What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The right connection depends on your microphone’s output: plug a USB mic directly into a PC; connect an XLR mic to a PC through an audio interface with an XLR microphone input; or connect an XLR mic to a mixer’s microphone input. Then select the correct input in your app, set gain while monitoring the signal, and enable phantom power only if the microphone’s manual says it needs it.
Choose the connection that matches your microphone
| Connection path | What you need | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| USB microphone → PC | A USB microphone and compatible computer port or cable | A direct, simple computer connection |
| XLR microphone → audio interface → PC | A balanced XLR microphone cable, an interface with an XLR mic input, and a computer connection | Recording an XLR microphone on a computer, with interface-based gain and monitoring |
| XLR microphone → mixer | A balanced XLR microphone cable and a mixer mic input | Connecting to a mixer; the route from that mixer to a PC depends on its model and outputs |
A USB microphone can connect directly to a computer; Shure documents this for its MV7. For an XLR microphone, Shure recommends an audio interface with an XLR microphone input to get the signal into a computer. A professional XLR microphone connected directly to a computer’s sound-card mic input may sound very quiet because that input can expect a hotter signal.

Some microphones offer both USB and XLR outputs. For example, Shure documents the MV7 for USB-to-computer use and for balanced XLR connection to a mixer or stage box. Follow the instructions for your particular model rather than assuming all microphones with similar connectors work the same way.
Connect a USB microphone to a PC
- Check the microphone’s manual for its USB connection and any device-specific setup requirements.
- Connect the microphone to a suitable computer port using its USB cable or the cable specified by the manufacturer.
- In your recording, meeting, or other audio application, select the microphone as the input device. The exact menu and operating-system steps vary by computer and application.
- Speak or perform at a normal level and check the application’s input meter. Adjust the mic or software level if needed, keeping the signal clear and avoiding clipping.
Connect an XLR microphone to a PC through an audio interface
- Confirm that the interface has an XLR microphone input. Check the interface manual for its connection and computer compatibility.
- With the equipment set up according to its manuals, connect the microphone’s XLR output to the interface’s XLR mic input using a balanced XLR microphone cable.
- Connect the interface to the computer using the connection specified for that interface. In Focusrite’s Scarlett Solo example, the interface connects to the computer over USB.
- Check the microphone manual to determine whether phantom power is required. Enable it on the interface only when appropriate for that microphone.
- In your recording application, select the interface or its microphone input. If the interface has more than one input, choose the channel the microphone is connected to.
- Speak or perform while raising the interface’s preamp gain. Watch its meter or signal indicators and avoid letting the signal clip. Exact target levels depend on the recording workflow; the cited setup guidance does not prescribe one universal target.
Use the connector labeled for a microphone input. On the cited Focusrite interface, XLR connections are for microphones, while 1/4-inch jack connections serve line or instrument inputs. Focusrite warns that putting line-level equipment into an XLR mic input can overload the preamp; enabling phantom power in that misuse case may damage equipment. Check your own interface’s labels and manual before connecting other audio gear.

Connect an XLR microphone to a mixer
- Find a mixer input labeled for a microphone, not a line-level input.
- Connect the microphone to that input with a balanced XLR microphone cable.
- Check the microphone’s manual before switching on phantom power at the mixer. The mixer provides phantom power when needed, but requirements differ by microphone.
- Set the mixer’s input gain while speaking or performing and monitor its signal indicators to avoid clipping.
- If you also need the microphone signal on a PC, consult the mixer’s documentation for its specific computer connection and output routing. Mixer outputs and PC routes vary by model, so do not assume a particular cable or output will work for every mixer.
Check phantom power before turning it on
Phantom power is not a universal setting to enable for every XLR microphone. Shure’s PGA27 guide states that condenser microphones require phantom power and says the PGA27 performs best at 48 V. Shure’s MV7 guide says phantom power is not required for the MV7’s XLR connection. These are model-specific instructions, not a reason to apply one microphone’s requirement to another. Read the manual for the microphone and follow the interface or mixer instructions.
Troubleshoot a microphone with no signal or poor level
- No signal: Check that the cable is fully connected and appropriate for the microphone and input. Confirm that the microphone is plugged into the intended channel and that your application has selected the correct input.
- XLR microphone is very quiet on the PC: A computer sound-card mic input may expect a hotter signal than a professional microphone supplies. Use an audio interface with an XLR mic input, or a microphone with a built-in USB connection.
- Signal is too loud or distorted: Reduce the hardware preamp gain and check that the source is connected to the right type of input. A line-level source in an XLR mic input can overload the preamp.
- Unsure about phantom power: Check the exact microphone manual before changing the setting. Requirements differ between models; do not infer them from the microphone’s connector alone.
- Microphone works in one app but not another: Check the input-device selection in the app that has no signal. Device and menu labels vary by application and operating system.
- Mixer output does not reach the PC: Consult the mixer manual for its actual computer connection and routing. The appropriate output path cannot be determined from the XLR microphone connection alone.
What to check when choosing an interface or mixer
- For an XLR mic and PC, verify that the interface has an XLR microphone input and a computer connection compatible with your setup.
- If using multiple microphones, check the number of mic inputs and preamps you need.
- Check whether phantom power is available if your microphone requires it.
- For a mixer-to-PC setup, confirm the mixer’s actual computer output or other intended routing before buying or connecting equipment.
- Match the cable ends and length to your microphone and equipment. For an XLR microphone connection, use balanced XLR mic cabling.
The manufacturer documentation cited here establishes these connection types, but does not establish current product prices or a performance ranking among interfaces and mixers. Compare specific models against the inputs, power, monitoring, and computer connections your setup requires.
