Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If your smart fridge stops cooling, keep its doors closed, check the actual temperatures with appliance thermometers, and track how long perishable food has been above 40°F (4°C). Don’t rely on an app alert or display estimate to decide whether food is safe. Use FoodSafety.gov’s item-by-item power-outage chart to decide what to keep or discard; the familiar four-hour refrigerator window applies to an unopened refrigerator during a power outage, not automatically to every mechanical failure.
What to do first
- Keep both doors closed. Each opening lets cold air escape. Limit access while you assess the problem.
- Measure, don’t guess. Check the refrigerator and freezer with appliance thermometers. FoodSafety.gov recommends keeping the refrigerator at or below 40°F (4°C) and the freezer at 0°F (-18°C). A smart display, app notification, or estimated reading is not a substitute for measuring food-storage temperatures.
- Write down the timeline. Record when you noticed cooling had stopped, the measured temperatures, when the refrigerator first went above 40°F if known, and whether the doors were opened. If you do not know how long food has been too warm, do not treat an estimate as proof that it is safe.
- Plan temporary cold storage. If cooling will be unavailable for an extended period, move food to an insulated cooler with ice or frozen gel packs and keep it at or below 40°F. FoodSafety.gov recommends having coolers available if a power outage may exceed four hours.
- Decide food by food. Consult FoodSafety.gov’s “Food Safety During Power Outage” chart for the specific item and its exposure. Never taste food to check its safety; smell, appearance, and texture alone cannot establish that it is safe.
How to judge refrigerated food
Use the two-hour rule carefully
FoodSafety.gov’s emergency guidance says to discard perishable food that has been above 40°F (4°C) for two hours or more. If the surrounding temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is one hour. These are discard thresholds, not a promise that food with an unknown temperature history is safe.

Understand the four-hour outage estimate
FoodSafety.gov says an unopened refrigerator keeps food safe for up to four hours during a power outage. After four hours without power, discard refrigerated perishables such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers, following the official chart for item-specific decisions. This estimate is specifically for a power outage and a closed refrigerator. A mechanical cooling failure can have a different start time or temperature pattern, so use measured temperatures and the known exposure period where possible rather than assuming the four-hour window applies.
Follow the chart for the actual food
The outage chart distinguishes among foods. It calls for discarding many meats, seafood, eggs, leftovers, soft cheeses, milk, and cooked vegetables under its stated exposure conditions. Some foods, including hard cheeses, butter, uncut fresh produce, and certain shelf-stable condiments, may be kept under the chart’s rules. Check the actual food and its category instead of treating everything in the refrigerator alike.

What to do with freezer food
A closed freezer can hold a safe temperature for approximately 48 hours when full, or 24 hours when half full, according to FoodSafety.gov’s power-outage guidance. These estimates assume the door stays closed. For individual items, the chart says food that still has ice crystals and feels as cold as refrigerated, or measures 40°F (4°C) or below, can generally be refrozen or cooked. There are exceptions: the chart says to discard ice cream and frozen yogurt. Check the chart rather than applying the general rule to every frozen product.
Choose between the appliance and a cooler
Keeping food in the closed refrigerator may make sense while it remains at or below 40°F and cooling is expected to return soon. A cooler with ice or frozen gel packs is a temporary alternative if the outage will last longer or you need to move food. In either case, base the decision on measured temperature, expected time without cooling, and any time the food has already spent above the safe threshold. Moving food to a cooler does not make food safe again if it has already exceeded the applicable time-temperature limit.

- Continuous Updates: We have fixed the problem of frequent low temperature alarms. There will be no false alarm when low temperatures (<-4°F) are detected during normal operation of the freezers compressor. The software usage experience will be continuously optimized.
- 24/7 Instant Alarms: Set preset temperature ranges, and the WiFi freezer thermometer will alert you via app when the temperature rises or drops outside of the range. The freezer temperature alarm ensures a stable connection to maintain food and equipment safety. (2.4Ghz WiFi Only)
- Monitor Temperature Anywhere: Keep track of temperature data in real-time from anywhere with the GoveeLife's APP without subscription fee. The WiFi gateway supports pairing up to 10 sensors. And you need to connect to the gateway for APP remote alarm. If you need more freezer alarm sensors, please search ASIN:B0CLB3BTSG.
- Upgrade Accuracy Probe: The freezer temperature monitor's wide measuring range of -40° to 158°F with ±0.9°F / 0.5°C accuracy and 2s fast refresh to ensure the data is reliable. The probes and cables are slim and sturdy, allowing flexibility to fit in the refrigerator or freezer. Our fridge thermometers bring convenience to your life!
- Smart Anti-False Alarm: The anti-false alarm allows the freezer alarm to notify you after 1-10 mins of temperature overrun. Prevent falsely triggering the alarm when opening the refrigerator to take food. And it notifies to remind you to change the battery when it's low.
Get the cooling fault diagnosed separately
Food-safety steps do not identify why the appliance stopped cooling. Smart-fridge controls and repair procedures vary by make and model; consult the exact owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s support service for diagnosis. Do not assume a reset, app setting, alert, or component check applies to every refrigerator.
