A system prompt that says “do not open confidential files” is useful guidance, but it is not an access-control boundary.
Use the controls below as a layered design. If one layer is bypassed by prompt injection, a compromised connector or a coding error, the remaining layers should still limit what the agent can read, change or disclose.

What it means for an agent to “access” something
An agent can reach more than the files visible in its chat window. Its effective access includes local and mounted files, cloud drives, databases, application programming interfaces, browser sessions, plugins, model context and memory, remote services, helper processes and outbound network connections. A connector or remote tool may have a different identity and permissions from the process running the model, so its access must be included in the same threat boundary.

Prompt injection is the central failure mode. A malicious instruction can be placed directly in a user message or indirectly in a web page, email, document, issue, calendar entry or tool description that the agent is asked to read. If the agent has broad permissions, that instruction can persuade it to retrieve a secret, send data to an attacker or make an account change. OpenAI’s Understanding prompt injections, the OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet and OWASP’s AI Agent and MCP Security guidance all point to the same practical response: reduce the agent’s authority and enforce authorization in tools and services, rather than trusting the model to classify every instruction correctly.

Containment is also deployment-specific. A process sandbox may isolate shell commands while a remote MCP server, browser integration or cloud connector retains its own permissions. Network controls depend on where that connection is made. Verify the actual identity, data path and policy for every component instead of assuming that a product label such as “sandboxed” covers the whole workflow.
Use four enforcement layers instead of one safeguard
| Layer | What it controls | Practical enforcement | What can go wrong if omitted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identity and authorization | Files, records, accounts and APIs associated with an agent | Dedicated service identity, role-based permissions, task-scoped and expiring grants, revocation and audit trails | The agent inherits a person’s broad access and actions cannot be reliably attributed |
| Application and tool | Operations the agent may request | Allowlisted paths and APIs, argument validation, approved roots, output validation and least-agency tool design | A permitted tool becomes a general-purpose file reader, shell or data-export mechanism |
| Runtime and network | Processes, mounts, connectors and outbound destinations | Separate compute, restricted file mounts, isolated workloads and outbound allowlists | A tool or dependency reaches data or services outside the intended task |
| Human and policy review | Disclosure, account changes and other high-impact actions | Deterministic policy checks, meaningful approval screens, logging, monitoring and investigation | A plausible-looking model plan executes without an accountable decision |
These layers complement one another. A secrets vault can reduce exposure, but it does not decide whether every requested operation is authorized. A prompt can describe a trust boundary, but only the service receiving the request can enforce it.
Build the restriction step by step
1. Inventory the agent’s actual reach
Start with an access map, not with the model’s stated purpose. Record every resource and path the agent can use:
- Local directories, mounted volumes, temporary files and shared workspaces.
- Cloud drives, document stores, databases, queues and memory stores.
- Browser sessions, plugins, function tools, shell commands, MCP servers and helper services.
- Service identities, delegated user tokens, API keys, cookies and certificates.
- Remote connectors, model-provider integrations and outbound network destinations.
- Read, write, delete, execute, send, publish and administrative operations.
Trace each tool call to the identity and service that ultimately performs it. An agent that appears to have read-only access may still be able to ask a remote service to export or email the same data. Microsoft’s guidance on reducing risk in autonomous agentic AI recommends maintaining this inventory and revisiting it as models, tools and dependencies change.
2. Define a narrow task role
Write the role as a finite set of resources and operations. Begin with no access where the platform permits it, then add only what the current job requires. For example, a document-classification task might need read access to one intake directory and permission to write labels to a queue; it does not automatically need the rest of the shared drive, deletion rights or outbound email.
Prefer grants that are limited by task, record, path, operation and time. Remove or expire them when the job ends. Separate “read a record,” “update a record” and “send a message” into distinct capabilities so that a prompt injection cannot turn a low-risk operation into a high-impact one. This is the least-agency principle described by OWASP: do not expose a powerful general tool when a smaller purpose-built operation will work.

