How Much Does It Cost to Run a Voice-to-Database Assistant?

A voice-to-database assistant has no universal monthly price. Estimate speech input, model inference, generated speech, database and compute, hosting, and operational costs against a defined workload.

There is no single monthly price for a voice-to-database assistant. The bill depends on how much audio it handles, how it converts speech into answers, the database and hosting setup, and what you retain or need to operate reliably. A useful estimate separates those cost lines instead of treating speech recognition as the full cost of voice.

What goes into the monthly cost?

A voice-to-database assistant typically listens to a spoken request, interprets it, queries a database, and returns a spoken or text response. Its monthly cost can include:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Speech input: transcribing or otherwise processing the user’s audio.
  • Language-model inference: interpreting the request, deciding what to query, and forming an answer. Depending on the design, this may also involve backend model or tool use.
  • Speech output: converting the answer into generated audio when the assistant speaks.
  • Database: a plan or subscription, compute, storage, and usage such as egress.
  • Application operations: hosting, logs, backups, monitoring, retained audio, and availability requirements where applicable.

A practical estimate is: monthly total = speech input + model inference + speech output + database plan and compute + application hosting + storage, egress, logging, backups, and operational requirements. The exact components depend on the architecture; some may be included in a service rate while others are billed separately.

What do the published component prices show?

The following USD figures are examples from official provider pricing pages accessed on October 4, 2026. They are component prices, not quotes for a complete assistant, and provider rates and terms can change.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Charcoal
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Cost component Published example What to account for
Speech transcription OpenAI lists Whisper transcription at $0.006 per minute on its pricing page. This is an input-transcription example, not the total cost of a spoken interaction.
Realtime audio OpenAI’s 2025 update lists GPT-Realtime-Whisper at $0.017 per minute. Its Realtime API announcement describes realtime voice as an alternative to chaining recognition, a text model, and text-to-speech. Check current rates and product availability. A separate example on OpenAI’s GPT-Live 1 model page lists voice-session charges of $0.05 per minute, with backend model and tool use billed separately: model pricing.
Speech-to-text Google Cloud lists standard Speech-to-Text at $0.024 per minute above the first 60 monthly minutes per account: Google Cloud pricing. Requests round up to 15-second increments; channels are billed separately. Model, batch method, and eligibility for reduced consumption-model rates can also affect the rate.
Database plan and compute Supabase lists its Pro plan at $25 per month and Micro compute at $10 per month: Supabase pricing. The plan and compute are distinct parts of the pricing display, and paid-plan compute credits affect the total. Supabase says each project has a dedicated Postgres instance, with compute charged independently of database usage. Compute is billed hourly, and any partial hour is charged as a full hour: billing documentation and compute documentation.

Supabase also lists storage, egress, and other usage quotas. A prototype that remains within a free allowance and a production service requiring steady compute, backups, monitoring, availability, or higher quotas can therefore have very different bills. Supabase is one vendor example, not necessarily the best or cheapest fit for every workload.

How to estimate your own workload

Before comparing providers, write down the assumptions that drive usage. A monthly audio-minute total alone is not enough if one assistant handles short questions and another handles long conversations or generates lengthy spoken answers.

Rank #2
Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Deep Sea Blue
  • Monthly audio minutes submitted for recognition or realtime processing.
  • Average turns per conversation and expected number of conversations.
  • Typical request and response length, including generated speech.
  • Expected concurrent sessions and availability target.
  • Database size, compute needs, storage, and expected egress.
  • How long you retain audio, transcripts, application logs, and backups.
  • Whether the design uses separate speech, model, and speech-generation services or an integrated realtime service.

For a modular setup, estimate input speech by the provider’s billing unit and rounding rules, estimate model use from input and output token volumes, and price generated speech separately. Then add the database and deployment bill. The official pricing examples above do not establish a representative end-to-end monthly cost for a specified assistant workload, and they do not establish a standalone text-to-speech-only price. Add the selected TTS service’s current price to any estimate that needs generated audio.

How should you compare modular and realtime voice designs?

A modular design commonly chains speech recognition, a language model, and text-to-speech. OpenAI described that pattern in its October 1, 2024 announcement: “Previously, to create a similar voice assistant experience, developers had to transcribe audio with an automatic speech recognition model like Whisper, pass the text to a text model for inference or reasoning, and then play the model’s output using a text-to-speech model.” OpenAI’s announcement describes the architecture; it does not mean every current assistant must use it.

Rank #3
Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Glacier White

Compare alternatives using the same monthly audio duration and conversation pattern, and hold database and deployment assumptions constant. Separate components make individual billing units visible, but can create multiple charges. An integrated voice service may simplify the stack; confirm whether its rate includes listening, speaking, backend model use, and tool calls. OpenAI’s cited GPT-Live 1 example, for instance, states that backend model and tool use are billed separately.

Which costs are easiest to miss?

  • Billing increments and allowances: Google Cloud’s standard Speech-to-Text example rounds requests up to 15-second increments and applies only above the first 60 monthly minutes per account. Check the applicable recognition model, batch method, channel count, and rate eligibility.
  • Speech output: a transcription rate covers listening, not necessarily the assistant’s generated spoken response. Price the chosen TTS service independently unless the selected service explicitly includes it.
  • Database compute: database usage alone may not capture the plan and compute baseline. Check how credits, hourly billing, and partial hours are treated.
  • Storage and operations: retained audio, logs, backups, monitoring, egress, and higher quotas can add cost or change the required plan.
  • Production expectations: steady compute, recovery, availability, and concurrency requirements may call for a different setup from a low-traffic prototype.
