Download your route maps and music to your phone before you leave reliable internet, then confirm both are available offline. Offline maps can guide you without a connection, but they cannot provide live traffic or reliably account for new closures and detours. Plan coverage for the whole route—including likely diversions—and keep your phone charged.
What to prepare before mobile coverage drops
- Save enough map area. Download a region that covers the complete drive, plus nearby areas where you might stop or detour. A map that ends partway through the route may not provide offline directions for the whole trip.
- Download music to the phone. Streaming needs an internet connection. Choose songs, albums, or playlists in advance and check that they appear in the app’s downloaded music section.
- Check storage and map status. Downloads use device storage. Confirm you have enough space, and update offline maps before leaving.
- Keep the phone powered. Navigation and music playback use the phone during the drive; connect it to power if needed and secure it in a mount if you use one.
Choose and prepare an offline map
| Option | Offline driving | Important limits | Before you go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Maps | Driving directions work when the entire route is inside the downloaded map area. | Offline driving does not provide traffic information or alternate routes. Google says offline maps expire and should be updated. | Check the route fits within the saved area, add surrounding areas for likely detours, and refresh the map while online. |
| Apple Maps on iPhone | Downloaded areas can support driving directions and estimated arrival times without Wi-Fi or cellular access where the feature is available. | Availability and features vary by region. Downloads use device storage. | Check regional availability, select an area covering the route, and review the download size shown by Maps. |
Google Maps
While connected, open Google Maps and download the area containing your drive. You can search for an area or use the Offline maps section; menu labels and paths can vary by app version and device. Verify that the saved region covers the entire route, not just the starting point or destination. Google’s offline maps guidance says offline driving works only when the complete route is within the downloaded map.

Google Maps says it attempts to update an offline map automatically when it has 15 days or less before expiry and the device is connected to Wi-Fi. Do not rely on that happening during a trip: check the map’s status and update it before departure. Without service, Google Maps offline driving does not show traffic information or alternate routes, so it may not reflect a new closure or find a live detour.

Save the music over Wi-Fi or another reliable connection before departure, then verify that the tracks are listed as downloaded in the app. A playlist visible in your library is not necessarily stored on the phone.

For Apple Music, add the songs, album, or playlist to your library, then download it. Apple’s iPhone music download instructions explain the process. Apple also distinguishes subscription-catalog downloads from music purchased through the iTunes Store or transferred from a computer; purchased or personally synced music may be another offline option if you have it on your device.

Run this final check while you still have internet
- Open the offline-map list in your navigation app and confirm the route area is present and current.
- Check that the saved area includes likely stops and detours, not just the planned road.
- Make sure the phone has enough free storage for the map and music you intend to keep.
- Open your music app’s downloads section and confirm your chosen tracks are stored locally.
- Connect the phone to power for the drive if needed. A car charger or phone mount is optional; neither makes an app’s downloads work offline.
- Check current road conditions before setting off. An offline map is a backup for loss of connectivity, not a live source for traffic or closures.
