A Windows restart stops OBS and interrupts its YouTube stream. Before going live, check for a pending restart, set Windows active hours to cover the broadcast, and schedule updates or restarts for afterward. For a one-off event, temporarily pause updates. OBS’s automatic reconnect can help with some connection drops, but it cannot keep streaming while the PC reboots.
Prevent Windows from restarting during your stream
Use Windows’ update controls to reduce the risk of an automatic restart during a broadcast. These settings help manage timing; they do not permanently block updates or override every device policy.

- Check for a pending restart before the broadcast. Open Settings → Windows Update. If Windows says a restart is required, schedule it for after the stream rather than starting a broadcast with that restart pending.
- Set active hours for the full expected stream. In Windows 11, go to Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Active hours and choose hours that cover the broadcast. Active hours tell Windows when the device is expected to be in use, so automatic post-update restarts are generally scheduled outside that period. Microsoft documents 8 AM–5 PM as the default active-hours period on PCs; users can change it. Later Windows versions support a maximum range of 18 hours.
- For a high-stakes, one-time event, consider Pause updates. Use the pause control in Windows Update settings to postpone updates that could require a restart, then resume updates and install them after the event. Microsoft currently documents pauses of up to 35 days; this is a maximum, not a recommendation to defer security updates that long.
- After the show, install updates and restart when convenient. Active hours are not a permanent block, and a pause expires. Windows-managed devices, administrator policies, update deadlines, and version-specific behavior can affect restart timing. If the PC is managed by an organization, ask its administrator before changing policy or registry settings.
Microsoft says ordinary Windows update settings cannot stop updates entirely. Use these controls to plan around a broadcast, then keep the system updated.
What OBS Automatic Reconnect can—and cannot—do
OBS automatic reconnect is for supported output disconnections while OBS is still running. To check it, open OBS → Settings → Advanced → Automatically Reconnect; labels may vary by OBS release. Set a retry delay and retry limit suited to your connection. OBS describes retry count and timing in its connection troubleshooting guidance.

A Windows reboot is different: it stops the OBS process, so OBS cannot send frames or retry during startup. Reconnect is not protection from a restart. For connection trouble that does not involve a reboot, check OBS dropped frames, bitrate, network stability, and the route to the ingest server.
If the PC has already restarted
- After Windows starts, open OBS and check whether the encoder is streaming. Start streaming again if necessary.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and confirm whether YouTube is receiving encoder data and whether the broadcast is live or awaiting a go-live action.
- Check the scheduled stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube can start or stop a broadcast in response to encoder actions when those options are enabled, but do not assume a restarted encoder will automatically resume the same event.
- Review stream health messages and verify the video and audio. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; its encoder setup guide explains the server URL and stream key workflow. Prior settings can load again for returning streamers.
- After the broadcast, check the live archive and confirm what viewers can replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but an interruption does not guarantee that all segments will be joined seamlessly.
Keep Windows 10 advice in context
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date.
