Run FFmpeg in the foreground as a systemd service and set Restart=on-failure to have Ubuntu relaunch it after an observed process failure. That can recover from FFmpeg exiting; it does not by itself reconnect every input protocol or prove that viewers are receiving a healthy stream. The right setup depends on your source, destination, and installed versions, so treat the unit below as a template—not a tested, guaranteed-uptime configuration.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
There are two distinct failure points: FFmpeg may lose a connection to its input, or its process may exit. FFmpeg offers protocol-specific reconnect options for some input failures. systemd can restart the process when it exits abnormally or otherwise meets its restart conditions. Neither mechanism alone guarantees that useful frames are reaching the destination.

| Recovery method | What it can address | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg protocol reconnect | Some connection failures supported by the input protocol and configured retry options. | Options and behavior depend on the protocol and build; reconnecting an input does not necessarily detect a downstream publishing failure. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation. |
systemd Restart=on-failure |
An observed process failure, such as abnormal termination, or an applicable timeout. | A process that remains alive but is stalled may not trigger a restart. Repeated launches can also hit systemd start-rate limits. See the Ubuntu Jammy systemd.service manual. |
| Network startup ordering | Orders service startup after the network manager’s configured online condition. | Does not continuously monitor or restore connectivity. See systemd’s network-online documentation. |
| Health check or watchdog design | May detect a process that is running but not doing useful work, if the check has a meaningful health signal. | You must define the signal and recovery action for your source and destination; no universal health check is supplied here. |
Check your Ubuntu and FFmpeg versions first
Before copying version-sensitive options, check the installed tools and the local help for the protocol you use:
ffmpeg -versionsystemd --version- Consult the local FFmpeg help and documentation for your input and output protocols.
FFmpeg’s online documentation is generated for its newest revision, so options may differ from an installed build. The cited Ubuntu Jammy service manual represents the systemd 249 series; another Ubuntu release may have different documentation or behavior.

Create a foreground systemd service
Keep FFmpeg as the service’s main foreground process so systemd can observe its exit status. Do not add a shell wrapper that backgrounds FFmpeg. The following is schematic: replace the square-bracket placeholders, use the correct binary path and account on your host, and place each FFmpeg option before the input or output it applies to.
# /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-livestream.service
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg livestream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [options appropriate to this source and destination] -i [INPUT] [OUTPUT_OPTIONS] [OUTPUT]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
- Replace
streamerwith a restricted service account that can read the source and run FFmpeg. - Replace every bracketed placeholder with valid values. Do not leave square brackets in the live command.
- Keep credentials and RTMP/RTMPS stream keys out of examples, shell history, and broadly readable files. Do not put real secrets in a published unit.
RestartSec=5sis an illustrative delay, not a validated setting for every workload. Choose a deliberate delay to avoid an unnecessarily tight restart loop.network-online.targetaffects startup ordering only. It does not keep the connection online after service startup.
FFmpeg’s command-line options generally apply to the next input or output, so their order matters. For example, -stream_loop -1 is an input option for infinitely repeating a finite local media file; it is not a reconnect option for a live camera or network source. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
This unit is a pattern, not a configuration verified on your particular host. Confirm the executable path, account permissions, input and output syntax, and local behavior before relying on unattended operation.
Load, start, and inspect the service
- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-livestream.service. - Ask systemd to reload unit files:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-livestream.service. - Check its current state:
systemctl status ffmpeg-livestream.service. - Follow recent service output:
journalctl -u ffmpeg-livestream.service -f.
Configure recovery for the actual failure
If the input connection drops
Check whether the input protocol supports reconnect options and configure only the options documented for that protocol and installed FFmpeg build. FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes options for reconnecting on disconnect, end-of-file, and network errors, as well as retry counts and delay limits. Those HTTP options should not be assumed to work for RTSP or another protocol.

For RTSP, FFmpeg documents UDP, TCP interleaving, and HTTP/HTTPS tunneling transport choices. Select a transport based on compatibility with the actual source and network, and test it locally; no one transport is right for every installation.
If FFmpeg exits
For long-running services, the Ubuntu Jammy systemd.service manual calls Restart=on-failure the recommended choice “in order to increase reliability by attempting automatic recovery from errors.” Set RestartSec= deliberately rather than allowing a rapid repeated launch loop.
If repeated restarts stop
systemd applies start-rate limiting through settings such as StartLimitIntervalSec= and StartLimitBurst=. If launches exceed the configured limit, automatic attempts stop until the limit allows another start or an administrator intervenes. Check the service status and logs to identify the reason for the repeated failures; do not assume the restart policy will keep retrying indefinitely.

Restart=on-failure may have nothing to act on if FFmpeg remains alive while no useful frames reach the destination. A health-check or watchdog design needs a meaningful signal for this specific stream and an action that causes recovery when that signal fails. A process being “active” is not proof that the viewer-facing stream is healthy.

Kids’ livestream considerations
“Kids’ livestream” describes the intended audience, not the ingest method. The title alone does not establish whether the source is a file, camera, or network feed, or which platform, codec, stream key, or moderation arrangement you use. Check the receiving platform’s current ingest instructions, and review its applicable rules for your content and location; requirements can vary by platform and jurisdiction.
Keep source credentials and destination stream keys private. Use a restricted service account, and validate any additional systemd hardening against FFmpeg’s actual device, file, and network access needs rather than copying a generic sandbox configuration.
