How to Keep Earbuds From Falling Out While You Sleep

Check orientation, insertion, tip size, and pillow pressure to help earbuds stay put overnight. Learn when to switch designs and when to stop wearing them.

To keep earbuds in while you sleep, start with clean, dry ears; check that each bud is in the correct ear and inserted at the angle its maker recommends; then try different tip sizes. For side sleeping, check whether the pillow is pushing the bud out or pressing it painfully into your ear. Make one adjustment at a time. If regular earbuds still slip or hurt, consider low-profile earbuds designed for sleep—but no fit or product is guaranteed to work for every ear.

Work through these fit checks

Change one thing at a time so you can tell what helps. A fit that feels secure while sitting may shift when you lie down, so assess it in your usual sleeping position while awake.

  1. Clean and dry your ears and earbuds

Wipe the outer ear with a clean tissue before putting earbuds in. Keep the earbud tips clean, too: earbuds can collect earwax, sweat, skin oils, and dirt. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions, and do not push anything deeply into the ear canal while cleaning. Huawei recommends cleaning the ears before insertion, and Cleveland Clinic recommends regular earbud cleaning.

  2. Check orientation and insertion

Make sure the left and right buds are in the correct ears and that each tip is attached. Insert and rotate each earbud according to its model’s instructions. Aim for a comfortable, secure fit rather than forcing the bud deep into the canal. Huawei advises adjusting the angle and tip position; Samsung’s Galaxy Buds guidance also recommends inserting in the direction of the ear canal and trying another tip size if needed.

Ozlo Sleepbuds® 2 - Sleep Earbuds, Snoring & Noise Masking Headphones
    • SIDE-SLEEPER FIT THAT STAYS PUT ALL NIGHT. Just 1.6g and flush to your ear, so you can roll over without soreness or pop-out. Four soft ear tip sizes for a secure, personal fit.
    • MASKS SNORING, TRAFFIC, AND CITY NOISE. A steady sound shield holds all night long, tuned for the low rumble of partner snoring. Consistent sound keeps the noises that usually wake you from reaching you.
    • 14-HOUR BATTERY LASTS THE WHOLE NIGHT. No waking up to a dead bud at 3am. A private in-ear alarm wakes only you, at a volume you set, without disturbing your partner.
    • 50+ SLEEP SOUNDS, OR STREAM YOUR OWN. White noise, nature, and calm tones for sleep or meditation, plus music and podcasts over Bluetooth. A sleep timer fades audio as you drift off, then switches to masking.
    • PURPOSE-BUILT FOR SLEEP, NOT ADAPTED FROM DAYTIME EARBUDS. The Smart Case measures bedroom noise, light, and temperature overnight, and the Ozlo app (iOS + Android) turns it into sleep insights that sharpen with use.
  3. Try tip sizes separately for each ear

Test a smaller or larger tip, then check that the earbud stays put without painful pressure. Your ears may need different sizes: Huawei specifically notes that different sizes can be used when one earbud tends to loosen. Use only tips confirmed compatible with your exact earbud model. A tip that is too small may be unstable; one that is too large may be uncomfortable. There is no universally correct size.

  4. Adjust any wing or stabilizer

If your model has an ear wing or another stabilizer, try the available combinations with the tip. It should help hold the bud without digging into or pressing painfully on your ear. For its Sleep A10, Soundcore recommends adjusting the tip, wing, and position for comfort and fit.

  5. Test pillow contact while awake

Lie on each side briefly and notice whether the pillow pushes the bud outward or presses it into your ear. A softer pillow or a piercing pillow with an opening for the ear may reduce contact, but comfort is individual. These are Soundcore’s suggestions for its Sleep A10, not independently established comparisons of pillow types.

When regular earbuds are the wrong shape for sleep

If ordinary earbuds protrude, move when the pillow touches them, or remain unstable after fit adjustments, a low-profile sleep-earbud design may be worth considering. Look for a shallow body, several tip sizes, and a wing, loop, or other stabilizing feature. These features may address common fit problems, but they cannot guarantee a secure fit for every sleeper.

  • Long-Lasting Battery with LED Display: Euno 7 Sleep Earphones provide up to 6–8 hours of playback on a single charge, with additional power from the charging case for extended use. These headphones for sleeping support overnight listening and everyday convenience. USB-C fast charging helps reduce downtime, while the LED display on the case clearly shows the remaining battery level of both the earbuds and charging case.

Compare how far the buds protrude, the available tip and stabilizer sizes, whether fit can be adjusted separately for each ear, and whether replacement parts are compatible with the exact model. Also consider whether you can use the controls you need and hear alarms or important sounds. Philips describes its TAN7808GY/00 sleep headphones as having sleep buds, an over-ear loop, and five silicone-tip sizes; those are manufacturer specifications, not independent evidence that they will fit or stay in your ears. Use earbuds overnight with care

Retention is only one part of sleeping with earbuds. Cleveland Clinic discusses earwax buildup, moisture-related infection risk, pressure discomfort for side sleepers, and reduced awareness of important sounds. It quotes audiologist Valerie Pavlovich Ruff, AuD, as saying, “It can be OK, but it depends on how you’re using them.”

  • Smart Sleep Tracking and Insights: Discover how you sleep. The companion app tracks your sleep duration, sleep positions, and even snoring patterns to generate a personalized daily report. Use these easy-to-understand insights to build healthier sleep habits and wake up refreshed.
  • Keep audio low. Ruff suggests about half volume or lower; treat this as her recommendation, not a universal medical prescription.
  • Use a timer when possible. Stopping playback rather than letting audio run all night can limit listening time.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings. Avoid settings that fully block ambient sound, and choose a volume at which a nearby person can still be heard. Ruff calls the possibility of missing important sounds “a significant concern.” Consider whether you will hear alarms or emergencies.
  • Keep the earbuds clean and dry. Regular cleaning helps remove buildup; take care with moisture around the ear and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

These recommendations are discussed in Cleveland Clinic’s article on sleeping with earbuds, published April 8, 2026. They are practical guidance, not a guarantee that overnight use is suitable for everyone.

When to stop wearing them

Do not tighten or force an earbud into place if it hurts. Samsung advises discontinuing use and consulting a doctor if ear pain or skin irritation occurs. Stop using the earbuds and seek medical guidance for persistent pain, skin damage, swelling, discharge, or a change in hearing.
