actual output, not just the editor preview.
This method makes the subtitles permanent in that copy: viewers cannot switch them off, and changing the text or timing requires preparing a revised file.

Method 2: show an embedded subtitle track with VLC Video
If the video already contains a Tamil subtitle track, try OBS’s VLC Video source. OBS documents subtitle enablement and track selection for this source. Whether it works depends on the media file and installed components, so verify it before broadcasting.

- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source. The OBS guide says that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In the OBS Sources panel, select + > VLC Video, then configure the media path or playlist as appropriate.
- Enable subtitles and choose the track. In the source properties, turn on Subtitles Enabled and select the intended Tamil subtitle track under Subtitle Track.
- Verify the result. Check that the intended track is selected, Tamil characters render correctly, and the timing matches. Make a short OBS recording and review it before using the source in a live stream.
OBS’s documentation does not guarantee support for every container, subtitle codec, or Tamil glyph setup. If the track does not appear or the text renders incorrectly, use the rendered-video method instead.
Will an external SRT file appear over an OBS Media Source?
Do not assume that placing an .srt file beside a video will make OBS’s Media Source display it. OBS’s documented Media Source properties cover file selection and playback controls but do not document a selector for an external subtitle sidecar file. If you need visible text in the stream image, render the subtitles into the video or test whether an embedded track works through VLC Video.

Use YouTube Studio for selectable captions on a YouTube video
If you are publishing a normal YouTube video and want viewers to turn captions on or off, add Tamil subtitles in YouTube Studio. YouTube supports uploading a subtitle file, auto-syncing text, or entering subtitles manually. Its basic supported formats include SubRip .srt files using plain UTF-8. This is a separate caption workflow; an uploaded file is not proof that captions are composited into the video sent by OBS during a live stream.

YouTube lists Tamil among the languages supported for automatic captions on long-form videos. Its help page says live automatic captions are English-only. Machine-generated captions can contain errors because of pronunciation, accent, dialect, or background noise, so review generated captions before relying on them.

Can Tamil captions be sent as live captions to YouTube?
YouTube documents a separate live-caption path: captions must either be embedded in the video as 608/708 captions or sent through supported caption software over HTTP. Ordinary subtitle uploads in YouTube Studio are not the same workflow. Confirm that your chosen caption software and stream setup support the required method before depending on it for a live broadcast.
Troubleshoot subtitle problems before going live
- The SRT text is missing in OBS: The Media Source documentation does not describe loading an external sidecar file. Render the text into a video copy or try a compatible embedded track with VLC Video.
- VLC Video has no subtitle track or shows the wrong one: Check that the media file contains the intended track and select it under Subtitle Track. If the source still cannot read it, use a rendered copy.
- Tamil characters appear as boxes or are missing: The reviewed OBS documentation does not establish how Tamil font fallback behaves across operating systems. Test the actual media and OBS setup; if the glyphs fail, render the subtitles using a workflow that produces correct Tamil text in the exported picture.
- Subtitles are out of sync or difficult to read: Recheck timing and line breaks in the source or editor, then review a short OBS recording at the intended viewing size.
- YouTube captions do not appear in the live picture: Studio subtitle files create captions for a YouTube video; they do not establish an overlay in the OBS program. Use subtitles rendered into the frames, or verify a VLC track in OBS.
- VLC Video is unavailable or fails to load: Confirm VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS; the OBS guide specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