3. Give the agent its own identity
Use a dedicated service identity or equivalent agent identity rather than a person’s normal account. Tie ownership to a team or system so an operator can answer who created it, what task it serves and who reviews its activity. Apply role-based access controls to that identity and make every request attributable to it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use short-lived or task-scoped credentials where the platform supports them. Rotate long-lived credentials, revoke access when a workflow is retired and test revocation rather than assuming it works. Keep human approval separate from the agent identity: a user’s approval should authorize one described action, not silently transfer the user’s entire permissions to the model.
4. Keep secrets out of the agent’s general environment
Do not place production passwords, private keys, bearer tokens or unrestricted connection strings in prompts, chat history, source files or directories the agent can browse. A secret that is visible to the model can be copied into an answer, log, generated file or external request.
Use a secrets manager or trusted execution boundary to provide only the credential required for an already-authorized operation. Bind retrieval to the agent identity, task and destination where possible, and prevent the model from freely enumerating secret names or values. A vault limits exposure; it does not replace authorization checks on the operation that uses the secret.
5. Isolate execution and restrict egress
Run workloads that should not share data on separate compute or isolated workers. Mount only approved directories, use disposable workspaces for temporary data and prevent access to host files, metadata services and unrelated sockets. Restrict outbound connections to an explicit allowlist of destinations and protocols required by the task.
Check the documented coverage of every interface. A shell sandbox may not constrain a browser, file-search tool, MCP server or remote connector. An outbound allowlist applied to one worker may not apply to a service that makes the connection elsewhere. OpenAI’s Sandbox security guidance emphasizes workload separation, outbound allowlists and credential protection; OWASP likewise calls out sandbox scope and egress as separate controls.

6. Mark outside content as data, not authority
Define trust boundaries in the application. System policy and authorized user instructions are one class of input; documents, web pages, emails, issue comments and tool descriptions retrieved during a task are another. Pass untrusted content to the model as quoted data with its source and purpose, not as instructions that can redefine permissions.
Do not rely on a sentence such as “ignore malicious instructions” as the only defense. The file-reading service should enforce which path may be read, the database should enforce which rows may be returned and the mail service should enforce which recipients are allowed. Model-level detection can help identify suspicious content, but it cannot guarantee that every injection will be recognized.
7. Validate tool calls and model outputs
Put deterministic checks between the model and each sensitive tool:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Resolve paths and require them to remain under an approved root; reject traversal, symlink escapes and ambiguous path forms.
- Allow only enumerated operations and destinations. Validate record identifiers, recipient addresses, query scope, file types and size limits.
- Reject unexpected argument combinations, repeated retries and requests that expand scope without a new authorization decision.
- Sanitize returned content before placing it into prompts, code, queries, templates or shell commands.
- Validate generated code, SQL, configuration and messages before execution or publication.
Microsoft’s Agent Safety guidance treats validation as a control in its own right. The model should propose an operation; the enforcing service should decide whether that operation is syntactically valid, in scope and authorized.
8. Gate consequential actions
Require a person or deterministic policy to approve sensitive disclosure, account changes, financial operations, deletion, publication, permission changes and messages to external recipients. The approval screen should show the exact action, resources, destination, identity, justification and data that will leave the boundary. “Approve” should authorize that operation, not an open-ended plan.
Use stronger authentication for critical actions and make the approval expire. For low-risk, reversible work, an automated policy may be sufficient; for irreversible or high-impact work, require explicit human confirmation. Microsoft’s documentation on experimental agentic features highlights containment, supervision, approval and permission limits as complementary safeguards.

