To keep an Nginx RTMP stream running after a crash or reboot, use systemd to manage the process that actually publishes or relays the stream. That may be Nginx itself, or a separate FFmpeg process. First identify which process owns the YouTube connection; then validate the Nginx configuration, apply the appropriate unit and restart policy, enable the unit at boot if needed, and verify the result in both systemd logs and YouTube Live Control Room. A service showing as active does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
First identify which process publishes the stream
Systemd supervises Linux processes; the Nginx RTMP configuration defines what Nginx does with media. Your service choice depends on how those roles are arranged. NGINX documents the RTMP module for streaming formats including RTMP, HLS, and DASH, while the nginx-rtmp-module project documents an exec feature that can launch FFmpeg. Not every deployment uses FFmpeg, and an Nginx service unit should not automatically be treated as an independent supervisor for every child process it starts.

| Arrangement | What to manage | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|
| Nginx RTMP handles the configured publishing or relay behavior | The platform’s Nginx service unit | Keep the RTMP push configuration with Nginx and use the distribution’s supported service commands. A configuration change may require an Nginx reload. |
| A separate FFmpeg or other encoder process publishes to YouTube | A dedicated unit for that publisher | The unit makes its executable, user, restart policy, logs, and boot behavior explicit. |
Nginx RTMP launches FFmpeg with exec |
Determine which service owns the child process before adding another supervisor | Clarify how the child is stopped and restarted when Nginx stops or reloads. Avoid competing lifecycle managers. |
There is no universally correct topology: it depends on the installed Nginx build and how the publisher is launched. The module project documents the ability to invoke FFmpeg, but that alone does not establish how a particular deployment’s service manager handles the child process. See the nginx-rtmp-module project documentation.

In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the event and confirm they match the values configured in your publisher. Treat the key as a credential: do not put it in public logs, screenshots, or shared unit files. YouTube’s encoder setup explains the URL/key workflow and says that for a scheduled stream you should wait for the preview and click Go live. Sending media from the encoder and starting or continuing a YouTube event are related, but not interchangeable. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

YouTube supports RTMPS, describing it as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room only if the exact Nginx RTMP build and configuration can publish to that protocol; YouTube support for RTMPS does not prove that an installed Nginx build can. YouTube’s troubleshooting advises checking the protocol/server URL and mentions explicitly trying port 443 for relevant SSL errors. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and the Nginx RTMP module documentation.
Validate Nginx before managing or restarting it
- Check the configuration syntax: run
sudo nginx -t. Fix any reported file, directive, or module error before applying the configuration. - Apply a valid change: NGINX documents
nginx -s reload. On a systemd-managed installation, use the distribution’s supported Nginx service reload command if that is its convention; service names and packaging differ across systems. - Confirm the intended publisher is running: inspect the Nginx service if Nginx owns publishing, or the dedicated publisher unit if a separate process owns it. Do not assume reloading Nginx restarted an independently managed encoder.
- Check the YouTube preview: verify that the expected media reaches Live Control Room. A successful syntax test only validates Nginx configuration, not the upstream stream.
For module installation, loading, configuration syntax checks, and reload behavior, consult the NGINX documentation. RTMP module availability and installation steps depend on the operating system, package, and NGINX edition.

Use a dedicated systemd unit for an independent publisher
If FFmpeg or another publisher runs independently of Nginx, a dedicated unit can give it an explicit lifecycle. This illustrative fragment is not a tested, copy-ready configuration: adapt the executable, arguments, paths, user, and service name to your installation.

