Keep luggage away from beds and floors while you travel, inspect the sleeping area and luggage rack before use, and unpack directly into laundry when you get home. Put dryer-safe clothes through a high-heat dryer cycle, inspect the suitcase, and store it outside the bedroom. If you suspect exposure, seal belongings in sturdy plastic bags until they can be treated; a bag contains bed bugs but does not kill them.
This routine follows the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidance in Tips for Travel and Protecting Your Home from Bed Bugs. It reduces the chance that a bed bug hitchhiking on fabric, a seam or a suitcase reaches your bedroom, without assuming that every hotel has an infestation.

Can bed bugs travel home in luggage?
Yes. Bed bugs are capable hitchhikers: they can hide in luggage seams, pockets, clothing folds and other belongings. Travel does not guarantee that you will encounter them, and finding none during a quick glance does not prove a room is clear. The practical goal is to prevent contact, contain anything that may have been exposed, treat items that can safely be treated, and keep luggage out of the bedroom.
A suitcase is a transport route, not proof of an infestation. A single insect or egg can be difficult to spot, which is why a consistent arrival routine is more dependable than relying on visual certainty.

What to do before sleeping in a hotel or rental
Do the room check before opening your suitcase fully or placing clothes around the room. EPA says a flashlight can help, but its travel guidance does not require special equipment.
Inspect the bed area
- Pull back bedding and examine mattress seams, piping, labels and corners.
- Look at the headboard and the joints or gaps where it meets the wall or bed frame.
- Pay attention to dark spotting, shed skins, eggs or live insects. Do not treat an isolated mark as proof by itself; the point is to identify evidence before your belongings are distributed.
If you see evidence that concerns you, stop unpacking and ask the property for another room or other assistance. Do not move your suitcase onto another bed while deciding what to do.
Check the luggage rack
Inspect the rack, including its straps, hinges and underside, before using it. Put the suitcase on the inspected rack rather than on the bed or floor. Keeping the case elevated and away from sleeping surfaces removes common contact opportunities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep clothing controlled
Leave clothing in the suitcase or in a closed bag when it is not being worn. Avoid piles on the bed, upholstered chairs or carpet. The less fabric that touches room surfaces, the fewer places a hitchhiking insect has to move.
How do I keep bed bugs from getting into my home after travel?
Think of the trip home as a controlled transfer rather than a normal unpacking job. Keep the suitcase closed while it is in a car, rideshare, airport or other shared space. When you arrive, take it directly to a laundry room, garage, basement or another area away from bedrooms. Do not set it on a bed, sofa or bedroom floor even if you plan to open it only briefly.
Have a clean container or clear work surface ready before opening the case. Move one category at a time: clothing to the laundry area, shoes and accessories to an inspection surface, and questionable items into a sealable bag. Keeping categories separate reduces the chance that a treated load contacts an unprocessed item.
If you share laundry facilities, carry clothing in a closed bag and keep it closed until it is placed in the washer or dryer. Do not shake garments out in a bedroom or hallway. The aim is to avoid scattering anything that may be in a fold or seam.

How to handle luggage during the stay
Use one controlled opening area
Open the case on the inspected rack and close it again after taking out what you need. Keep pockets, toiletry compartments and laundry bags closed when possible. This is a contact-avoidance measure, not a guarantee that an insect cannot enter.

Separate worn clothing
Place worn items in a closed laundry bag or directly back into the suitcase rather than leaving them around the room. A large sealable plastic storage bag can organize travel laundry and later contain potentially exposed belongings, but it is not a pesticide or killing treatment.
Do not use sprays as a blanket precaution
Do not spray a suitcase simply because you traveled. Pesticide directions are product- and surface-specific. The EPA-hosted label for registration 239-2746, dated March 24, 2025, is an example of directions that apply only to that labeled product and cannot be generalized to every luggage material or household spray: read the label before considering any pesticide use.
What should I do with my suitcase after staying in a hotel?
Keep the suitcase isolated while you process its contents. Empty every pocket and compartment, then examine seams, zipper tracks, folds, wheels, handles, labels and the lining. Check the exterior as well as the main compartment. A flashlight is optional and can make dark seams easier to see, but no specialized inspection kit is required.

