First, distinguish whether OBS stops streaming or whether its video capture freezes when you close Remote Desktop. Disconnecting an RDP viewer is not the same as signing out or restarting, and OBS’s --startstreaming option only starts the application’s stream; it does not guarantee that an RDP-dependent display or window capture survives a session change. Run a short, private test and check the stream’s actual video and audio from another device before relying on it.
What “closing Remote Desktop” can mean
Closing the RDP client window, explicitly disconnecting, signing out of Windows, and restarting the server are different actions. They can leave different session and application states. If you want OBS to keep running, do not sign out or restart as a troubleshooting shortcut. First reproduce the exact action you normally take and see what happens to OBS and to the stream.

The available Hetzner documentation does not provide a guaranteed OBS configuration for keeping a graphical capture alive after RDP disconnect. The right remedy depends on whether your server is a cloud VM or a dedicated server, how Windows and its display path are configured, and what OBS is capturing.

Make a safe test stream
- In OBS, use the intended scene, profile, sources, audio devices, and YouTube stream setup. Choose a private, unlisted, or otherwise safe test destination.
- Start streaming and confirm the picture and sound at YouTube from a separate device or browser. Do not rely only on OBS’s timer or status indicator.
- Close or disconnect the RDP viewer using the same action that causes the problem. Do not sign out or restart unless that is specifically the action you are testing.
- Watch the destination stream from the separate device. Check whether OBS remains connected, whether the picture continues to change, and whether audio continues.
- Reconnect to the server and inspect OBS and its logs. Record which source or sources failed and whether YouTube reports a disconnection.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes and describes how desktop, window, game, and video capture sources and audio-device selection work. A stream timer that continues while a captured desktop is frozen is a capture problem, not proof that the video is healthy: OBS Quick Start Guide.

Use the failure symptom to choose the next step
OBS itself stops or YouTube disconnects
Check whether Windows signed out, restarted, or ended the session; whether OBS was launched in the intended user session; and whether OBS logs show an application or connection failure. Starting OBS automatically can help with startup, but it does not keep a Windows session or a capture source alive. If YouTube disconnects while the application is running, investigate the connection path and ingest stability separately.
The stream stays live but the picture freezes or changes
Identify the source in the active OBS scene. Display, browser-window, and other desktop captures may depend on an interactive desktop and its display or graphics path. Media files and direct inputs have different dependencies, so test the actual source rather than assuming all OBS scenes behave alike. If only a browser or desktop capture fails after RDP disconnect, investigate that capture and display path; changing OBS’s startup option will not fix it.

The picture continues but frames drop
Dropped frames and intermittent disconnections point to network instability between the host and the ingest server, or to a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. That is different from a frozen desktop capture after disconnecting RDP. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance and adjust the network or streaming settings based on the measured problem: OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Automate OBS startup without mistaking it for persistence
OBS supports launch parameters including --startstreaming, --scene, --profile, and --collection. For example, a Windows shortcut or scheduled task can launch OBS with the desired profile and scene and add --startstreaming when automatic stream startup is appropriate. The OBS guide recommends setting the task’s “Start in…” directory to the folder containing obs64.exe when using scheduled tasks or other automation on Windows: OBS Launch Parameters.

These parameters select OBS configuration and start streaming; they do not ensure that OBS remains in the right interactive session, that a desktop source persists, or that the network stays connected. Configure unattended startup cautiously: an automatic start can send the wrong scene or content if the intended setup is not loaded.
Remote control and Hetzner console access
OBS WebSocket
OBS WebSocket is built into OBS Studio 28 and later and can provide external control of OBS. OBS recommends enabling authentication and setting a password. Remote control can issue commands to OBS, but it does not by itself preserve a Windows display source or prevent an RDP-related capture change: OBS Remote Control Guide.

Hetzner Cloud Console VNC
Hetzner documents a provider console for accessing a cloud server, and its FAQ describes that console as intended for emergencies while recommending SSH for routine management. The documentation does not promise that this console preserves or mirrors the Windows interactive session used by OBS. Confirm which Hetzner Windows setup you have
On a Hetzner dedicated server using its Windows Server add-on, the provider documents Windows Server 2025 access over RDP. A Windows installation on Hetzner Cloud follows a different licensing and architecture path; the Windows-on-Cloud guide says Windows installation depends on license eligibility and that Arm64 CAX servers do not support Windows Server. A community OBS forum discussion reports a browser-window capture freezing when RDP disconnects and suggests an alternate mirroring approach for a physical GPU computer. That is an individual report, not a universal Windows rule or a Hetzner-specific guarantee. It does not establish that mirroring software will solve the same issue on a cloud VM.
Choose an architecture only after the test
- If the source is a desktop or window capture, establish whether the interactive display and graphics path remain available after the specific RDP action.
- If the source is a media file or another direct input, test that source independently; do not assume a desktop-capture failure means every OBS source will fail.
- Confirm whether the host is a cloud VM or dedicated physical server and whether it has a usable display or GPU path before buying hardware or changing remote-access software.
- If the content can be delivered without desktop capture, a headless media pipeline may be an option, but validate that it supports the actual source, overlays, and YouTube ingest workflow.
