How to Keep AI-Generated Music from Sounding Generic

A practical workflow for making Suno and Udio songs feel less generic: scene-first prompts, specific musical choices, authored lyrics, comparison of takes and hands-on editing.

Generic AI music usually comes from a generic brief followed by accepting the first result. The fix is to give the generator a scene and a few concrete musical choices, generate several takes, and keep the best parts. Then add things the model can’t supply for you: your own lyric, your voice, a sample, or an edited arrangement. These steps give you more direction and ownership, but nothing guarantees a result that is unique.

Why a broad prompt sounds like everything else

A prompt such as “sad pop song” leaves nearly every creative decision to the model, so it fills the gaps with the most typical choices. Suno’s official song-making guide contrasts a broad prompt with a more specific brief. Udio’s help guide recommends specificity across mood, genre, tempo, instruments and theme. Both platforms also advise generating alternatives and iterating, which is a sign that one output isn’t meant to be the end point.

A 2025 paper by Casini, Cros Vila, Dalmazzo, Kaila and Sturm analyzed user-generated Suno and Udio material from May to October 2024. It reports recurring themes and patterns in prompts, tags, lyrics and metatags. That is a description of what users did in that period. It doesn’t show that any technique causes less generic results, so the workflow below combines the platforms’ own guidance with editorial judgment.

A six-step workflow

1. Name the scene before the genre

Write one line about who is present, what is happening, and what emotional contradiction or change the song should carry. For example: “Someone cleaning out a childhood bedroom, cheerful on the surface, grieving underneath.” Udio’s guide explicitly suggests imagery or scenarios. A scene gives the model something to be specific about, and it gives you a standard to judge the output against.

  • 40 mm drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum wire voice coils
  • Tuned for enhanced low frequency performance
  • Circumaural design contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments
  • Convenient single side cable exit

2. Pick a small set of musical specifics

Choose:

  • a mood;
  • a genre or a deliberate blend, and optionally an era (Udio recommends mixing genres and setting an era);
  • an approximate tempo;
  • the foreground instruments;
  • a vocal character;
  • one arrangement contrast, such as a sparse verse opening into a wider chorus.

The platform guidance directly supports mood, genre, tempo, instruments and theme. The arrangement-contrast idea is editorial advice rather than something either platform prescribes. Keep the list short. Piling on a dozen descriptors tends to produce a blur of them, and it makes it harder to tell which one did what.

3. Supply authored material where it matters

Write or revise the lyric, the refrain or a melodic idea yourself instead of leaving every expressive choice to the generator. Both Suno and Udio describe custom lyrics, and Suno recommends section markers. Treat markers and cues as steering aids. They may not be followed perfectly.

4. Generate alternatives and compare

Make several versions and keep the one with the strongest hook, voice, groove or texture. In each new round, change only a few prompt details so you can tell what caused the difference. Both official guides recommend versions and refinement.

5. Edit the promising take

Suno’s guide describes editing sections, adding vocals or instruments, splitting stems, exporting stems or MIDI, and mixing in other software. It also says you can layer your own voice or samples. If prompt controls aren’t enough, you can move stems or MIDI into a DAW to rearrange, replace sounds and mix. This is a supported next step, not something every creator needs. Which tools you get can depend on the platform and your plan, so check current plan access.

6. Describe the sound instead of naming an artist

Artist names pull toward imitation and handle inconsistently across platforms. Suno says it redirects prompts that name a specific artist toward descriptive musical characteristics, and states: “AI should help people create something new, not imitate someone else’s work.” Udio says it won’t copy an artist’s voice but may capture a similar musical feel. Those are platform statements, not legal guarantees. Describe traits instead, such as clipped phrasing, a dry close-miked vocal, offbeat percussion, a narrow melodic range, or a particular instrument playing a particular role. Only use descriptors that honestly fit the sound you want.

  • Hook: can you hum the melody afterward?
  • Lyric specificity: are there concrete images, or only stock phrases?
  • Arrangement movement: does it change meaningfully between sections?
  • Vocal character: is the phrasing distinctive and consistent?
  • Mix space: does the mix leave room for the one detail that defines the track?

When choosing a platform, compare the controls you actually get: prompt and tag flexibility, custom lyrics and cues, iteration, section editing, and stem or MIDI export.

If you plan to release it

Platform ownership terms and copyright eligibility are separate questions. Suno’s help page says wholly AI-generated music may not qualify for US copyright protection, while human-written lyrics may be protected. It also cautions that treatment varies by region and that distributor terms can differ. This is platform guidance, not legal advice, so verify the current terms and your jurisdiction before releasing or monetizing. It’s another practical reason to add authored lyrics, performance and arrangement.
