Recommended Droplet sizes by workload
The right size depends on what the server does to the video. Encoding and transcoding consume more CPU than forwarding an already encoded stream, and resolution, frame rate, codec, scene complexity, and concurrent streams all affect demand. DigitalOcean recommends benchmarking and load testing before settling on a Droplet type.

DigitalOcean describes CPU-Optimized Droplets as dedicated-CPU configurations for consistent-performance workloads, including media streaming. Its shared CPU plans do not guarantee access to a full hyper-thread at all times, so dedicated CPU is the more defensible starting class when continuous encoding needs predictable compute. That distinction does not establish an uptime or smooth-streaming guarantee.

Estimate outbound transfer before going live
A continuous stream sends data out for as long as it runs. At a constant bitrate for 30 days, the approximate transfer is:
- 5 Mbps: about 1.62 decimal TB, or 1,508 GiB.
- 10 Mbps: about 3.24 decimal TB, or 3,017 GiB.
These are arithmetic estimates from bitrate multiplied by the seconds in 30 days and converted to bytes and GiB. Protocol overhead, restarts, and other outbound traffic can raise actual usage. Compare your estimate with the plan’s included transfer and monitor actual bandwidth during a sustained test.

Use the bitrate for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one figure as universal. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264 recommendations of 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; its recommended values for AV1 and H.265 differ. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate.
Configure and validate the YouTube stream
Set the encoder and YouTube ingest to compatible values, then test the complete path before leaving it unattended. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video. It recommends RTMPS to encrypt stream data in transit.
- Choose the encoding workload. Decide whether the Droplet will encode or transcode, or only forward already encoded video. Record the intended codec, resolution, FPS, bitrate, and number of simultaneous streams.
- Set video encoding. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends that the interval not exceed four seconds. For H.264, use the recommendation matching the target resolution and frame rate, such as 14 Mbps for 1080p30 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60.
- Use a YouTube stream key and supported ingest. Configure the encoder to send to YouTube over RTMPS where available. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, or logs accessible to others.
- Run a representative test. Include the real audio and moving content, not just a static screen. Check the encoder’s output and YouTube’s stream-health status, and confirm the stream remains stable under the intended settings.
- Watch the Droplet during sustained operation. Track CPU, memory, disk, and bandwidth. If encoding load causes dropped frames or resource pressure, reduce the workload or resize and repeat the test. If bandwidth approaches the included allowance, revisit the bitrate, plan, and transfer costs.
OBS notes that CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream successfully. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU work when a compatible encoder is available, but do not assume a particular DigitalOcean Droplet exposes a usable GPU encoder without verifying the specific instance and software environment.

Size iteratively, not by vCPU count alone
A plan’s vCPU count cannot by itself predict whether your encoder will hold its target settings. Start with a plan plausible for the workload, run a sustained test at the real settings, and use measurements to decide whether to change size. Look for CPU saturation, memory pressure, dropped frames, unstable output, and transfer usage; change one constraint at a time and test again. DigitalOcean’s monitoring guidance covers CPU, memory, disk, and bandwidth, while its plan-selection guidance recommends benchmarking under simulated load.
