Yes, you need a player that explicitly supports Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. To see a disc at its native 4K resolution, you also need a 4K TV. HDR is separate: an HDR-compatible TV is needed to see the disc’s HDR presentation, but supported setups can play the picture in SDR on a non-HDR TV. The HDMI cable, TV input, and any receiver between the player and TV must also support the signal you want.
Can a regular Blu-ray player play a 4K Blu-ray?
Do not assume that a player labelled “Blu-ray” can play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. UHD Blu-ray is a distinct disc format, so check the player’s specifications for explicit Ultra HD Blu-ray disc playback. For example, Sony identifies its UBP-X700U as a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player and lists UHD disc playback on its product page.

Features such as 4K output or upscaling do not establish that a player can read UHD discs. Confirm disc-format support, not just the resolution in the product name or feature list.
What equipment is needed for 4K resolution?
To see native 4K, the TV must have a 4K display and the entire connection must carry the selected 4K signal. Sony gives 3,840 × 2,160 pixels as the resolution for 4K content over HDMI in its 4K HDMI guidance. A player may send a lower-resolution signal to a compatible older TV, depending on the equipment and settings, but that is not native 4K.

Use a TV HDMI input that supports the desired 4K mode. Inputs can differ, so consult the manual for the exact TV rather than assuming every port has the same capabilities.
Do you need an HDR TV?
No—not just to get a picture from the disc. HDR and resolution are separate: a 4K TV can lack HDR, while a compatible HDR TV can show supported HDR content. To see HDR10 in HDR, the TV and signal path must support HDR10. Do not assume a TV supports a particular HDR format unless its specifications say so.

Sony says that, on applicable players, “HDR features will be adjusted to SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) according to the TV type” when connected to a non-HDR TV in its HDMI and HDR support guidance, modified January 16, 2026. Panasonic likewise says an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc can play in non-HDR quality on a TV without HDR in its DMR-UBT1GL-K operating instructions. The exact behavior depends on the player and TV; SDR playback does not provide the disc’s HDR presentation.
Can the HDMI cable or receiver prevent 4K or HDR?
Yes. The player, cable, TV input, and any receiver or sound system in between all have to pass the signal mode you want. Sony recommends an 18 Gbps-capable High Speed or Premium High Speed HDMI cable for 4K content in its player connection guidance. Panasonic specifies 18 Gbps support for 4K/60p and describes HDCP 2.2 and 4K/60p (4:4:4) support in its 4K/HDR connection guidance. Requirements vary with the device and output mode, so check the manuals for your specific setup before replacing a cable.

An older AV receiver may not pass a 4K signal. Sony recommends setting the player’s output resolution to Auto or connecting the player directly to the TV when the receiver does not support 4K; see its troubleshooting guidance.
How to check a setup that is not showing 4K or HDR
- Confirm disc support: Check the player specifications for Ultra HD Blu-ray disc playback.
- Check the TV: Look up the exact model’s resolution and listed HDR formats.
- Try the right TV input: Use the HDMI port documented for the required 4K or HDR mode.
- Check every device in the path: Confirm that a receiver or sound system can pass the resolution and HDR signal you want.
- Test output and connection: Set the player’s resolution to Auto, or connect it directly to the TV to bypass a receiver.
- Check the cable specification: Compare its capability with the player and TV requirements; Sony’s referenced 4K guidance calls for 18 Gbps support.
- If the picture appears but HDR does not: Verify that the TV supports the disc’s HDR format and that the relevant HDMI setting is enabled.
What to check when buying a player or TV
Match equipment to what you want to watch. A 4K HDR TV is not necessary for every viewer: someone using an existing non-HDR TV may still get SDR playback if the player and connection support it. For native 4K or HDR, check all the relevant links in the signal path.

| What you want | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Play UHD discs | The player explicitly supports Ultra HD Blu-ray disc playback. |
| See native 4K | The TV supports 4K resolution, and the player, cable, selected HDMI input, and any receiver pass the chosen 4K signal. |
| See HDR | The TV supports the HDR format on the disc, and the player and signal path pass it. |
| Use home-theater audio | Check the player’s audio outputs and the receiver’s compatibility with the video signal you plan to pass through it. |
Sony’s UBP-X700U is one example of a player identified for UHD disc playback, not a recommendation for every setup. Sony notes that compatible 4K output requires a compatible display and HDMI cable on its product page. Verify specifications and manuals for the exact models you plan to use.
