If your AWS Elemental MediaLive bill is higher than expected, compare the invoice’s dates and usage with your channel states and configuration for that same period. A YouTube stream that was not visibly live does not prove MediaLive had no billable resources: idle channels and some idle push inputs can incur charges, while configured outputs on a running channel can remain billable when paused. Check the AWS service line items before attributing the whole increase to MediaLive.
Start with the billed period and channel history
Identify the exact invoice dates, AWS Region, and MediaLive usage entries. Then compare them with channel state history and deployment changes over that interval. MediaLive channel states include Idle, Recovering, Running, Starting, and Stopping; state changes can also be emitted as CloudWatch events. See AWS’s channel and multiplex states documentation.

Do not use whether viewers could see a YouTube broadcast as a proxy for whether AWS resources were billable. A YouTube destination and an AWS channel are different parts of the workflow. The account’s state history and usage records are needed to identify what was active or configured during the invoice period.

Check idle channels and inputs
AWS describes charges for idle channels and for idle push inputs. An idle push input can be unattached or attached to a channel that is not running. Idle pull inputs are not charged under this idle-input rule, so distinguish push from pull rather than treating every unused input alike. Review each channel and input against the billed dates in AWS’s MediaLive pricing guidance.

- For each channel, establish when it was Running and when it was Idle.
- Find unattached push inputs and push inputs attached to non-running channels.
- Check whether an input was attached to a running channel even if it was not the active source or was not receiving content. AWS says attached inputs can be charged in that situation.
Count outputs on running channels, including paused ones
AWS charges for each output configured in a running channel; pausing an output does not stop that charge. As AWS puts it: “The charge applies even if the output has been paused by the user or by Elemental Live.” Review every configured output, not just the one currently sending content, and compare the count with the channel setup for the invoice period. The rule is described in AWS’s MediaLive pricing documentation.
Also inspect output type, codec, and frame rate. If A/B forensic video watermarking is enabled in a supported output group, AWS bills each A/B variant as a separate output. Include those variants in your count.

Verify input specifications against the actual source
MediaLive input specifications use codec, resolution, and maximum bitrate fields for billing and resource allocation. The selected tier matters even when the incoming video is lower resolution: AWS gives the example that an HD selection is charged as HD even if the actual inputs are SD. Its guidance is direct: “You pay for the option that you specify.” See Input specifications settings.
Recommended Free Tools
Compare the configured values with the most resource-intensive characteristics of the real source. Correct an unnecessarily high specification if the source and workflow support a lower one, but do not underspecify merely to reduce a charge: the setting also allocates resources and may affect output quality or operation.

Review add-ons, channel class, and reservations
Add-ons and channel class
Inspect enabled channel features and the channel class. AWS documents add-on charges on running channels, and Standard two-pipeline and Single-pipeline channel classes have different rates. Link inputs use a separate pricing model. The amount depends on Region and configuration, so check current regional rates rather than applying a general estimate.
Reservation matching
If you have input or output reservations, verify that each reservation’s Region and input/output attributes match the channel configuration. AWS applies reservation minutes only to matching items, replenishes the pool monthly, and does not carry unused minutes forward. Review how reservations work and working with MediaLive reservations.

Separate MediaLive from the rest of the AWS workflow
Inspect the complete AWS bill’s service and usage breakdown before deciding that MediaLive caused the full increase. A streaming deployment may also have separate charges for services such as MediaPackage or CloudFront. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide illustrates these as distinct billing categories; it is an example, not a personalized estimate.

Use a like-for-like comparison to find the change
Compare the billed period with a prior period when the bill was expected. Keep the dimensions separate so the cause is visible:
- Channel runtime and state history.
- Number and type of attached inputs, including push versus pull and idle status.
- Configured input codec, resolution, and maximum bitrate.
- Number and type of outputs, including paused outputs and any separately billed A/B variants.
- Output codec and frame rate, enabled add-ons, and channel class.
- Region and whether any reservation matches the configured resource.
- Separate service line items for MediaLive and other workflow services.
The actual cause and any corrected monthly total are account-specific. Establish them from the invoice’s service and usage details, billing dates, Region, channel/input/output configuration, enabled features, and state history.
