WidgetKit animations happen when the widget’s displayed content changes; they are not continuously running loops. For battery-conscious widgets, the bigger practical lever is requesting updates only as often as the information needs them.
Understand what a widget animation does
WidgetKit renders a widget’s SwiftUI view in a separate process, and widgets are not continually active even when they remain visible. An animation is a transition between rendered states after content changes, rather than motion that runs constantly in the background.

That distinction matters: animation design and timeline refresh frequency are separate choices. A restrained transition can make an update easier to notice, but repeatedly requesting new timelines to make a widget feel live is not a substitute for an always-running animation.
Keep transitions brief and focused
Apple documents a maximum animation duration of two seconds for widgets and Live Activities. Use that as an upper limit, not a target: animate the value or state that changed, and avoid making every part of a widget move when one update affects many views. Apple recommends disabling transitions or animations on some views in that situation so the important change remains clear. See Apple’s guidance on animating widget and Live Activity updates.

There is no published per-animation battery measurement in the reviewed Apple guidance, so it does not establish that one particular SwiftUI transition saves a specific amount of power or is more efficient than another. The practical, documented battery advice concerns limiting update frequency and resource use.
Match timeline updates to the data
Use timelines for changes you can predict, and include future entries when their relevant content is known. Choose a reload policy based on when the displayed information could next change. The policy sets the earliest time WidgetKit should ask for another timeline; it does not guarantee that the system will render an update at that exact time.

Apple says a frequently viewed widget typically receives 40 to 70 refreshes in a day, which corresponds roughly to intervals of 15 to 60 minutes. These are typical platform figures, not a promised schedule. Widget visibility, the time since the last reload, activity in the containing app, and learned user behavior can affect the dynamic budget. Apple also says timeline entries should generally be at least about five minutes apart. These figures are platform guidance, not independent battery measurements. Reload only when displayed information changes
For app-triggered updates, call WidgetCenter reload methods when data shown by the widget has changed, rather than on a timer that runs regardless of whether the content is different. Where possible, prepare shared data in advance so the widget can render an update without doing unnecessary work at reload time. Apple’s WidgetKit update guidance explains how timelines and reload requests work together.
- List what the widget displays. Identify which values or states can change and how often they can realistically change.
- Put predictable changes in the timeline. Provide future entries for known changes instead of asking the system to reload repeatedly in anticipation.
- Set the earliest justified reload. Use a policy that reflects when the shown data may next need updating; treat it as a request, not an exact rendering appointment.
- Request a reload after a real data change. Use
WidgetCenteronly when the widget’s displayed information has changed. - Animate the meaningful difference. Keep the transition brief and suppress motion on secondary views if too much changes at once.
What happens on Always-On displays?
On devices with an Always-On display, WidgetKit does not perform these animations while the display is in Always-On mode, to preserve battery. Developers can check the reduced-luminance environment value and adapt the widget accordingly. Animation therefore should not be relied on to communicate information that must remain apparent in that mode.
