Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start by removing food and water that attract ants, then trace and seal the route they use to enter. If you still need bait, use only a product labeled for that location and keep every part of it out of your pet’s reach. No bait station or pesticide should be assumed pet-safe simply because it is enclosed or placed under a cabinet.
1. Remove what is attracting ants
Clean crumbs, grease, and spills promptly, and wipe down surfaces where food has been prepared. Secure garbage and rinse food containers before recycling. Store pantry supplies and pet food in insect-proof containers, and avoid leaving pet food out where ants can forage.

Fix leaks and remove standing water where practical. Food residue and moisture can keep ants returning even after a trail has been disrupted. Cornell University’s ant-control guidance is not the cited source here; see Cornell University’s ant guidance and the University of Minnesota Extension’s ant guidance for sanitation and storage advice.
2. Find and close the route inside
Watch where the ants travel, then follow the trail toward a likely entry point. Seal suitable small gaps and cracks around doors, windows, foundations, plumbing, and utility penetrations. Keep doors and windows sealed and repair openings where lines or pipes enter the home, as appropriate for the structure.

3. Use bait only if needed—and control access
Ant bait can work because foraging workers carry it back to nestmates. But ants have to accept the bait, and competing food can make it less appealing. If ants ignore one bait, do not assume that adding more will solve the problem; the bait’s food attractant may not suit the ants present.
Choose a product whose label permits use against ants in the intended location. Put it where ants are active, but where your pet cannot reach, chew, or otherwise contact any part of the station. An enclosed station is not automatically inaccessible: consider your animal’s ability to climb, push, or chew, as well as its usual access to the area. Never put bait on food-preparation surfaces or near food. UF/IFAS Extension’s guidance is explicit: “Ensure that pets cannot access any part of the bait station.”

Do not spray insecticide around bait; the approach depends on ants visiting and carrying it. Keep pesticide products in their original containers and locked away from pets. If a pet chews a station or may have eaten bait, contact a veterinarian or the phone number on the pesticide label, and have the product information available.

4. Treat other pesticide applications according to the label
If using a pesticide application other than bait, follow that product’s exact directions. Remove pets, toys, food bowls, and bedding before treatment, and keep pets out until the label says the area is safe. The National Pesticide Information Center’s general advice is to wait until treated areas are dry and well ventilated, but product labels may specify different or more detailed directions. Do not spray near pet food or water dishes.

How the options differ
| Approach | What it does | Pet-contact considerations | What affects persistence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cleaning and food storage | Removes food attractants. | No pesticide bait exposure. | Requires keeping up with spills, garbage, and food storage. |
| Sealing entry points | Blocks routes into the kitchen. | No pesticide bait exposure. | Depends on finding and closing suitable openings. |
| Labeled ant bait | Workers may carry accepted bait to nestmates. | Requires keeping every part inaccessible and following the label. | Depends on bait acceptance and limiting competing food. |
| Other pesticide application | Uses a product-specific treatment method. | Requires following the label’s pet-removal and re-entry directions. | Depends on the product and its label directions. |
What not to assume
- “Pet-safe” is not an unconditional pesticide category. Risk depends on both toxicity and exposure; prevent access and follow the product label.
- Do not use a universal re-entry time, ingredient recommendation, or ingestion treatment. Those depend on the exact product and the animal.
- Do not make homemade pesticide bait accessible to pets.
- Wiping with vinegar and water may temporarily disrupt ant trails, according to University of Minnesota Extension, but it does not replace sanitation, sealing entry points, or appropriately used bait.