Put questionable loose items in sturdy, sealable plastic bags and label them with their contents and date. The bags prevent movement while you arrange treatment; they are not a killing method.
If the inspection finds nothing concerning, still store the suitcase in a garage, basement or another location outside the bedroom. Do not place it under the bed. Keeping a case out of the sleeping area is useful even when no evidence was found because a quick inspection cannot guarantee that every seam is clear.
What to do as soon as you arrive home
Make the entry routine part of returning from every trip, especially when the suitcase has been in hotel rooms, shared transport or other unfamiliar spaces. Complete it before putting the case on a bed.
1. Choose a non-bedroom unpacking area
Use a laundry room, mudroom, garage, basement or another hard-surface area away from bedrooms. If you have no separate space, place the suitcase on a surface that can be inspected and keep it away from beds and upholstered furniture. Do not unpack on the bedroom floor.
2. Move clothes directly to laundry
Take clothing from the suitcase straight to the washing machine or laundry area. Do not set it on a bed, chair or closet floor first. For items that can tolerate it, use a high-heat dryer cycle. EPA states that high-temperature dryer time kills bed bugs, while washing alone generally does not; its travel page puts it plainly: “time in a dryer at high temperatures kills the bed bugs (just washing will generally not kill bed bugs).” See EPA’s travel guidance.

Follow every garment’s care label. Heat advice applies to dryer-safe items, and a cycle should not be presented as a verified internal temperature for every machine or load. Items that cannot tolerate high heat need a different, appropriately qualified treatment rather than improvised heating.
3. Keep treated items separate
After drying, put clean items in a clean container or area that has not contacted the suitcase or unprocessed laundry. This prevents treated clothing from recontacting a potentially exposed case.
4. Inspect the suitcase methodically
With the case isolated from the bedroom, empty pockets and compartments and examine seams, zippers, folds, wheels, handles and the lining. Use a flashlight if it improves visibility. Look for live insects, eggs, shed skins or dark spotting. Check both the interior and exterior; a brief look at the main compartment is not enough.
Vacuuming visible debris can remove material, but it is not a stand-alone guarantee of eradication. If you vacuum, empty and dispose of the contents in a sealed bag according to local waste rules, and continue with containment and a suitable treatment plan.
5. Store the case outside the bedroom
Once unpacked, keep the suitcase in a basement, garage or another location away from sleeping areas. Never slide it under the bed. EPA includes this storage step in Protecting Your Home from Bed Bugs because storage location determines whether a remaining insect has a direct route to a sleeping person.
What if some items cannot go in a dryer?
Do not guess at a heat setting for leather, electronics, adhesives, delicate fabrics or a structured suitcase. Keep those articles sealed and separated from bedrooms until you have a treatment plan. EPA gives at least 120°F (approximately 49°C) for 90 minutes as professional heat-treatment guidance for infested articles such as luggage, specifically to ensure eggs are killed.
That parameter does not turn an oven, car, heater, attic or sunny patio into a reliable treatment chamber. Temperatures can vary between the center and edges of an item, and improvised heating can damage belongings or create fire and poisoning hazards. Ask a qualified provider how the article will be heated throughout, how temperature and time are monitored, and what preparation is required.
Containment, treatment and storage are different jobs
Confusing these purposes leads to false reassurance. Use each measure for what it can actually do.

EPA’s detailed parameters appear in Controlling Bed Bugs Using Integrated Pest Management. The 30-minute high-temperature figure applies to dryer-safe bedding and clothing. The 120°F-for-90-minutes figure is for heat treatment of infested articles that cannot go in a clothes dryer and should be handled as professional guidance.
What if you find a bed bug or other evidence?
Keep belongings contained
Do not carry the suitcase through bedrooms while trying to identify what you found. Close it, or place potentially affected items in sealable plastic bags, and keep those bags in the isolated area. Marking bags by contents and date can help you avoid opening them repeatedly, but the bags remain containment only.
Distinguish a concern from confirmation
A dark mark, shed fragment or unexplained bite is not, by itself, proof of bed bugs. Look for a pattern of physical evidence and avoid spreading belongings while you investigate. If you are unsure whether an insect is a bed bug, preserve it in a sealed container or bag for identification rather than carrying it from room to room.

There is no single bag, wash cycle, spray or quick visual check that reliably resolves an established infestation. Avoid homemade heat devices and do not assume that leaving a case in a vehicle, outdoors or in the sun reaches a controlled temperature throughout every seam and pocket.
Use an integrated pest management response
EPA describes bed bug control as integrated pest management (IPM): inspection, monitoring, physical and heat measures, carefully selected pesticides when appropriate, and follow-up. Its Do-it-yourself Bed Bug Control and Top Ten Tips to Prevent or Control Bed Bugs explain why treatment needs a plan rather than a one-time action.
Contact a qualified pest-management professional when you find convincing evidence, when insects appear in more than one location, or when you cannot safely isolate and treat belongings. Ask what inspection method, treatment temperatures, follow-up visits and preparation steps are included. Keep potentially affected items contained while arranging the inspection.
Consider monitoring after a suspected exposure
Interceptors placed under bed legs can help detect activity as part of an IPM plan, but they are monitoring devices, not a substitute for inspection or treatment. A professional can advise whether they fit your room and situation.