Adapt the unit rather than copying it blindly
- Replace
/usr/bin/ffmpeg ...with the actual executable and complete publishing arguments. Confirm the stream URL and key are correct and handle the key as a secret. - Set
User=to an account that exists and has the required access to inputs, configuration, and logs. After=network-online.targetandWants=network-online.targetexpress boot ordering and a dependency request. They do not prove that DNS, routing, credentials, or YouTube ingest will remain available.Restart=on-failureis a common starting point for a long-running service. systemd’s documentation recommends failure-based restart policies for long-running services, but check the installed systemd version and your process’s exit behavior. A restart policy cannot correct invalid configuration or guarantee an upstream reconnect.RestartSec=5is an example policy choice, not a universal or evidence-based retry interval. Choose and test a delay suitable for the deployment.
For a process launched by Nginx’s RTMP exec directive, decide whether Nginx or a separate unit owns that process before creating this unit. Two supervisors can create unclear shutdown and restart behavior if neither has a defined ownership model.

Enable the chosen unit at boot and start it now
Enabling a unit and starting it are separate systemd operations: enablement arranges activation through the configured boot or dependency targets; starting launches the service now. Substitute the actual service name on your distribution.
- Validate the unit: use the systemd unit verification tools available on the installed system, and correct syntax or path errors before starting.
- Start it now: run
sudo systemctl start UNIT, replacingUNITwith the actual unit name, such as your publisher’s.servicename. - Enable it for boot: run
sudo systemctl enable UNIT. If you want to start it now and enable it for boot in one operation, usesudo systemctl enable --now UNIT. - Inspect the state: run
sudo systemctl status UNIT. Confirm the expected process is running, but do not use the active state alone as evidence that YouTube is receiving media. - Review the journal: run
sudo journalctl -u UNITto inspect the unit’s logs. Add--since "30 minutes ago"when you need to narrow the output to a recent incident.
For the exact options supported by your system, see the systemctl manual and journalctl manual. Unit names and service-management conventions can differ by distribution.

Test recovery without mistaking it for stream continuity
During a maintenance window, deliberately test a recoverable process failure and observe the configured unit’s status and journal. Then check whether YouTube receives media again and whether the intended event is still live. A process that restarts is only one layer of recovery: the publisher must reconnect, YouTube must accept the stream, and the event must be in a state that can continue. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers stream setup and scheduled-event preview/Go live behavior, but does not establish that every disconnect will resume the same event without operator action. Confirm the behavior for your account, event, encoder, and current YouTube interface.
systemd can restart a process that exits according to its configured policy. It does not, by itself, detect every still-running but stuck publisher or prove that valid media is being produced. A watchdog or separate health check requires its own suitable setup; there is no universal Nginx RTMP watchdog configuration established here. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is YouTube’s published behavior, not a systemd limit or a guarantee of unlimited live-event duration. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Troubleshoot by finding the failed layer
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Nginx will not start or reload | Nginx configuration, module loading, or service setup | Run sudo nginx -t, read its error output, and inspect the Nginx service status and journal. Confirm that the RTMP module is available in the installed package/build. |
| The publisher exits and systemd does not restart it | Unit name, unit configuration, or exit semantics | Check systemctl status UNIT and journalctl -u UNIT; confirm the configured restart policy matches the process’s exit result and the unit was reloaded after edits if required by the distribution. |
| The service is active, but YouTube preview is blank or missing | Publisher arguments, stream URL/key, protocol, or media output | Review publisher and Nginx logs, verify the destination and key in Live Control Room, and confirm the expected preview appears. |
| Connection fails with an SSL or RTMPS error | Protocol/server URL, port, or build support | Use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room only when the installed publisher supports it; follow YouTube’s guidance to verify the server/protocol and try port 443 for relevant SSL errors. |
| The publisher keeps retrying after a network interruption | Network, DNS, remote ingest, or credential availability | Inspect logs and connectivity, then confirm whether the publisher reconnects and whether YouTube accepts the resumed stream. Boot ordering does not guarantee continuing network or ingest availability. |
| Process returns after a restart, but the event does not continue | YouTube event state and end-to-end reconnect behavior | Check Live Control Room and the event’s current state; be prepared to take the required action there. A systemd restart alone cannot guarantee continuation of the same live event. |
