For database files on NFS, Oracle recommends considering Oracle Direct NFS (dNFS) and following the instructions for the exact database release and operating system. These steps explain the connection; they do not establish that every Oracle Database configuration or production workload is supported on OCI File Storage.
Understand the OCI File Storage components
OCI File Storage makes a file system available to NFS clients through two related resources:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Mount target: The network endpoint that an NFS client connects to.
- Export: The path that makes a particular file system available through a mount target.
A file system needs at least one export in a mount target before a client can mount it. See Oracle’s File Storage overview for the service model and terminology.
Check support before choosing what to store on NFS
Before configuring storage, identify the Oracle Database release and update, host operating system, single-instance or clustered topology, and the files you intend to place on the file system. Check current Oracle support and certification for that exact combination and production use. General instructions for mounting OCI File Storage and Oracle’s NFS installation guidance do not, by themselves, establish support for every OCI-specific database configuration.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Also distinguish the host’s operating-system NFS mount from Oracle Database’s own NFS client configuration. Oracle’s 19c Linux x86-64 installation guide says: “If you plan to place storage on Network File System (NFS) protocol devices, then Oracle recommends that you use Oracle Direct NFS (dNFS) to take advantage of performance optimizations built into the Oracle Direct NFS client.” The recommendation is not a certification statement for every workload. Consult the guide for your database version and platform: Oracle Database 19c on Linux x86-64 or Oracle Database 21c on Linux x86-64.
Create the file system, mount target, and export
- Create the file system in the tenancy and VCN intended for the database workload. Oracle’s creation prerequisites recommend using a subnet dedicated to mount targets.
- Ensure the file system is exported through a mount target. The export details identify the path the client will mount.
- Keep track of the specific mount target and export associated with the intended file system; do not guess the export path.
Oracle’s mounting guide describes the console workflow and mount command samples.

Allow the database host to reach the mount target
The host needs network reachability to the mount target, and the applicable OCI security rules must permit the required NFS traffic. If you use the mount target’s hostname, verify that it resolves to the intended address from the database host. Use the security and network configuration appropriate to the VCN and subnet rather than assuming that creating an export makes it reachable.

Mount the export from the host
- Install an NFS client compatible with the host’s operating system.
- In the OCI Console, open the file system’s export details and copy the mount command sample for the relevant operating system image.
- Check that the sample refers to the intended mount target and export path. If it uses a hostname, verify name resolution before troubleshooting the mount itself.
- Run the command on the database host and confirm that the file system is mounted at the intended local path.
Use Oracle’s console-generated sample as the starting point instead of constructing an export path from memory. OCI’s mounting guide warns that rsize and wsize mount options cause performance issues with File Storage; do not add them to the command. NFS locking is enabled by default. Use nolock only if application-specific guidance calls for it, not as a universal setting.
Configure Oracle Database to use NFS
Mounting the export at the operating-system level is not the same as configuring Oracle Database’s NFS access. For database files on NFS, Oracle recommends dNFS for performance optimizations. Its setup uses oranfstab and can include additional platform-specific steps, so follow the installation documentation for the exact database release and operating system rather than copying settings from another configuration.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep the two configuration layers distinct
| Layer | What it configures | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| OCI and operating-system NFS | Network path to the mount target and the host’s mount of the export | Mount target, export path, NFS client, security rules, hostname resolution, and OCI mount options |
| Oracle Database dNFS | Oracle Database’s NFS client configuration | Database release, operating system, oranfstab requirements, and any platform-specific setup |
Neither layer alone answers whether a particular database workload is supported or suitable. Make that determination against current Oracle support information for the exact database version, platform, topology, and files being placed on shared storage.
