FFmpeg cannot send live video while your internet connection has no route to YouTube. To recover when connectivity returns, configure recovery for the network output—FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer is one documented option—or run FFmpeg under a supervisor that restarts a failed process. HTTP -reconnect flags are for HTTP input behavior; they do not, by themselves, reconnect an RTMP or RTMPS output. After recovery, verify that YouTube is receiving video rather than relying on FFmpeg still being open.
What “reconnect” means in this setup
A YouTube broadcast has two relevant sides: FFmpeg reads and encodes its input, then sends packets to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. A network interruption can affect either side, but recovering an input is not the same as recovering the output connection.

- FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes HTTP options including
reconnect,reconnect_at_eof,reconnect_on_network_error,reconnect_streamed,reconnect_max_retriesand delay limits. These concern HTTP protocol behavior, typically when opening or reading an HTTP input. They do not establish recovery for an RTMP/RTMPS output. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation. - For a network output, FFmpeg documents the FIFO pseudo-muxer and recovery controls such as
attempt_recovery,max_recovery_attemptsandrecovery_wait_time. Consult the FFmpeg Formats Documentation and the documentation matching your installed build: option availability and behavior can depend on the FFmpeg version. - Alternatively, an external process supervisor can restart FFmpeg after it exits. That only helps with process failure; the supervisor must restart the intended command with the correct input, ingest URL and private stream key.
Neither approach can transmit packets while the connection is unavailable. Recovery can reduce downtime after connectivity returns, but it cannot promise a gap-free broadcast or preserve every packet. YouTube may show an interruption, and the broadcast state can be affected.
Check the FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest details
Confirm the local options before changing a command
Record the installed FFmpeg version and check its local ffmpeg-formats and ffmpeg-protocols documentation for the FIFO and recovery options you plan to use. Do not assume a flag copied from a command written for another release exists or behaves identically in your build.

Use the correct YouTube endpoint and keep the key private
Use the ingestion URL and stream key supplied for the YouTube broadcast. Do not publish or share the key: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to that stream. If you use RTMPS, Google’s setup guidance calls for the RTMPS protocol, a valid ingestion endpoint and path, port 443, and a TLS handshake using the correct hostname/SNI. Configure output recovery with FFmpeg FIFO
The FIFO pseudo-muxer is FFmpeg’s documented route for attempting recovery of a network output. The exact command depends on your existing input, encoding settings, output format and FFmpeg version, so there is no safe universal command to paste in without those details. Preserve your working input and encoding options, and apply the FIFO muxer and its recovery controls to the output as documented for your build.

attempt_recoverycontrols whether the FIFO muxer attempts recovery after an output failure.max_recovery_attemptslimits recovery attempts; check the installed manual for the accepted values and defaults.recovery_wait_timecontrols the wait between recovery attempts; its supported syntax and behavior are version-specific.
Choose retry limits and wait behavior with the outage you expect in mind, and inspect FFmpeg’s log to see whether recovery is actually being attempted. More retries do not create connectivity: if the uplink stays down, FFmpeg still cannot deliver video. A reconnect can also leave a visible gap in the YouTube broadcast.

A supervisor is useful when FFmpeg terminates rather than remaining alive and recovering its output. Configure it to restart the same known-good command, with the same source, output endpoint and stream key, and review its logs alongside FFmpeg’s logs. A supervisor does not replace output-level recovery: if FFmpeg stays running but its network output is broken, a restart policy triggered only by process exit may do nothing.

Test the behavior before relying on it. Make a controlled interruption, restore connectivity, and check both whether FFmpeg recovered or restarted as intended and whether YouTube resumed receiving video. The cited documentation does not guarantee seamless continuity for a single FFmpeg RTMP connection.
Verify that YouTube is receiving video
An open FFmpeg process is not proof that viewers are receiving a picture. Check the YouTube Live control room’s stream status and health after recovery, and confirm that incoming video is present. Google’s LiveStreams API documentation describes stream status and health; an ingestion problem can be reported as videoIngestionStarved.

The same API documentation describes primary and backup ingest addresses. The backup address is an optional destination for simultaneous sending; it is not documented there as automatic failover for one FFmpeg connection. Do not treat it as a substitute for configuring recovery or a second sender.

A cellular failover router can potentially preserve internet reachability when the primary ISP path fails, provided cellular service is available. This is a network-topology precaution, not a guarantee from FFmpeg or YouTube: coverage, data capacity, carrier terms and route changes all matter, and changing routes can still break the active session. Keep software output recovery in place and rehearse the transition.

RTMP and RTMPS are suitable YouTube ingestion choices for ordinary through ultra-low-latency use; RTMPS encrypts the contribution path. HLS and DASH are segment-based alternatives that support additional codecs and may suit higher-resolution contributions, but they bring greater latency and changing protocol is not a general reconnect fix. Google’s ingestion protocol comparison also states RTMP and DASH ingestion cannot be mixed within one broadcast.
Troubleshooting after an outage
- FFmpeg keeps running, but YouTube receives no video: Check FFmpeg’s output errors and confirm you configured network-output recovery rather than relying on HTTP input reconnect options. Verify YouTube’s stream health and incoming-video status.
- FFmpeg exits and never returns: Check the exit log and configure a supervisor to restart the intended command. Confirm its restart policy is active and that the command still has the correct input, endpoint and key.
- RTMPS does not connect: Verify the protocol, ingest URL and path, port 443, and TLS hostname/SNI configuration against Google’s RTMPS guide.
- The stream reconnects but has a gap: A gap is possible when packets could not reach YouTube. Recovery is not seamless delivery; confirm the broadcast is receiving video and decide whether the interruption requires action in YouTube Live.
- Copied recovery flags are rejected: Check the installed FFmpeg version and its matching formats manual. The FIFO options and behavior can vary by release.
- A backup ingest address did not take over: YouTube documents that address as an optional simultaneous destination, not automatic failover for a single sender. Configure a recovery path rather than expecting the second address to rescue the first connection.
