To reduce the risk of a magnetic-stripe card being demagnetized, keep it away from magnets—or choose a MagSafe wallet whose maker explicitly documents magnetic-stripe compatibility for that exact model. Apple warns that magnets can damage a magnetic strip, but its published test applies to a specific Apple wallet configuration, not every MagSafe wallet.
Why a MagSafe wallet can be a concern
A magnetic stripe stores information magnetically, so a nearby magnet can affect it. Apple’s care guidance for its titanium Apple Card says not to place or store the card near magnets and specifically warns that a magnetic purse or bag latch can demagnetize the strip. Apple’s card-care guidance was published February 20, 2026.

That warning establishes a reason to be cautious around magnets; it does not establish a failure rate for MagSafe wallets. The available sources do not quantify how often cards are demagnetized in them, so there is no reliable percentage to use when estimating the risk.

Look for a statement from the wallet maker that covers magnetic-stripe cards and the exact model you plan to use. A general claim about magnets, card storage or RFID blocking is not the same as documented magnetic-stripe compatibility.

- Check that the documentation names the specific wallet model, not just the brand or product family.
- Look for a test that uses low-coercivity (LoCo) magnetic-stripe cards and checks whether the card remains readable after exposure.
- Confirm that the test covers the card orientation and the wallet/device arrangement you expect to use.
- Treat RFID or NFC blocking claims separately; they do not, by themselves, establish protection for a magnetic stripe.
Apple’s Accessory Design Guidelines for Apple Devices, dated September 9, 2025, say that a MagSafe case’s integrated magnet array must not interfere with magnetic-stripe cards in an attached iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe. The document is available through a third-party mirror.
What Apple’s wallet test does—and does not—show
Apple’s documented verification procedure uses LoCo cards, places the stripe toward the magnets with the card against the wallet’s magnetic side, attaches the wallet to the device for 10 seconds, then checks that the card is readable and its recorded contents have not changed. This is a procedure for the Apple accessory configuration described in the document, not a universal standard or an independent test of third-party wallets.

It also does not show how an untested wallet performs. Do not assume that another product has the same design, shielding or compatibility just because it attaches to an iPhone with MagSafe.

If avoiding stripe damage is the priority, carry the stripe card away from magnets when practical. If you continue using a MagSafe wallet, rely on model-specific compatibility documentation rather than assuming the card’s position inside the wallet makes it safe. If a stripe card stops reading, the sources cited here do not establish whether the wallet caused the problem; seek guidance from the card issuer about replacement or other payment options.

Magnetic stripes and Apple Pay are different
Apple Pay uses a device-specific Device Account Number stored in the Secure Element. Apple says the issuer can prevent that number from being used on a magnetic-stripe card, by phone or on websites. That is a security and payment-tokenization feature, not evidence that a physical card’s stripe is protected inside a wallet. Apple’s Apple Pay security overview explains the distinction.
The cited material addresses magnetic-stripe cards and the described Apple wallet test. It does not establish whether every contactless chip, RFID or NFC card, hotel key or transit card is safe or unsafe around every MagSafe accessory.
