How to Keep Audio in Sync on an FFmpeg YouTube Livestream

Find out whether your FFmpeg stream has a fixed audio offset or growing drift, inspect timestamps and clocks, and choose an appropriate correction.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First determine whether the audio is consistently early or late, or whether the gap grows over time. Use a measured -itsoffset for a fixed offset; investigate timestamps and capture clocks when sync drifts. A fixed offset is not a general fix for continuing drift.

Measure the sync problem before changing the command

Note whether audio leads or trails the video, estimate the gap, and compare it near the start of the stream with the gap later on. If it stays about the same, you may have a fixed offset. If it changes, look for a continuing timing mismatch instead.

FFmpeg’s ffplay can display audio/video synchronization drift with -stats. Its documented default master clock is audio. The statistic helps you observe playback behavior; it does not identify which device, clock, or timestamp caused the problem. Check the result in the actual streaming path as well. See the FFmpeg Project’s ffplay documentation.

Check inputs, timestamps, and clocks

Before editing options, save the complete command and uncut console output. Record the FFmpeg version, input order and formats, stream mapping, reported start times, and relevant warnings. These details can change how a sync issue should be diagnosed.

  • Check whether the audio and video inputs have usable start timestamps.
  • For separate live capture devices, find out whether their timestamps come from the same clock source.
  • Reproduce any suspected input-order effect in your own setup rather than assuming order is the cause.

FFmpeg’s documentation says that “The source timestamps of the two inputs should derive from the same clock source for expected results” when using -isync. A 2020 FFmpeg-user mailing-list report described roughly half a second of audio delay with a webcam and PulseAudio input after the input order was changed. That is one setup, not a general rule that audio must always follow video in the command.

Correct a fixed offset with -itsoffset

The FFmpeg Project documents -itsoffset as “Set the input time offset.” The option adds the specified duration to timestamps of the input it precedes. A positive offset delays that input. Apply it to the input that is early, using a value you measured, then measure again.

ffmpeg -i video_source -itsoffset OFFSET -i audio_source
  ... output

This is an illustrative command pattern, not a ready-to-run fix. Replace the inputs and OFFSET with values appropriate to your setup. If audio is early, a positive offset on the audio input may help; if audio is already late, it makes the mismatch worse. Check the option’s placement and behavior against the FFmpeg documentation for your installed version.

Use -isync only when its timing conditions fit

-isync adjusts an input’s timestamps by the difference between its start time and that of a reference input. It is appropriate only when the inputs have usable start timestamps and their timestamps derive from the same clock source. If a starting timestamp is absent, FFmpeg says no adjustment is made.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

There is also a documented interaction with -copyts: when using -isync with -copyts, set -start_at_zero as well. Timestamp-preservation options affect processing, so do not add them casually. Consult the official option documentation and verify the result in your stream.

If the gap grows, investigate ongoing drift

A constant offset can correct a starting timing relationship; it does not establish that two clocks stay aligned. Compare measurements at different points in the stream, inspect timestamp progression and continuity, and test one change at a time. If separate capture devices use different clocks, investigate their capture and timing behavior rather than repeatedly increasing a fixed offset.

A 2020 FFmpeg-user discussion included an aresample=async=1 example, but that historical example does not establish a universal live-stream fix. Filter behavior and side effects depend on the actual command and FFmpeg version. Validate any resampling change against the observed stream rather than copying a filter value without diagnosing the cause.

Choose the next step by symptom

What you observe Next step Limit to keep in mind
A stable, measured offset Apply -itsoffset to the input that needs delaying, then measure again. A wrong sign or target input increases the error; a fixed offset does not resolve continuing drift.
Separate inputs with a shared clock and valid start timestamps Consider -isync with the other input as the reference. Expected results depend on the clock source and available start timestamps; account for the -copyts interaction.
You need to observe playback drift Use ffplay -stats and compare readings over time. The display does not identify the root cause, and you should also check the actual streaming path.
The gap changes during operation Inspect clocks and timestamp progression; test any audio-resampling change only against evidence from your setup. A historical mailing-list example is not a universal recommendation.

Troubleshooting details to preserve

  • Audio gets worse after adding an offset: confirm which input the option precedes, whether audio is early or late, and the sign and measured duration. A positive offset delays the affected input.
  • -isync appears to do nothing: check that both inputs have start timestamps and share a clock source. FFmpeg makes no adjustment if a starting timestamp is absent.
  • Preview looks right but the YouTube stream does not: compare the local playback path with the actual stream and retain the full command and logs for diagnosis.
  • You are considering silent audio or a platform-specific setting: a 2020 mailing-list suggestion about silent audio is historical forum advice, not current YouTube policy. Verify ingest requirements against current official YouTube guidance; no current official YouTube requirements source is cited here.
