To keep AI voice conversations more private, check several controls separately: microphone access, audio and transcript retention, chat or activity history, model-improvement settings, human review, and deletion. No single “privacy” switch necessarily covers all of them. A spoken prompt is still information you send to a service, and the rules can vary by product, account, plan, workspace, region, and device.
What “private” means for an AI voice conversation
A voice assistant can handle multiple kinds of information during one exchange. The microphone captures sound; the service may receive audio or a transcript; the app may keep a chat or activity record; settings may permit some content to improve models; and certain data may be eligible for human review. Deleting one item does not necessarily delete the others.

- Microphone capture: whether your phone, computer, speaker, or headset is listening or activated, including an accidental activation.
- Audio transmission and storage: whether audio is sent to the provider and whether a recording is retained after the request is processed.
- Transcript and history: whether recognized words, responses, or related activity remain in the app or account after audio is gone.
- Model improvement: whether a setting permits new conversations, recordings, or other content to be used to improve a service.
- Human review: whether employees or contractors may inspect particular categories of content, such as submitted feedback, saved recordings, or query text.
- Deletion: which control removes which category, when removal occurs, and whether exceptions apply.
These are different questions, so check their controls individually. The vendor documents described below state each company’s practices and available controls; they are not independent audits or a guarantee that every account or device behaves identically.

The services use different definitions and control layouts, so the table is not a like-for-like test. In particular, consumer Gemini settings should not be confused with Google’s developer API rules: Google’s Gemini Developer API documentation says Live API conversation state can be retained for up to 24 hours if a session handle is generated. That is developer guidance, not a consumer Gemini retention promise. File API uploads and cached context have separate storage behavior.
Set privacy controls before you speak
Do this before a sensitive conversation, not just after it. Exact labels can change, and some controls may be unavailable or managed by an organization.

- Identify the account and device. Confirm which assistant is handling the conversation and whether you are signed into a personal, work, or school account. For a managed account, check the organization’s administrator and workspace retention/access terms; consumer instructions may not apply.
- Open the assistant’s privacy or data controls. For ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls. For Gemini Apps, inspect Gemini Apps Activity and the separate controls for audio/video improvement and memory/personalization. For Alexa, use the Alexa app’s privacy or voice-history controls. For Google Assistant, inspect Web & App Activity and My Activity. Where an exact in-app path can vary, use the current privacy/settings labels shown for your account rather than assuming a path from another device.
- Check history and activity. Decide whether you want chats or activity retained for later access. Turning off an activity or history control does not necessarily disable model improvement, audio/video use, memory, or other associated services.
- Check improvement and sharing separately. Look for model-improvement, training, feedback, and audio/video sharing options. A general training opt-out may not cover content submitted as feedback or a separate media-sharing choice.
- Review memory and personalization. If the assistant stores remembered details or personalizes responses, inspect those entries and controls independently from chat history.
- Set auto-delete if available. Choose an interval you are comfortable with, then note which category it covers. Auto-delete for activity is not automatically an auto-delete rule for every audio recording, transcript, chat, or saved memory.
- Use physical mute when voice input is not needed. A compatible device’s hardware mute switch or headset mute can reduce the chance of capturing a new utterance. It cannot retract information already sent to a service or govern provider-side retention.
Before speaking, leave out passwords, account numbers, confidential work, and any detail you would not want transmitted to the service. A voice prompt is not private merely because you speak it rather than type it.

What to check in ChatGPT Voice
Separate model improvement from chat deletion
Open Settings → Data controls and review “Improve the model for everyone.” OpenAI says turning it off prevents new conversations from being used to train its models, but saved chats remain in chat history. Deleting a chat is a separate action. If you submit feedback, OpenAI says the entire associated conversation may be used to train models even after you have opted out, so avoid sending feedback on a conversation that contains material you do not want used that way.

Understand the difference between audio and the conversation
OpenAI says Standard Voice audio is transcribed before a response and deleted after transcription unless you chose to share audio for training. The resulting conversation can still remain in chat history. If you delete the chat, OpenAI says associated audio/video is also deleted within 30 days, subject to security, safety, legal, and previously disassociated training-data exceptions. If audio/video sharing is enabled, OpenAI says teams may review shared clips to improve model behavior.
Archiving is not deletion. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Voice Help page says: “Archiving only removes the chat from your sidebar; it does not delete the chat or its associated audio or video clips.” Use the delete action if you want to remove a conversation rather than merely hide it.

