Short answer: you cannot replace the FFmpeg executable underneath a running process and keep that process’s YouTube connection intact. A restart ends the current FFmpeg process and its output connection. To reduce interruption risk, stage and test a second encoder, then make a controlled handoff using a workflow you have verified for your YouTube event. Do not assume the handoff will be gapless.
What happens when you update FFmpeg?
The FFmpeg binary on disk and an FFmpeg process already running are separate. Updating a package or replacing a binary does not convert the active process to the new build. The running process continues with the executable image it already loaded; restarting it creates a new process and ends the old process’s current connection to YouTube.
That means there is no general command that upgrades the sole active FFmpeg process in place while preserving its ingest connection. A service manager may start FFmpeg again after a qualifying failure, but that is recovery after a process exit—not continuous output from the old process.
Choose an update approach
| Approach | Continuity implications | Rollback and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Update the installed package, then restart the service | The restart stops the current process and connection; a viewer-visible interruption is possible. | Usually straightforward with the distribution’s supported package channel. Keep a recoverable prior package version and configuration if rollback matters. |
| Install a candidate build alongside the current one or on a second VPS | Lets you inspect and test the candidate while the old encoder remains available. The handoff still depends on the event and ingest workflow; no universal zero-gap result is established. | Provides a clearer path back to the old encoder, at the cost of extra CPU, bandwidth, setup, and coordination. |
For routine maintenance, prefer the package channel supported by your distribution unless you need a codec, protocol, or fix that it does not provide. For a custom or newer build, install it alongside the existing executable or on a separate VPS. Package-channel suitability depends on your distribution release and security policy; check that system’s official guidance rather than assuming one source is right for every VPS.

Update FFmpeg with a staged, tested handoff
-
Record the current working setup
Before changing anything, note the distribution and release, installed FFmpeg version and build configuration, executable path, package source, complete command line, environment and configuration files, systemd unit, input source, output protocol, and destination. Confirm the current event’s status and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not expose it in logs, public scripts, or screenshots.
-
Install the candidate without replacing the live encoder
Use the supported package channel for an ordinary update, or install a custom/newer candidate at a separate path or on a second VPS. Avoid overwriting the only known-good executable before you have tested the candidate and preserved a way to restore the prior build.

Check the candidate’s build and options
Run
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -buildconfagainst the candidate executable. Confirm that the encoders, decoders, and protocols your command requires are present. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly for the newest revision, so verify option availability against the version and build you actually installed, not just the latest online manual. -
Test on an isolated or non-public event
Send representative video motion and audio through the candidate to the intended YouTube workflow. Check that YouTube receives both audio and video, inspect stream-health messages in Live Control Room, and confirm the actual codec, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, and keyframe interval. A process that starts successfully is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Coordinate the handoff
Keep the old process running until the candidate has passed its checks. Coordinate stopping one sender and activating the other according to the actual event’s ingest workflow. Do not blindly run two FFmpeg publishers to the same live event or stream key: YouTube’s cited guidance does not define concurrent-publisher handoff behavior. Validate that setup in advance. If your event cannot accept a tested parallel sender, schedule a short interruption or use a separately validated ingest architecture rather than promising seamless replacement.
-
Verify the new stream and retain rollback
After the cutover, check that the replacement process remains active, YouTube receives video and audio, stream health is acceptable, and viewers can play the stream. Keep the old executable or recoverable package version, the previous service configuration, and the prior command line until the replacement has proved stable. If checks fail, stop the replacement and restore the previous build and command using the rollback procedure you tested.

What systemd can—and cannot—do
systemctl restart stops and then starts a unit. It is not a live binary swap: the old FFmpeg process and its current output connection end when it is stopped. A Restart= policy such as Restart=on-failure controls whether systemd starts the process again after specified exits or failures. It does not make systemd notice that the executable on disk changed, nor does it preserve the old stream connection.
systemctl reload asks a service to reload its configuration if that particular service implements reload support. systemctl daemon-reload makes systemd reread unit definitions after you change a unit file; it does not reload FFmpeg or keep its stream alive. Do not treat systemctl reload ffmpeg as an FFmpeg upgrade method unless your specific unit and wrapper implement a reload action that replaces the running executable and its output connection—behavior the cited manuals do not establish. Consult the systemd and systemctl manuals for your distribution release when applying exact commands. Ubuntu’s package-file guidance, for example, shows reloading unit definitions after unit changes and then verifying service status.

Match YouTube’s encoder settings and monitor health
YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. It also recommends testing before the stream with representative audio and video motion and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Match settings to the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate instead of copying a bitrate from a different format.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate example: YouTube’s table lists H.264 at 1080p30 with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Those figures apply to that listed format; consult the current YouTube table for other codecs, resolutions, and frame rates.
- Connection and health: Use a reliable upload connection, confirm YouTube is receiving the intended audio and video, and watch Live Control Room messages during testing and after the handoff.
FFmpeg’s command-line behavior and stream-copy versus transcoding choices are described in its command-line documentation; which options apply depends on your command, input, output, and installed build. Use the manuals for your actual version when checking option syntax.
Troubleshooting an update or handoff
- The service starts but YouTube shows no incoming video: A running PID only proves that a process exists. Recheck the destination, stream key, output protocol, network access, and the exact command line; then inspect YouTube’s ingest status and stream-health messages.
- The new build rejects an option or cannot use a codec/protocol: Compare
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -buildconfwith the candidate’s requirements. The installed build may lack a required component, or the option may differ from the online documentation for the newest revision. Restore the known-good build if necessary. - The service did not restart after FFmpeg was updated: Replacing the executable on disk does not trigger a process restart. Check the unit’s status and restart policy; schedule an intentional restart or use the staged handoff rather than expecting systemd to detect the file change.
- A restart policy brought FFmpeg back, but viewers saw a gap: That policy can restart a failed process, but it does not preserve its prior connection. For the next update, test a second encoder and the event handoff, or schedule an interruption.
- The candidate appears healthy but the event is unstable: Check YouTube’s health messages and verify the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Test representative motion and audio, and ensure the upload connection is reliable.
- The candidate fails after cutover: Stop it and restore the saved command, service configuration, and prior executable or package version. Do not remove the rollback materials until the new stream has remained stable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded recordings rather than a camera or real-time VPS input, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the loop running in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. You can stream the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