Common mistakes that spread luggage-borne bed bugs
- Putting the suitcase on the bed “just for a minute.” A bed is a direct route to a sleeping person; use an inspected rack instead.
- Unpacking on the bedroom floor. Move clothes directly to laundry in an isolated area.
- Assuming a wash cycle is enough. EPA distinguishes washing from high-temperature dryer treatment.
- Returning clean clothes to an untreated case. Keep dried items separate from the suitcase until the case has been inspected and addressed.
- Storing luggage under the bed. Use a basement, garage or another location outside the bedroom.
- Believing a sealed bag is a cure. Bags contain movement; they do not kill insects or eggs.
- Spraying without reading a label. Product directions differ by formulation and surface, and a label for one product is not universal luggage advice.
- Using an oven, heater or improvised car treatment. Uneven temperatures can leave eggs alive and create fire, damage or poisoning hazards.
A practical arrival checklist
Save this sequence with your travel checklist:
- Before sleeping away from home, inspect mattress seams, the headboard and the luggage rack.
- Keep the suitcase on the inspected rack, never on the bed or floor.
- Keep worn clothing closed in the case or a laundry bag.
- At home, take the suitcase to a non-bedroom area before opening it.
- Put dryer-safe clothing directly into laundry and use high heat according to care labels.
- Inspect pockets, seams, zippers, lining, wheels and handles.
- Keep treated items away from the unprocessed suitcase and other exposed belongings.
- Seal suspicious items in sturdy plastic bags until suitable treatment is arranged.
- Store the suitcase outside the bedroom, never under the bed.
- If evidence persists or spreads, arrange an inspection and IPM-informed professional response.
What to pack for prevention
You do not need a specialized kit. The most useful optional items are large sealable plastic bags for separating laundry or containing suspected belongings, and a small flashlight to make seams and rack surfaces easier to see. Neither item kills bed bugs, and neither replaces the dryer, inspection and storage steps. Keep the supplies accessible so they are used before clothing is distributed around a room.

Why this routine works
Each step interrupts a different part of the hitchhiking pathway. Inspecting before unpacking can reveal a problem while your belongings are still contained. Keeping luggage elevated and away from beds and floors lowers contact opportunities. Direct-to-laundry handling prevents worn clothing from becoming a bedroom pile. High heat addresses dryer-safe fabrics; sealed bags hold questionable items in one place; and off-bedroom storage reduces access to the room where people sleep. When those measures are combined with inspection and professional IPM when needed, they are more dependable than any single household shortcut.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can bed bugs travel home in luggage?
Yes. They can hitchhike in seams, pockets, clothing folds and other belongings. Keep luggage off beds and floors, inspect it on arrival, move clothing directly to laundry, and store the case outside the bedroom.
How do I keep bed bugs from getting into my home after travel?
Inspect the room before unpacking, keep the suitcase on an inspected rack, use closed laundry bags, unpack in a non-bedroom area, dry suitable items on high heat, inspect the case and contain anything suspicious in sealed bags.

Does washing clothes kill bed bugs?
Washing alone generally does not. EPA says high-temperature dryer time kills bed bugs, so use a high-heat cycle for items whose care labels allow it. Keep treated items separate from an unprocessed suitcase.
Do plastic bags kill bed bugs?
No. Sturdy sealable bags contain potentially exposed belongings and reduce movement while treatment is arranged, but they are not a pesticide or guaranteed killing method.
Can I spray my luggage as a precaution?
Do not spray automatically. Pesticide directions are specific to the product, surface and use site. Read the complete label and obtain qualified advice; one product label cannot be generalized to every suitcase material.
What temperature treats luggage that cannot go in a dryer?
EPA gives at least 120°F (about 49°C) for 90 minutes as professional heat-treatment guidance for infested articles such as luggage. Do not attempt to reproduce it with an oven, car, heater or improvised chamber.
When should I call a professional?
Arrange qualified inspection and an IPM-informed response when you find convincing evidence, see activity in more than one location, or cannot safely isolate and treat belongings. Ask about inspection, treatment temperatures, preparation and follow-up.
The Bottom Line
Keep luggage off beds and floors, inspect before unpacking, move clothing directly to laundry, use high heat only for dryer-safe items, contain suspects in sealed bags, and store suitcases outside the bedroom. If evidence remains, use qualified integrated pest management rather than a single household shortcut.
