How to Keep an Oracle Cloud YouTube Stream Running After SSH Disconnects

Launch a YouTube encoder with nohup, redirected logs, and & to survive SSH logout. See how to verify the stream and where nohup's limits begin.

To keep an Oracle Cloud encoder running after you close SSH, launch it with nohup, redirect its input and output, and put it in the background with &. This protects against an SSH logout or hangup; it does not restart a crashed encoder, recover a failed network connection, or make the stream survive a VM stop or reboot. The encoder must remain alive and continue sending valid video to YouTube.

Run the encoder independently of your SSH session

For a one-off command, use this shell pattern, replacing your-encoder-command with the command that starts your encoder:

nohup your-encoder-command >stream.log 2>&1 < /dev/null &
  • nohup makes the command ignore hangup signals, so logging out does not by itself stop it.
  • >stream.log sends standard output to a log file in the current directory.
  • 2>&1 sends standard error to the same log, so encoder errors are recorded too.
  • < /dev/null disconnects standard input from the terminal.
  • & backgrounds the command. nohup does not do this automatically.

GNU Coreutils 9.11 documents that nohup ignores hangup signals and that the user must explicitly background the command. Without output redirection, terminal output is otherwise sent to nohup.out. GNU Coreutils: nohup invocation.

Configure the encoder to send a valid YouTube stream

Keeping the process alive is only one part of the job. In the encoder, use the YouTube stream URL and the stream key associated with your broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup covers both software and standalone hardware encoders; the procedure here concerns a command-line encoder running on the cloud VM. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

  • Keep the stream key private. Do not put a real key in a public script, example, screenshot, or log.
  • YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Choose it where your encoder and configuration support it.
  • Use constant bitrate and a quality that fits the VM’s available upload connection. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health during the event.

Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance for the bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe configuration appropriate to the quality you intend to send; do not assume that a process running without errors means YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Verify the process and the broadcast after reconnecting

  1. Start the encoder using the nohup pattern, making sure the command itself is correct and the stream key and YouTube stream URL are configured privately.
  2. Wait for the encoder to initialize, then check the log in the same directory: tail -n 50 stream.log. Look for startup errors, connection failures, or repeated disconnect messages.
  3. Disconnect SSH, reconnect to the VM, and inspect whether the encoder process is still present using the process-inspection method available on your Oracle Linux image. Also review stream.log for new output after the disconnect.
  4. Check YouTube’s live control room or stream-health indicator while the broadcast is expected to be active. A surviving process is not proof that it is still delivering usable video.

YouTube recommends testing a stream and monitoring its health. A test with representative motion and audio can reveal problems that a static or silent test may miss. YouTube encoder settings and stream-health guidance.

Know what nohup does—and does not—protect against

nohup handles the hangup/logout case. It is not a process supervisor: it does not relaunch the encoder after a crash, restore a stream after a network interruption, or restart the command after a VM reboot or stop. A service manager or other supervisor may be more suitable when restart-on-failure or boot persistence is required, but setup and behavior depend on the Oracle Linux image and configuration. Confirm image-specific instructions before relying on a service definition.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending content. That is an archiving rule, not a promise that a stream will remain uninterrupted, and it should not be extended to streams at or beyond 12 hours. YouTube Help: encoder setup and stream archiving.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The command stops when SSH closes: confirm that it was launched with nohup and ends with &. Check that the actual encoder command was not started in a separate foreground-only shell or wrapper that exits.
  • The process is running but YouTube shows no healthy stream: inspect stream.log for encoder or connection errors, verify the configured stream URL and key in the encoder, and check YouTube’s stream-health information. A process can run without delivering valid video.
  • The log is empty or errors are missing: confirm that the command was launched from a directory where it can create stream.log and that output redirection is in place. Standard output and standard error are both directed to that file by the example.
  • The stream stops after a crash or reboot: this is outside nohup‘s scope. Investigate a supervisor configured for your exact image if automatic restart or startup persistence is needed.
  • You are looking for an Oracle video-streaming feature: Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Streaming is a managed service for high-volume data messages, not a service that keeps an SSH-launched YouTube video encoder alive. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Streaming FAQ.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that loops uploaded recordings around the clock, StreamNeo avoids leaving a command running on your Oracle VM: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from its cloud service; it does not broadcast from a camera.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide.
