Use AI to draft product copy, not to verify it. Before a listing goes live, check every factual and implied claim against approved product records, review the complete listing for its overall impression, and have an editor assess brand voice. A repeatable process—controlled inputs, evidence checks, risk-based approvals, and testing—helps catch invented features and inconsistent wording.
1. Give the AI approved product information
Start with structured facts from records your team trusts, such as the product feed, specification sheet, packaging, or approved warranty terms. Include only information that is confirmed for the exact product and model.

- Product name, model, and materials
- Dimensions and compatibility
- What is included in the package
- Care instructions, warranty, and limitations
- Benefits that have appropriate supporting evidence
Mark missing or uncertain fields as blank. Tell the model to omit them or flag them for review—not to infer a likely answer. This is a practical editorial safeguard, not a prompting method shown by the cited sources to guarantee accuracy. AI-generated copy is still advertising: the FTC says advertising claims must be truthful, not deceptive or unfair, and evidence-based. FTC advertising and marketing guidance

Give the model a current guide that an editor can apply, rather than relying on a vague request to “sound on-brand.” Useful guidance includes:
#1 Best Overall
- Tone attributes and intended audience
- Approved product terminology and words or phrases to avoid
- Formatting rules, such as sentence case or bullet length
- A few approved examples that represent the desired style
Ask for a draft that follows those constraints, then compare it with the guide. Brand voice is an editorial consistency goal, not an objectively guaranteed capability of a model. NIST recommends evaluating model capability claims empirically; it does not prescribe a particular brand-voice system. NIST AI 600-1, Generative AI Profile
3. Verify each claim against a source
Review the draft sentence by sentence. For each concrete statement, identify the approved record or evidence that supports it. Do not treat fluent phrasing, a model’s explanation, or repetition across generated versions as proof.
Rank #2
- Is this a product fact, or a claim about performance, safety, health, environmental impact, compatibility, origin, or comparison with another product?
- Does the evidence apply to this exact product, model, and wording?
- Does a limitation or qualification need to appear beside the claim so the overall message is accurate?
- Has the draft added a detail that was not in the approved input?

4. Review the whole listing, not just the prose
Read the product title, bullets, long description, imagery, labels, and comparison charts together. A product name, visual treatment, or omitted limitation can imply a benefit that no single sentence states directly. FTC guidance calls for assessing the advertisement’s net impression for reasonable consumers, including its intended audience—not just the advertiser’s intended meaning. For example, a scientific-looking image beside a health-related product description may strengthen an implied efficacy message. Check what a shopper could reasonably take away from the complete presentation, then revise or remove unsupported implications.
5. Escalate higher-risk claims
Route health, safety, environmental, efficacy, and regulated-category claims for stronger evidence checks and specialist approval. The support required depends on the specific product and claim; a general statement or evidence about a different product is not automatically sufficient.
Rank #4
- Health and safety: FTC guidance says these claims require competent and reliable scientific evidence, with the kind and level of support depending on factors including the product and claim. FTC Health Products Compliance Guidance
- Environmental benefits: Environmental claims also need competent and reliable scientific evidence. FTC Green Guides
6. Test the workflow and keep records
Before using the process broadly, test it on representative products, including different categories, levels of product-data completeness, and types of claims. Record what the review finds and who has authority to approve each category of copy.

Repeat testing when the model, prompts, product feed, or brand guide changes. NIST’s Generative AI Profile recommends evaluating capability claims with empirically validated methods, measuring performance under conditions similar to deployment, documenting measures, and sharing pre-deployment test results with relevant approval authorities. It is voluntary guidance, not a legal requirement. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is organized around Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage; its resource page says the framework is being updated. Who is responsible for the final copy?
The business publishing the listing remains responsible for its advertising claims. FTC truth-in-advertising principles apply online as well as in other media. Treat AI as a drafting aid: it cannot independently verify product facts or create the evidence needed to support a claim. Keep an editor responsible for checking the records, the full listing, and the required approvals before publication. FTC advertising and marketing guidance