9. Log, monitor and review
Record the agent identity, user or workflow that initiated the task, requested operation, resource, authorization decision, tool and connector used, result and timestamp. Keep enough context to reconstruct what happened without logging secret values or unnecessary sensitive content.
Alert on unusual file breadth, access outside the task role, repeated authorization failures, unexpected destinations, rapid enumeration, large exports and attempts to disable controls. Review permissions and connector behavior whenever the model, tool, prompt template, dependency or data source changes. Logs support accountability and investigation; they do not prevent an unauthorized action by themselves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to sandbox an AI agent without creating a false boundary
A useful sandbox combines process isolation, filesystem restrictions, network policy and identity separation. Its coverage should be documented in terms of interfaces rather than marketing labels.
- Process and workload: run the agent on separate compute or a disposable worker when it handles untrusted material or code.
- Filesystem: mount only the approved task directory, make unrelated paths unavailable and control temporary-file retention.
- Network: deny by default and allow only named services, ports and protocols. Confirm where DNS resolution and the actual connection occur.
- Connectors: assess browser tools, MCP servers, remote APIs and helper services separately; each may have its own identity and policy.
- Credentials: inject narrowly scoped secrets only at the point of an authorized operation, never into a general-purpose environment.
Test the boundary with negative cases: attempt to read a neighboring directory, reach an unapproved host, call a connector with another identity and retrieve a secret outside the task. A passing test demonstrates the tested configuration, not universal protection; repeat it after infrastructure or connector changes.
A prompt-injection scenario and the correct response
Suppose an agent is asked to summarize invoices. One invoice contains hidden text telling it to search the shared drive for payroll files and upload them to an external site. A model may follow that instruction if it interprets the invoice as authoritative. The layered response is:
- The file service allows reads only from the invoice intake path, so payroll files are unavailable.
- The agent identity has no permission to upload to arbitrary destinations.
- The runtime’s egress policy blocks the external site.
- The tool wrapper rejects a path outside the approved root and an unapproved recipient.
- The attempted scope expansion is logged and flagged for review.
- If the agent proposes a sensitive disclosure, the workflow pauses for an approval that shows the exact data and destination.
The prompt can still instruct the model to treat invoice text as untrusted, but the scenario remains contained even if that instruction is ignored.

Compare controls by the questions that determine real coverage
When evaluating an agent platform, internal service or security product, compare it on these axes rather than on a single “safe” label:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which resource is protected? | Files, identity, APIs, memory and network require different controls. |
| Where is enforcement performed? | Application code, operating system/runtime, identity provider and cloud service boundaries have different visibility and failure modes. |
| How narrow and how long is access? | Task-scoped, expiring grants limit the consequences of an error better than standing permissions. |
| Do all tools and connectors share the boundary? | A restriction that covers shell access may not cover a browser, MCP server or remote service. |
| Can access be revoked and actions attributed? | Revocation limits ongoing exposure; attribution supports accountability and investigation. |
| Are audit and alerts available? | Records of requests, decisions and outcomes make anomalous behavior detectable. |
| Is deterministic approval supported? | High-impact actions need an accountable decision independent of model interpretation. |
Common mistakes and their fixes
Using a person’s account for convenience
Problem: the agent inherits broad access, and its actions look like the person’s own activity. Fix: create a dedicated, owned identity with explicit roles, expiry and audit records.
Assuming a vault solves authorization
Problem: the agent can obtain a valid secret and use it for an unapproved destination or operation. Fix: bind secret delivery to a task and enforce authorization at the receiving service.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Protecting the shell but not the connectors
Problem: a remote tool or browser can reach data that the sandbox blocks locally. Fix: inventory and test every connector’s identity, runtime location, mounts and egress.
Relying on a system prompt
Problem: direct or indirect prompt injection can conflict with the instruction. Fix: enforce allowlists, scopes and approval gates outside the model.
Approving vague plans
Problem: a reviewer approves “process the customer request” without seeing files, recipients or side effects. Fix: display the concrete operation, data, destination and identity, and require a fresh decision for scope changes.
Logging the wrong things
Problem: logs omit the decision trail or expose the secrets they are meant to protect. Fix: log identity, operation, resource, policy result and outcome while redacting credentials and unnecessary content.

Operational checklist
- Have you listed every file path, data source, API, tool, connector, identity and network destination?
- Does the agent start with no access and receive only the permissions required for this task?
- Is its identity separate from human accounts, owned, attributable and revocable?
- Are grants limited by operation, resource and duration?
- Are production secrets absent from prompts, files and general environment variables?
- Does the runtime isolate workloads, mounts and outbound connections?
- Are documents, web pages, emails and tool descriptions treated as untrusted data?
- Do wrappers validate paths, arguments, destinations, returned content and generated output?
- Do sensitive disclosures and account changes require meaningful approval?
- Do logs support reconstruction without recording secret values?
- Are alerts and periodic access reviews in place for model, tool and dependency changes?
- Have you tested denial cases for each interface, including remote connectors?
Bottom line
Keep an AI agent from sensitive files and accounts by making unauthorized access technically unavailable, not merely discouraged. Combine a dedicated least-privilege identity, narrow tool permissions, isolated execution, restricted egress, protected secret delivery, untrusted-content handling, deterministic validation, approval for consequential actions and continuous auditing. Prompt instructions can improve behavior, but only independently enforced boundaries can limit the damage when the model, a document or a connector behaves unexpectedly.
