Start by finding out which program actually holds each balance. Bank rewards, airline miles, and hotel points can have different expiration and forfeiture rules—even when you earned them with a credit card. Check the terms and account status for each program before relying on a purchase, transfer, or redemption to keep a balance alive.
First, identify where each balance lives
Make a separate list of every rewards balance, its program name, and the account where it appears. A card may earn an issuer’s flexible rewards, while a co-branded card may earn directly into an airline or hotel loyalty account. Those are not necessarily the same currency, and the card issuer’s rule may not govern the partner-program balance.

- Issuer rewards: Points or miles held by a bank rewards program, such as American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One miles, or Chase Ultimate Rewards.
- Loyalty-program rewards: Miles or points held by an airline or hotel program, including rewards earned through a co-branded card.
For each balance, check the exact card and program terms, whether the account is open and in good standing, and the account page’s balance and expiration information. Chase distinguishes its issuer rewards from rewards earned through co-branded programs, while Capital One notes that airline mileage expiration policies vary by airline. Chase’s rewards guidance and Capital One’s guide explain those distinctions.

How expiration and forfeiture rules differ
American Express Membership Rewards
American Express says Membership Rewards points have no expiration date, but that does not make them immune to forfeiture. Payment status, card product, cancellation, and account closure can affect retention. If Amex closes a member’s last remaining Membership Rewards-eligible card because of inactivity, Amex says the member has 90 days to use the points. Amex also says unredeemed points are forfeited immediately if the member cancels the Membership Rewards account without another Amex card. Check the specific notice and account terms rather than treating “no expiration date” as a guarantee. See the American Express Membership Rewards FAQ.

Capital One miles
Capital One says its credit card miles do not expire for the life of the account while the account remains open and in good standing. That rule applies to the Capital One card balance; miles already held in an airline loyalty account can have a different expiration policy. Capital One’s guide, dated November 10, 2025, distinguishes card miles from airline miles.
Chase Ultimate Rewards
Chase says Ultimate Rewards generally do not expire while the account is open and not in default. Closing an account or being in default can put rewards at risk, and co-branded partner currencies may follow different terms. Check the rules for the specific card and confirm whether the balance is held by Chase or by a partner. Chase’s rewards guidance covers its issuer rewards and co-branded distinctions.

American Airlines AAdvantage miles
American Airlines says qualifying earning or redemption activity extends mileage expiration to 24 months after the latest qualifying activity. Primary AAdvantage credit cardmembers are not subject to the activity period while their card account is open. The AAdvantage account summary shows the earliest potential expiration date. Confirm that a planned transaction counts under the current terms; not every purchase, transfer, or promotional credit necessarily qualifies. The terms page identifies an effective date of March 1, 2026. Review American’s AAdvantage program terms and expiration information.

- Inventory your rewards. Record the program owner, balance, and account that displays each currency. Keep bank rewards separate from airline or hotel points.
- Read the current terms. For each exact card and loyalty program, look for expiration dates, inactivity periods, account-closure provisions, payment or default conditions, and requirements for eligible-card status.
- Check the activity clock. In programs with inactivity rules, note the latest qualifying activity shown in the account. Verify that the action you plan to take qualifies under that program’s current terms.
- Review account information and alerts. Check the account summary for balances and stated expiration dates. Keep earning or redemption confirmations until the activity posts.
- Pause before changing or closing an account. Find out what happens to the balance before closing a card, changing products, or cancelling a rewards account. If a notice gives a deadline, follow that notice.
- Check transfer rules before moving points. Confirm the destination program’s expiration rules and whether a transfer can be reversed. Amex says points transferred to an airline program cannot be transferred back after a cancellation, so do not move a balance until you understand the consequence.
Why a small qualifying action is not a universal fix
An activity-based deadline can sometimes be extended by qualifying earning or redemption, but the qualifying actions depend on the program. American Airlines describes a 24-month interval tied to qualifying activity; that is an AAdvantage rule, not a general rule for airline or hotel rewards. A card purchase, transfer, or promotional credit should not be assumed to reset another program’s clock unless its current terms say it does.

Likewise, “points do not expire” addresses only calendar expiration under a particular rule. A balance can still be vulnerable to account closure, delinquency, default, cancellation, or loss of eligible-card status. Keep the rule and the account condition together when deciding whether a balance is safe.
