Agile testing is collaborative quality work carried out throughout software development—from clarifying an idea to checking a change and learning from user feedback. It is not a testing phase saved for the end of an iteration. Developers, testers, and product or business representatives share responsibility for building and evaluating software in short feedback loops.
What agile testing means
ISTQB’s 2026 Advanced Level Agile Tester syllabus quotes Janet Gregory and Lisa Crispin’s definition of agile testing as “collaborative testing practices that occur from inception to delivery, supporting frequent delivery of quality products that add business value for our customers.” The definition emphasizes defect prevention and whole-team responsibility for quality, rather than relying only on finding defects after implementation. ISTQB, Certified Tester Advanced Level Agile Tester syllabus v2.0, released April 17, 2026.

In practice, the team discusses what users need, makes expectations concrete, checks work as it changes, and uses results to decide what to improve or deliver next. Agile does not prescribe one testing method. Teams choose practices to suit their framework, product risks, and need for feedback.

How testing fits into an iteration
Before implementation: clarify and assess risk
Product and business representatives, developers, and testers discuss user stories, examples, and acceptance criteria. They identify assumptions, agree what observable behavior would meet the need, and consider quality risks early. This helps expose ambiguity while it is still relatively inexpensive to address.

During implementation: check changes and learn
Developers and testers work together on checks at suitable levels. Test-driven development (TDD) uses tests written before or alongside implementation to guide code. Acceptance test-driven development (ATDD) and behavior-driven development (BDD) examples can make business expectations more concrete. Continuous integration runs selected automated checks as changes are integrated, providing timely feedback.
Exploratory testing adds human investigation: a tester follows questions, observes behavior, and probes uncertain or unexpected areas that scripted checks may not cover. Automation and exploratory work answer different questions; one does not make the other unnecessary.

Before and after delivery: evaluate and adapt
At the end of an iteration, the team checks relevant acceptance criteria, the Definition of Done, and regression risks. It also considers non-functional qualities such as performance, usability, and security. Integration, system, or end-to-end tests may be appropriate for important workflows, but broad end-to-end checks can be slower, harder to diagnose, and more costly to maintain. Select them deliberately according to risk.

After delivery, feedback and defects inform future work. The Agile Manifesto principles call for early and continuous delivery, frequent working software, collaboration between business people and developers, technical excellence, sustainable development, and regular reflection. Who is responsible for quality?
- Developers design and implement changes and verify them with suitable unit, component, and integration checks.
- Testers and quality specialists help assess risks, shape test approaches, clarify requirements, conduct exploratory testing, and improve useful automation.
- Product and business representatives explain user needs and help define examples and acceptance criteria the team can evaluate.
- The whole team owns product quality, communicates what has been checked and what remains uncertain, and makes release decisions with that evidence in view.
A specialist tester contributes valuable perspective, but their presence does not transfer quality responsibility away from developers or the rest of the team. Team structures vary; the collaborative work matters more than whether a particular job title exists.
Choosing practices for the question at hand
| Practice or focus | What it helps answer | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Unit and component checks; TDD | Does code behave as expected close to where it is implemented? | These checks alone do not establish that an integrated user workflow meets expectations. |
| Acceptance criteria, ATDD, and BDD examples | Does observable behavior match stakeholder intent? | Examples require shared understanding and maintenance as needs change. |
| Continuous integration and regression automation | Did an integrated change break behavior the team already relies on? | Choose automation for useful feedback, not for a high raw test count. |
| Exploratory and usability testing | What happens in uncertain, interactive, or unexpected situations? | It needs skilled attention and a clear purpose; it complements repeatable checks. |
| Performance, security, reliability, and other non-functional testing | Does the product meet quality needs beyond feature behavior? | Timing and depth should reflect risk, release context, and available environments. |
| System and end-to-end checks | Does a selected workflow work across integrated components or services? | Broad tests may be slower, harder to diagnose, and costly to maintain. |
Rather than choosing between “manual” and “automated” testing, consider feedback speed, risk coverage, diagnostic value, maintenance effort, and how directly a practice checks stakeholder intent.

Using browser screenshots as one testing aid
When a web interface needs a visual check, a screenshot can preserve how a page appeared at a particular viewport or state. It is evidence for visual review, not a substitute for checks of behavior, accessibility, security, or performance. A team can capture pages in its own browser automation setup, then compare results with its visual-review process. Cookie banners, popups, dynamic content, and timing can affect what appears in a capture, so make the page state and capture conditions clear when interpreting it.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP; replace the URL with a page you are authorized to test and supply your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
