To make playlist videos sound more consistent on a YouTube livestream or recording, compare and adjust their audio in OBS, or prepare the files to a consistent level before playback. Monitor the result and keep the output below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping. YouTube’s Stable volume is a separate, viewer-side feature; it may reduce loudness variation during playback, but it does not normalize the audio OBS sends to your stream.
What OBS can—and cannot—do with playlist volume
OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist. Its documented options include playback and playlist controls such as looping and shuffling, but do not promise automatic loudness normalization from one playlist item to the next. A playlist can therefore contain files that sound noticeably different even when they are played through the same source.

OBS level controls and audio filters can shape the source or scene output. They do not remove the need to listen to and compare the individual items. If you want closer matching, prepare the files consistently before loading them into OBS, or carefully adjust processing while monitoring the source.
Set up and check the playlist in OBS
- Install the matching VLC version. Add a VLC Video source in OBS. VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Load the playlist. Open the VLC Video source properties and add the files you want to play. Set the playback options you need, such as loop or shuffle. These settings control playback; they do not match the loudness of the files.
- Play through every item and watch the OBS audio mixer. Compare how loud each item sounds across the full item, not just at its start. Pay attention to peaks, perceived loudness, and dialogue-to-music balance where relevant.
- Listen to the monitored OBS signal. Check what OBS is actually sending, rather than relying only on the sound at the original file’s source. OBS’s audio guidance recommends listening both at the device and after the signal reaches OBS.
- Adjust conservatively. Change the playlist source level or use audio filters on the source or its containing scene as needed. Recheck the loudest items after each change. Raising the whole playlist to fix one quiet file can make louder files clip.
- Repeat the comparison after processing. Use the meter and your ears together; meter indications help assess level, but the reviewed OBS guidance does not prescribe a cross-file matching target.
Match files more closely before playback
If playlist items vary widely, an offline audio-preparation workflow gives you a chance to compare and adjust files individually before adding them to OBS. Use the same approach for the whole playlist, then listen through the resulting files in OBS. This is a practical way to improve consistency, not a guarantee that every file will sound equally loud: perceived loudness can differ even when peak levels are similar.

The official OBS guidance covered here does not specify a target loudness, a particular normalization utility, or a guaranteed per-file normalization feature in the VLC playlist source. Treat any processing choice as something to verify by listening to the actual OBS output.
Prevent clipping while adjusting levels
Digital full scale is 0 dBFS. OBS says the final audio output must stay below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion. That is a ceiling, not a recommended loudness target for matching files.

- Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
- Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
- Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
- Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device
- Do not raise a quiet item blindly until it appears as loud as the strongest item; first check the loudest passages in every file.
- If the output reaches or exceeds 0 dBFS, reduce the level or revise the processing, then monitor again.
- Check the entire playlist, including loud sections and transitions, before going live or making a recording for upload.
OBS audio and YouTube Stable volume are different controls
YouTube Help says Stable volume is on by default when watching videos. It balances quiet and loud portions by continuously adjusting playback volume to reduce variation. Where available, a viewer can toggle it in the YouTube player settings. It is not available for every video and is disabled for YouTube Music and official music videos.

Stable volume is applied during YouTube playback. It does not change the audio level OBS sends to a livestream or recording, and its availability and setting can vary for viewers. YouTube also describes creator controls for audio-enhancement defaults for future uploads in YouTube Studio on a computer. Those settings do not affect videos that have already been uploaded, and viewer settings can take precedence.

Troubleshoot uneven playlist audio
- One item is much quieter. Compare its full duration with the other files in OBS, then adjust that item in your offline preparation workflow or carefully tune the source processing. Do not assume a playlist-wide level control will normalize it automatically.
- Loud items distort after you raise the source. Lower the source or revise its processing, then check the loudest passages again. Keep the output below 0 dBFS.
- The meter looks acceptable but the playlist still sounds uneven. Peak level and perceived loudness are not the same comparison. Listen through each complete item and compare the OBS-monitored output.
- The source is missing from OBS. Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Viewers still hear variation on YouTube. YouTube Stable volume is a viewer-side playback enhancement, not a substitute for checking the signal sent by OBS. It may be unavailable for a particular video or turned off by a viewer.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your videos, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than a camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streaming, not for matching playlist loudness inside OBS.
