On a Chromebook, keeping settings and files is a two-part job: sign in with the same Google Account and sync the settings you want to carry across devices, then store important files in Google Drive or on a separate external drive. Downloads stay in local storage and are not included in account sync. Guest sessions and factory resets can erase local data, so back up files separately before a reset.
The steps below are specific to ChromeOS. Other browser-based operating systems may handle accounts, files, and resets differently.

What “persistent” means on a Chromebook
A setting or file may persist through a browser restart but not through a sign-out, session end, factory reset, or move to another device. Treat these as different outcomes:
Recommended Free Tools
- Across devices: selected account settings and browser data can sync when you sign in with the same Google Account. This is not a backup of every file.
- After a reset or device loss: a copy in Drive or on separate external storage is safer than a file stored only on the Chromebook.
- Without internet: cloud files work offline only if supported files or folders have been made available offline and downloaded to the device.
- After a guest session: local data may be erased when the session ends, depending on the type of session and administrator policy.
For a personal Chromebook, use account sync for selected settings and a separate storage location for important files.

Sync your account settings
Google lists items such as history, bookmarks, passwords, and Wi-Fi networks among the data that can sync. Downloads are excluded. On a work or school Chromebook, an administrator may disable or control sync.
- Sign in to the Chromebook with the Google Account whose settings you want to use on other devices.
- Open Settings and go to Accounts > Sync and Google services. Check that sync is enabled and review the categories available for your account.
- If a control is unavailable on a managed device, ask the administrator whether the organization allows that setting.
Google’s Sync your account settings guidance describes the data that can sync and notes that downloads are not included.
Keep downloaded files from being deleted
Chromebook downloads normally go to the local Downloads folder. A downloaded file does not become a Drive file just because browser settings are syncing, and Google warns that downloaded files may be removed when device storage runs low.

Save new downloads somewhere durable
In Chrome, open Settings > Downloads. Change the download location to a Drive folder if that option is available, or enable the setting that asks where to save each file and choose a durable location. Labels and available choices can vary by ChromeOS version and account setup.
Move files already in Downloads
Open the Files app, select the items you need to keep, and move or copy them from Downloads to Google Drive or compatible external storage. Google’s guide to opening, saving, or deleting files on a Chromebook explains the available locations.
Google also recommends moving important downloads out of Downloads to avoid loss when space is low. See Keep your downloaded files from being deleted. If you use an external USB flash drive or hard drive, check that it is compatible with your Chromebook.

Make Drive files available offline
Files kept in Drive are stored in the cloud, but they are not all automatically available without a connection. While online, mark the supported files or folders you need as available offline, then wait for their contents to download. Look for the offline indicator before relying on them during travel or an outage.

Changes made offline sync to Drive after the Chromebook reconnects. Some file types and apps do not work offline, and low device storage can prevent offline availability. Automatic My Drive syncing is a Chromebook Plus feature and requires enough free local storage. Follow Google’s current instructions for using Google Drive files offline for the controls available on your device.
Back up before a factory reset, repair, or replacement
A factory reset, also called Powerwash, erases local user data, including files in Downloads, local settings, and apps. It does not erase files stored in Drive or on external storage. Syncing account settings does not protect local files from this erasure.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Guest sessions and managed Chromebooks
Do not use a guest session as a place to keep user files. Chrome guest browser data is not saved to local disk. In a managed guest session, local user data is wiped when the session ends. Organizations can also set policies governing local storage and session behavior, so a managed Chromebook may not behave like a personal signed-in profile.
ChromeOS public sessions are designed as ephemeral sessions, while Chromium documents kiosk app sessions as persistent by default. These are specialized managed modes, and administrators can configure behavior. If persistence matters on a work, school, public-session, or kiosk device, check the organization’s policy rather than assuming that local files will remain.

Choose a storage method for the job
| Method | Best use | Works offline? | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | Cross-device access and a copy independent of the Chromebook’s local disk | Yes, for supported files or folders marked available offline | Offline copies use local storage; cloud access depends on your account, available storage, and network for files not downloaded. |
| Chromebook Downloads | Temporary local files | Yes, while the file remains on the device | Not included in account sync; local data can be erased by a reset and downloaded files may be removed when storage is low. |
| USB flash drive or external hard drive | A separate copy, transfer, or offline access | Yes, while the drive is connected | Copying is manual; the drive can be lost or damaged, and compatibility depends on the Chromebook. |
Google describes Drive and compatible USB storage as Chromebook file-storage options in its Chromebook overview. A USB drive is a second copy only after you copy the files to it; it does not automatically sync with the Chromebook.
Check available storage if files keep disappearing or going offline
Low local space can affect downloads and offline copies. Review Google’s guidance on freeing up space on a Chromebook, then remove only files you no longer need or move them to Drive or external storage. Keep enough free device space for the offline files you expect to use.
