If you find a mobile line registered in your name that you did not authorize, save evidence, dispute it with the mobile operator, and use your country’s official telecom-regulator channels if the operator does not resolve the issue. Check whether other lines are attached to your identity, secure accounts that rely on the affected number, and contact investigative authorities if you suspect identity-document misuse, threats, or financial fraud. Procedures and legal consequences vary by country.
What to do first if you discover an unauthorized line
- Save what you found. Capture the official lookup result or carrier notice, the date, the number and the operator. Keep relevant messages and account notices. Store the evidence securely; do not post identity documents, full account details, or unredacted screenshots publicly.
- Contact the mobile operator. Use a contact channel listed on the operator’s official website or app. Explain that you did not apply for or authorize the line and ask it to record a fraud or registration dispute, investigate how the line was registered, and explain whether it can suspend or deactivate the line while the case is reviewed. Ask for a complaint or case reference and keep it. The UAE Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) advises people in this situation to contact their provider immediately and file an official complaint: TDRA FAQ.
- Check for other lines. Look for an official subscriber-connection lookup provided for your country, rather than relying on an unofficial website or message. The Government of India’s Department of Telecommunications describes TAFCOP as a service for checking connections issued in a person’s name on its eServices portal. Egypt’s NTRA recommends checking through My NTRA. India’s Department of Telecommunications also advised citizens in a September 22, 2026 release to use Sanchar Saathi to check and block connections that are unnecessary or not genuinely theirs; see the Press Information Bureau release.
- Secure accounts tied to the number. Review password-reset and financial accounts that use the affected number for recovery or verification. Update recovery details where appropriate, change passwords if you see suspicious activity, and protect copies of identity documents. An unauthorized registration does not by itself establish that anyone accessed another account. The Philippines’ National Privacy Commission warns of possible personal-data misuse in connection with SIM registration and recommends protecting personal data: NPC advisory.
How to dispute the line with the operator
The operator is the party whose subscriber records need to be examined, so start with its official customer-service or complaints channel. Be direct: say the line is not yours and you did not consent to its registration. Request a formal dispute record, an investigation into the registration, and instructions on whether the line can be restricted during review. Ask what documents or information it needs and how it will communicate the result.

Keep a simple log of dates, channels used, names or agent identifiers if provided, case numbers, and responses. Share identity information only through verified operator channels. Do not assume that every country requires a police report, that an operator must deactivate a line immediately, or that a particular review deadline applies; ask the operator what rules and timelines govern your case.

If the operator does not accept or adequately address the dispute, contact the national telecom regulator through channels published on its official site. Include the operator’s complaint reference, the date you first reported the issue, a concise account of what happened, and relevant evidence. Check local rules: some regulators may expect you to approach the operator first, while available channels and response timelines differ by country.

For example, Egypt’s NTRA says a citizen may complain to it about an unknown line so it can examine the registration procedures and the operator’s compliance. Its statement lists the call center at 155, My NTRA, email, official social media, and WhatsApp as complaint channels; verify the current contact details on the NTRA statement before using them. In the UAE, TDRA tells people to contact their provider immediately and file an official complaint, as described in its FAQ.
Does a line in your name automatically make you responsible?
Not necessarily. A database entry is not, on its own, proof that you possessed or controlled a SIM, but do not assume it automatically removes legal risk either. Preserve records, respond to formal inquiries, and ask a qualified local adviser or the relevant authority about the law in your jurisdiction.

Egypt’s NTRA said on August 7, 2026, that legal responsibility is personal and depends on the facts, evidence, and investigation; it stated, “Legal responsibility is personal and cannot be attributed to anyone other than the actual perpetrator.” That is an Egypt-specific statement, not a rule that can be applied worldwide. The same NTRA statement says that a person who finds a line registered in their name that is not theirs may complain to the regulator, which can examine registration procedures and the operator’s compliance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen to contact police or another investigative authority
Contact police or another competent investigative authority if you have reason to suspect that someone used your identity documents, threatened you, committed financial fraud, or engaged in other criminal conduct. Preserve evidence and provide the operator or regulator’s case references where relevant. Egypt’s NTRA statement explicitly says citizens may notify competent investigative authorities; whether and how to make a report depends on local law and the facts.

Why official checks and prompt action matter
Unauthorized registration is a real possibility, but available evidence here does not establish how common it is. In a September 22, 2026 case release, India’s Department of Telecommunications reported that a point-of-sale agent in Chhattisgarh illegally activated 25 mobile connections using citizens’ identity documents without their knowledge or consent, and that lines failing re-verification were deactivated. That is a specific case count, not a measure of prevalence: Press Information Bureau.
Country rules can differ even on registration and deactivation. For instance, the Philippines’ 2022 implementing rules for its SIM Registration Act require reporting mechanisms and allow deactivation of SIMs used for fraudulent texts or calls after due investigation. Those provisions describe the Philippine framework, not a universal procedure: Rules and Regulations Implementing Republic Act No. 11934.
