Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play local tracks in order, then add -stream_loop -1 before the playlist’s -i option to repeat the whole playlist indefinitely. Add -re when sending local files to a real-time radio output. The destination, format and authentication settings still depend on your streaming server.
Build a playlist and loop it
Create a text file named playlist.txt with an ffconcat header and one file entry per track:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-vn -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k -f mp3 OUTPUTReplace OUTPUT with the destination and output form required by your radio server. This is an adaptable example, not a tested command or a guarantee that a particular server accepts MP3 in this form. The FFmpeg command-line reference defines -stream_loop as an input option; -1 means infinite looping. Because it applies to an input, put it before the corresponding -i.

What each option does
-rereads the local input at its native rate, equivalent to-readrate 1. It can pace files for a real-time output.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely, rather than stopping when the playlist reaches its end.-f concatselects the concat demuxer, which reads the text playlist and sequences its files.-safe 0permits paths that the default safe mode would reject, including absolute paths in many cases. Use it only with a playlist you control and trust.-i playlist.txtidentifies the playlist input.-vndisables video output;-c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128kselects MP3 audio encoding at the example bitrate;-f mp3selects the output format.
The command’s output side is service-specific. Configure the server’s endpoint or mount, authentication, accepted container and codec, and any required FFmpeg output options for that service. FFmpeg’s streaming examples treat sending output to an endpoint as a separate setup from preparing the input playlist.
Make sure the tracks are compatible
The concat demuxer joins files at the container level; it does not make incompatible tracks uniform. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Before relying on a playlist, check that its entries have the same stream count and compatible codecs and timing parameters.

- Use the concat demuxer for compatible files when you want to sequence them without re-encoding.
- Use the concat filter when the tracks need a re-encoding workflow to make their formats consistent. FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes this filter-based approach from the demuxer.
- Consider the concat protocol only for formats that support file-level concatenation; it is a different method, not a general replacement for the demuxer.
The demuxer uses each file’s duration to set the next file’s timestamps. If a duration is incorrect or unavailable, transitions can have artifacts or gaps. Its duration directive can override the stored duration in the playlist when you know the correct value.

Troubleshoot a playlist that stops or transitions badly
| Symptom | What to check | What to do |
