Anything distributed to a user’s computer—including renderer or main-process code, preload scripts, bundled environment files, and installers—can be inspected by that user. Electron’s security boundaries reduce some risks, but they cannot make a shared key secret from the owner of the machine.
Choose the credential architecture first
ElevenLabs treats API keys as secrets and says not to expose them in client-side code, including apps. Its keys authenticate API requests and are associated with workspace quota. A desktop application is client-side software even when it calls the API from Electron’s main process rather than its renderer.

| Approach | Where the reusable key lives | What it can protect | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Electron-to-ElevenLabs calls with a bundled shared key | On every user’s device, in the app bundle or runtime | Nothing that makes the shared key confidential from the user | Users can inspect distributed files or the running application. Minification, obfuscation, or moving the key into the main process does not solve this. |
| Backend proxy | On a server you control | Centralized access checks, usage limits, monitoring, credential rotation, and network restrictions | Requires a backend and an authenticated, authorized path from the app to it. |
| Electron safeStorage for an individual user’s credential | Encrypted on that user’s device, decrypted by the app when needed | At-rest protection using available OS-backed facilities | Does not conceal a credential from the device owner or protect a product-wide shared key distributed to every user. |
For a shared production credential, use the backend design. Electron’s process isolation helps contain renderer compromise; it is not a way to hide a key from someone who receives and runs the application.
Put the shared production key behind a backend
Make the backend the boundary between Electron and ElevenLabs. The app should authenticate to your service; the service should decide whether that user may perform the requested operation, apply product-specific usage rules, and then make the ElevenLabs request using a server-held credential.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Keep the credential server-side. Store it in a managed secret facility available to the backend, not in app source, build output, or an installer. ElevenLabs recommends service-account keys for backend systems and production workloads; service accounts are a multi-seat workspace feature managed by admins. See ElevenLabs API key guidance and its service-account guidance.
- Authenticate and authorize callers. Do not make a public proxy that lets anyone spend the workspace’s credits. Verify the app user’s identity and check permission for each operation before the backend uses the vendor credential.
- Limit what the credential can do. Give it only the API scopes needed by the integration and set a credit quota. If the backend has stable public egress IP addresses, consider ElevenLabs IP allowlisting; requests from outside the allowlist are rejected.
- Separate environments. Use distinct development and production credentials or service accounts so local experiments and test deployments do not share the production credential.
- Monitor and rotate deliberately. Watch usage and errors for unexpected activity. For a planned rotation, create a replacement with equivalent required permissions, update the backend, confirm requests work, and then delete the old key. User keys can be assigned an expiry between 15 minutes and 30 days; service-account keys are intended for backend and production workloads and do not expire, so manage their lifecycle deliberately.
If a key is exposed, disable or delete it and replace it. ElevenLabs says public GitHub exposure can trigger automatic disabling when third-party disabling is allowed. Do not treat that as a substitute for revocation and rotation.
Harden Electron without mistaking it for key protection
Renderer security matters because a compromised renderer can misuse capabilities the app gives it. Electron recommends reducing those capabilities and checking privileged messages. These measures reduce attack surface; none makes a bundled shared vendor credential confidential.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Keep
nodeIntegrationdisabled for renderer content, and enable context isolation and sandboxing. - Set a restrictive Content Security Policy, limit navigation and new-window creation, and review what content the app loads.
- Validate the sender of privileged IPC messages. Expose narrowly scoped operations through
contextBridge; do not give renderer code raw IPC access or broad filesystem and network capabilities. - Review the actual
webPreferencesand content-loading behavior in your app. Electron has enabled context isolation by default since version 12 and renderer sandboxing by default since version 20, but defaults do not replace that review.
Use Electron’s security checklist, context isolation guidance, IPC guidance, and sandbox guidance when configuring the app.

Use safeStorage only for a user’s locally saved secret
Electron’s safeStorage API runs in the main process and encrypts strings using facilities provided by the operating system. It can be appropriate if your product has a justified workflow in which a user supplies and saves that user’s own credential. It is not a solution for hiding a reusable product key: the app must decrypt the value to use it, and a user who controls the machine can inspect the app or its behavior.

- macOS: safeStorage uses Keychain.
- Windows: safeStorage uses DPAPI.
- Linux: behavior depends on an available secret-store provider, such as Secret Service or a portal provider. Electron documents a
basic_textfallback if no Linux secret store is available; check the selected backend rather than assuming protected storage.
Prefer the asynchronous API where appropriate. Also account for the threat model: a malicious process running as the same logged-in user may be able to access decrypted data available to that user. Consult Electron safeStorage documentation for the current API and platform behavior.
Keep development secrets out of source control and shipped builds
ElevenLabs’ quickstart demonstrates environment-variable configuration for a local script and recommends storing the key as a managed secret. An environment variable is a configuration mechanism, not proof that a key is safe to distribute. A value placed in a bundled .env file or compiled into a desktop application remains available to users.

Putting the key in the main process
The main process has elevated privileges relative to the renderer, but the app files and runtime still reside on the user’s machine. Use process boundaries to reduce renderer risk, not as a promise that users cannot recover a shared key.

Encrypting the shared key with safeStorage
Encryption at rest helps with some forms of disk exposure. If the app can decrypt a shared key to make requests, the machine’s owner can investigate the app or its runtime. safeStorage is for local at-rest protection, not hiding a distributed product credential.
Bundling a .env file or relying on obfuscation
A bundled environment file, minified code, or obfuscation does not change who receives the credential. ElevenLabs’ guidance is not to expose API keys in client-side code; move the reusable key to a backend instead.
