Run FFmpeg as a systemd service on the Azure Linux VM, enable that service to start at boot, and configure its restart behavior for the failure cases you expect. Then verify each layer separately: FFmpeg process, media input, Azure network path, YouTube ingest settings, and logs. A service showing “active” means FFmpeg is running; it does not prove YouTube has accepted or displayed the stream.
1. Confirm the source, output, and YouTube ingest settings
Start with the media source and the channel’s current YouTube Live configuration. A local file, live capture device, and network input require different FFmpeg input options, so there is no universal command or encoding profile for every stream.

FFmpeg’s command structure is ffmpeg [global_options] {[input_file_options] -i input_url} ... {[output_file_options] output_url} .... Its command-line options depend on the FFmpeg version and build. The protocol documentation includes a generic example that uses -re to publish a file to an RTMP URL, but that example is not a tested YouTube command or a recommendation to use the same options for every source. Prefer the configured RTMPS endpoint where supported
Copy the ingest address and stream key from the channel’s current live-stream setup; do not rely on a generic host or key from an old example. YouTube documents RTMPS as RTMP over SSL, using port 443. Its RTMPS guide says: “Connections must be made to port 443, and the server hostname is required for authentication via the SNI extension in the SSL handshake.” Preserve the hostname and use the endpoint format supplied by YouTube; do not replace rtmps:// with cleartext rtmp:// or remove the hostname. Do not guess encoding settings
Whether to copy streams or transcode depends on the input’s codecs and the output you need. The available evidence does not establish a YouTube-specific bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, or codec setting for your source. Verify the channel’s current guidance and inspect the actual media before choosing those options; avoid dropping a generic profile into a production command.
2. Prepare the Azure VM and test FFmpeg interactively
Before creating a service, confirm that the input is accessible from the VM and that the FFmpeg command works when run manually under the account that will own the service. Use an absolute path to the FFmpeg executable, an explicit working directory appropriate to the media source, and a dedicated unprivileged Linux account where practical.

- Check the host network: use
networkctlto inspect interface state,ip addrfor addresses, andip routefor routes. Azure Linux uses systemd-networkd for networking. Do not stop that service over SSH as a casual troubleshooting step: doing so can disconnect the VM and leave serial console as the recovery route. - Check the destination path: confirm DNS, routing, VM-level firewall rules, and Azure network policy allow outbound traffic to the selected YouTube endpoint on port 443. The route and policy are deployment-specific; success on another VM does not establish that this VM can reach the ingest endpoint.
- Run the real command manually: use the intended source, endpoint, and configuration, then watch FFmpeg’s standard error for input, codec, connection, or authentication failures. Do not publish the stream key in a command transcript or shared terminal output.

A systemd service runs FFmpeg independently of an interactive SSH session and can be enabled to start when the VM boots. The exact unit directives, environment-file behavior, and restart semantics must be checked against the distribution and systemd version installed on your VM. Use the local systemd.service and systemd.exec man pages, and validate a unit with systemd-analyze verify before enabling it.

Build the unit around your tested command rather than copying an unverified template. It needs an explicit executable and arguments, the right account and working directory, a deliberate way to provide protected configuration, and a restart policy chosen for the failure modes you expect. Shell interpolation is not automatic in every unit setting, and an environment file has parsing rules of its own; verify both locally rather than assuming a shell script’s behavior applies.
Choose restart behavior deliberately
Decide whether the service should restart only after an abnormal exit or under broader circumstances, and verify the exact behavior in the installed systemd documentation. A restart policy can recover from a process crash, but it cannot correct an invalid command, missing media, expired key, or blocked route. Repeated restarts can conceal a persistent error. If you use a delay between attempts, confirm the applicable directive and syntax for the installed version, then test what happens after both an unexpected failure and an intentional stop.

Enable, start, and verify the unit
- After writing the unit, run
systemd-analyze verifywith the unit file’s path and fix any reported errors. - Reload systemd’s unit configuration with
systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service to run at boot and start it now using
systemctl enable --now <service>, replacing<service>with the unit name, such asffmpeg-stream.service. - Check
systemctl status <service>and inspect the service log. Then verify the incoming stream in YouTube’s live interface; an active systemd unit alone is not proof of successful ingest. - Test the intended recovery behavior in a controlled way, and separately confirm that a VM reboot brings the service back as expected.
The commands describe the workflow, not a claim that a particular restart directive or unit template is valid on every distribution. Validate the unit against your VM’s installed systemd version before relying on it.
4. Protect the stream key
Treat the YouTube stream key as a publishing credential. Keep it out of public repositories, screenshots, shell history, world-readable files, and logs or process output that other users can inspect. Use a restricted configuration mechanism supported by the installed systemd version, set file permissions so only the necessary account can read the secret, and rotate the key if it is exposed. These are prudent operational safeguards; the cited YouTube RTMPS documentation establishes the need for stream configuration, not a specific key-storage policy.

5. Diagnose a stream that stops or does not appear
Work from the emitting process outward. A running process, a reachable ingest endpoint, and a visible live stream are separate conditions. Azure Linux documents systemctl status, journalctl, and standard host tools for inspecting the service and machine.

Keep logs available after a reboot
On Azure Linux, journal data persists under /var/log/journal/ when that directory exists. Without it, journal data is held in memory and is lost at reboot. If you need to diagnose failures that occurred before a restart, establish persistent journaling deliberately and set retention to suit the VM’s storage and operational needs. Follow service output with journalctl -f; Azure Linux’s journal documentation explains the persistence condition and the standard commands: Azure Linux systemd-journald documentation.