What to check in Gemini Apps and Gemini Live
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice says Gemini may collect spoken prompts, Live audio and video, screen shares and transcripts, shared files, information from connected apps, browsers and devices, feedback, and generated content. Treat a Live session as more than a microphone-only exchange if you share a screen, video, file, or connected-app context.
Review the three separate control areas
- Gemini Apps Activity: review and delete activity, and adjust auto-delete controls.
- Audio/video improvement: manage whether Google uses audio and Gemini Live video or screen shares to improve services. Turning this improvement control off does not mean future audio/video is not used to answer you or help make Gemini safe.
- Memory and personalization: manage remembered information separately. Turning off Keep Activity does not switch off every separate service or setting.
Google’s notice warns that a device may activate unintentionally after a sound resembling “Hey Google.” It says an audio recording may begin a few seconds before activation, and accidental activations may be treated as normal activations; depending on settings, those inputs may be used to improve services. Use the device’s microphone mute when you do not need voice input, and check activity for items you do not recognize.
If other people are visible or audible in a Live conversation, Google’s notice states: “Get permission before recording people in a Live chat, or using their faces or voices in Gemini.” This is Google’s instruction in its privacy notice, not legal advice.
What to check in Alexa and Google Assistant
Alexa: distinguish a voice recording from its transcript
Amazon’s Alexa privacy guidance describes a choice not to save voice recordings, along with controls to review or delete recordings and set automatic deletion. Under the no-save choice, Amazon says the recording is deleted after Alexa processes the request, but transcripts remain reviewable for 30 days before automatic deletion begins. Therefore, “don’t save recordings” does not mean that no related text is available in the account during that period. Amazon also describes voice commands including “Alexa, delete everything I’ve said.” Use the app’s controls to review what categories are covered rather than treating a voice command as a substitute for checking the account.
Google Assistant: audio storage and text review are different
Google says Assistant sends audio to its servers after activation to fulfill the request and may include a few seconds before the activation. It says audio recordings are not saved on servers by default; the related setting is under Web & App Activity, called “Include voice and audio activity.” The same Google Safety Center guidance separately says human reviewers, including third parties, may read, annotate, and process query text and related information, and that portions of saved audio may be reviewed. Use My Activity to review or delete activity and set auto-delete; do not assume that a choice about audio recordings also erases query text.
Delete existing voice data carefully
Start by identifying the category you want removed. A single “delete” control may not cover everything associated with a conversation.
- Find the relevant history or activity. Look in the assistant’s chat list, activity page, voice-history page, or saved-memory area, depending on the product.
- Delete the item rather than archive or hide it. In ChatGPT, archiving only removes the chat from the sidebar; it does not delete the chat or associated clips. Use the delete action for removal.
- Check for separate audio, transcript, and memory controls. Review the service’s privacy controls for recordings, recognized text, saved activity, or personalization. Delete each category where a separate control exists.
- Confirm any delay or exception. OpenAI says deleting a ChatGPT chat and associated audio/video normally occurs within 30 days, subject to its stated security, safety, legal, and previously disassociated training-data exceptions. Amazon says Alexa transcripts remain reviewable for 30 days under its no-save-recordings choice before automatic deletion begins.
- Review auto-delete going forward. If the service offers it, set an interval and verify the setting applies to the data type you care about. Auto-delete is not a substitute for deleting older items when immediate removal is your goal.
Vendor language about deletion describes stated policy, not independent verification of every backup, device cache, or legal exception. Check the current notice for the account and region you actually use.

Common privacy assumptions that lead to surprises
- “I turned off training, so the conversation is gone.” No. On ChatGPT, OpenAI says the model-improvement opt-out leaves saved chats in history; delete the chat separately.

- “A microphone cover makes cloud voice private.” A cover does not change microphone state or provider retention. Use a compatible hardware mute to reduce new capture, and manage already-transmitted information in the service account.
- “Consumer app settings apply to APIs or managed work accounts.” They may not. Google’s Gemini Developer API has separate storage behavior, including up to 24 hours for Live API state when a session handle is generated. OpenAI also says managed-workspace settings and organizational policies still apply.
A quick pre-conversation checklist
- Know which assistant, signed-in account, and device are active.
- Check history/activity, model improvement, audio/video sharing, memory, and auto-delete separately.
- Use physical microphone mute when voice input is not needed.
- Keep credentials and sensitive work details out of spoken prompts.
- Review and delete old chats, activity, recordings, and saved memories through their respective controls.
- For work or school use, confirm administrator access and retention rules.
- Ask permission before including other people in Gemini Live audio/video.
