URL decisions become harder to change as a site grows. A path that is clear for one page can become an inconsistent pattern across hundreds of pages; filters and tracking parameters can multiply those pages into many URL variants. A scalable URL plan keeps important content easy to reach, limits low-value crawl paths, and gives search engines consistent signals about which version to use. URL wording alone does not guarantee rankings.
Why URL architecture matters as a site grows
A URL is both an address for a page and a clue about the site’s organization. Consistent, descriptive paths help visitors and search engines understand what a page contains. Google’s URL structure guidance recommends using words that describe the content, choosing language familiar to the audience, separating words with hyphens, and avoiding unnecessary parameters where possible.

The bigger risk is often not a single awkward URL but the number of variants a site can generate. Sorting, filters, session values, and alternate parameter orders may produce several addresses for pages that are identical or nearly identical. Google’s guidance notes that complex URL structures can create excessive sets of similar pages, wasting crawl activity or making it harder to index the useful URLs.
There is no universal rule that a page path must use folders rather than query parameters. Choose a pattern that represents the content clearly and can be generated and maintained consistently.

How to design a URL pattern for each page type
Start with the site’s content types and the language its audience uses. A URL should make the page’s subject reasonably clear without encoding every detail of its navigation or implementation.
- Use descriptive words: Prefer meaningful terms over opaque identifiers when practical.
- Separate words with hyphens: This matches Google’s recommendation for readable word boundaries.
- Choose a consistent convention: If the server treats uppercase and lowercase versions as equivalent, settle on one case and redirect or otherwise consolidate alternatives.
- Keep only meaningful parameters: A parameter is not automatically a problem; assess whether it changes page content and whether that resulting page has a distinct purpose.
Review the design against the actual content model. A product category, article, or location page may need a stable, human-readable path. A temporary sort order may not deserve a separately discoverable URL. Whatever the form, avoid creating multiple addresses for the same page without a clear reason and a consolidation plan.
Do URL parameters and filters hurt SEO?
Parameters and filters do not inherently hurt SEO. The concern is what they cause: if many combinations produce pages with little distinct value, they can create an effectively unbounded set of URLs. Google’s faceted navigation guidance explains that this can lead to overcrawling and slower discovery of new useful URLs.
For each parameter or filter class, decide whether its resulting pages should be crawled and whether they merit appearing in search. These are related but separate decisions: a useful visitor feature does not automatically need a search-indexable landing page.

How to handle faceted navigation
When filtered pages should not be crawled
If filter combinations do not need to appear in Google Search or other Google products, control the crawl space deliberately. Google describes methods including robots.txt rules. Its guidance says canonical and nofollow signals are generally less effective over the long term for preventing crawling of facet URLs than the preferred methods it documents. Choose controls that match the site’s URL patterns and verify that they do not block pages you want crawled.
When filtered pages should be crawlable
If some filtered pages are useful search destinations, keep their URLs stable and their behavior accurate. Google recommends consistent ordering when filters are represented in paths, avoiding duplicate filters, and using conventional & separators for query parameters. Impossible or empty filter combinations and nonexistent pagination URLs should return an actual 404 response rather than a successful page with no meaningful results.

Do not make every possible filter combination crawlable by default. Identify the specific combinations with distinct value, then make sure those URLs can be reached through ordinary links and are not duplicated by alternate ordering or formatting.

When two or more URLs show the same or very similar content, choose a preferred URL and align the site’s signals around it. Google’s canonicalization documentation describes redirects and rel="canonical" annotations as strong signals, while sitemap inclusion is weaker. Google may select a canonical itself, so a site’s declaration is a signal, not an absolute guarantee.
Best Value
- Redirect alternate URLs when they should no longer be used.
- On the preferred page, use a self-referential canonical where appropriate.
- Link internally to the preferred URL rather than its duplicate.
- Keep canonical annotations, redirects, sitemap entries, and internal links consistent.
- Do not use robots.txt as a canonicalization method.
Canonicalization helps consolidate signals for similar pages; it is not a substitute for deciding whether a low-value URL space should be crawled in the first place.

A clean URL pattern cannot help a page that the site does not expose through crawlable links. Google’s ecommerce site structure guidance emphasizes navigation and links between pages. Googlebot generally does not submit queries into a site’s search box, so internal search should not be the only route to important content.
Link important pages from relevant navigation, category pages, or other suitable pages. This gives users a usable route and helps crawlers discover the content without relying on searches that they may not perform.
Use sitemaps to reinforce, not contradict, URL choices
Include absolute URLs in XML sitemaps, following Google’s sitemap guidance. List the preferred URLs rather than every duplicate or parameter variant. Sitemap inclusion can reinforce a canonical preference, but it is a weaker signal than redirects and canonical annotations. Sitemap entries should agree with internal links and canonical tags.
A practical review checklist for a growing site
- Inventory page types: List the URL patterns used for content, categories, pagination, filters, sorting, and other functions.
- Find variants: Check for alternate case, parameter order, repeated filters, tracking values, and other URLs that render the same or similar content.
- Classify the variants: For each pattern, decide whether it changes content, whether that page is valuable in search, and whether it should be crawlable.
- Choose one preferred address: Use redirects or canonical annotations for duplicates and make internal links point to the chosen URL.
- Check edge cases: Confirm that impossible filters, empty combinations, and nonexistent pagination return the appropriate 404 response.
- Trace discovery paths: Ensure important pages can be reached through ordinary links rather than only through a search box.
- Reconcile the sitemap: Include absolute preferred URLs and check that sitemap entries agree with canonical signals and links.
Use the same review whenever a new page type, filter, or parameter is introduced. The goal is not to eliminate every parameter or force every site into one URL style; it is to keep valuable pages discoverable while preventing redundant variants from becoming the site’s dominant crawl paths.
