How to Keep an Old Android Phone Powered and Connected as a Dedicated Keyboard

An old Android phone can serve as a dedicated keyboard if its app, Android version, and host are compatible. Learn how Bluetooth HID and app-specific USB differ, and how to keep the phone powered and test it before relying on it.

Yes—an old Android phone can work as a dedicated keyboard if an app supports Bluetooth HID on your phone and the computer or other host. Keep it on a compatible charger for long sessions, then test the exact screen-off and reconnection behavior you plan to rely on. If by “connected” you mean online, that is a separate setup from sending keyboard input.

Choose how the phone will send keyboard input

First check the phone’s model and Android version, along with the target computer’s operating system and Bluetooth or USB capabilities. App support and device hardware determine whether either method will work; the fact that Android supports a protocol does not mean every phone implements it.

Option What it does What to check
Bluetooth HID Sends keyboard input wirelessly to a compatible host. The app must support Bluetooth HID on your Android version, and the host must support Bluetooth. Pairing alone may not establish an active keyboard-input session.
USB through an app and helper Sends input over a cable in apps that provide a USB mode. The app may require USB debugging, a companion computer program, and a particular host operating system. USB roles and accessory support depend on the phone.
Internet tethering Shares the phone’s internet connection; it does not make the phone a keyboard. Choose Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB tethering separately, and check Android-version and operator restrictions.

Set up Bluetooth keyboard input

Check app and host compatibility

Use an app that explicitly supports Android Bluetooth HID and your intended host. For one documented example, F-Droid lists Bluke 1.0.7 as requiring Android 7.0 or newer; that requirement applies to this app version, not to every Android keyboard app. The listing says: “No installing server apps or background clients, just pair, connect and it works.” Treat that as Bluke’s product description, not a guarantee for other apps or devices. See Bluke on F-Droid.

Pair and verify actual input

  1. Install the chosen app and follow its instructions to enable its Bluetooth keyboard function.
  2. Use the host’s Bluetooth settings to find and pair the phone, following any confirmation prompts shown by either device.
  3. Open a text field on the host and type a short test. Confirm that keystrokes arrive as keyboard input; a generic “paired” or “connected” status by itself may not confirm that the HID session is active.

Use USB only when the app supports your setup

A USB keyboard route is app-specific, not a universal Android feature with one standard setup. GlassHID, for example, documents a USB mode that uses ADB forwarding, USB debugging, a cable, and a Windows helper. Its instructions describe that implementation; they do not establish that the same approach works with every Android phone, app, or computer. Check GlassHID’s documentation for its requirements before enabling debugging or relying on a USB connection.

Android’s Open Accessory (AOA) support also depends on the device’s hardware. AOSP documents HID support in AOA v2 on Android 4.1 and later, but that protocol capability is not evidence that a particular phone supports the required accessory mode. Read the AOSP accessory-mode documentation.

Keep the phone powered for long sessions

For a stationary setup, connect the phone to a charger and cable compatible with its port and charging requirements. Google recommends plugging devices in during tethering to extend battery life; it does not specify a charger or guarantee how long keyboard use will run on any phone. A USB data connection may or may not also charge the phone, depending on the device and configuration, so check the battery indicator in your actual setup. Google’s tethering instructions cover the recommendation to plug in.

Lowering screen brightness or letting the display sleep can reduce an always-on screen’s power use if the keyboard app remains responsive. Test before leaving the setup unattended: app behavior with the screen off, lock-screen behavior, app restart, host sleep and wake, and Bluetooth disconnection and reconnection can vary by app and manufacturer. Android Doze defers some background activity while a device is idle, but AOSP says Doze does not engage while a battery-powered device is plugged into a charger; neither point guarantees that a particular keyboard app will keep running. • Try the complete setup with the screen off and locked.
  • Test whether the app reconnects after the host sleeps and wakes, or Bluetooth is interrupted.
  • Change battery-optimization settings only if the app developer documents a need. Exempting an app can increase battery use.

Keep keyboard input separate from internet access

Bluetooth HID carries keyboard input; it does not itself share the phone’s internet connection. If the host also needs internet access, configure tethering separately using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB as appropriate. Google’s instructions note that tethering steps can depend on Android version, that mobile operators may limit or charge for it, and that Mac computers cannot use Android USB tethering in the cited guidance. Review Google’s tethering guidance and your operator’s terms.
