Sometimes. Android voice typing is not one single feature. Standard Gboard dictation, Pixel Advanced voice typing and the newer Enhanced Dictation mode have different offline behavior, device requirements and data paths. A downloaded language does not guarantee that ordinary Gboard dictation will work without an internet connection on every phone.

Pixel 6 and newer devices can keep ordinary Advanced voice typing on the device in supported languages. Enhanced Dictation can retain basic dictation functions offline where that feature is available, while advanced rewriting and complex commands wait for a connection. Recordings can also follow separate paths: local personalization, voluntary Gboard audio donations and Google Account Assistant history are controlled independently.

Which Android voice-typing feature are you using?

The microphone you tap determines the feature and its privacy behavior. A microphone on the Gboard keyboard is Gboard voice typing. A microphone inside Google Assistant or another app follows that product’s processing and account settings instead.

Google’s ordinary Gboard instructions explain how to tap the keyboard microphone and dictate, but they do not promise universal offline operation. They also warn that talk-to-text is unavailable for some languages. Treat standard Gboard dictation as device-, language- and configuration-dependent rather than assuming that every Android phone behaves the same way.

Pixel Advanced voice typing is a separate feature. Enhanced Dictation is another mode with its own documented offline behavior. They are not interchangeable names for one service.

Offline behavior by mode

Mode Eligibility and languages What works offline When data can leave the device
Standard Gboard voice typing Available through the keyboard microphone, but Google does not promise it for every Android device or language. Varies by device, language and configuration. A language download alone is not a universal guarantee. Google’s general instructions do not establish one rule for all configurations.
Pixel Advanced voice typing Pixel 6 and newer, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. Supported languages listed by Google are English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish; the primary Gboard and device languages must match. Core dictation plus punctuation, emoji and voice commands can run on the device after setup. Ordinary dictated text stays on the device. Using Fix it or detailed edits sends the transcript and input-field text to Google; Google says no audio is sent and no text or audio is stored on its servers for that processing.
Enhanced Dictation Feature-specific availability; the documented behavior comes from a French Gboard help page, so exact English rollout and device scope should not be assumed. Basic corrections, automatic punctuation and capitalization continue offline. A Retry button can appear after a connection drops; tapping it processes the finished dictation offline. Advanced stylistic rewrites and complex conversational voice commands require network service.

Standard Gboard: no universal offline promise

To dictate with ordinary Gboard, open a text field, tap the keyboard microphone and speak. If the microphone is unavailable or dictation stops without a connection, that is not necessarily a fault: Google does not document one offline guarantee covering all Android phones and languages.

Do not describe a downloaded language pack as proof that offline dictation is supported. Language downloads, Android builds, Gboard versions and device hardware can affect the result.

Pixel Advanced voice typing: on-device by design

Google documents Advanced voice typing for Pixel 6 and later, including the Fold and Tablet. It adds automatic punctuation, emoji and voice commands to the dictation experience. For ordinary use, Google states: “The text you speak stays on your device and isn’t sent to Google servers except when you use the ‘Fix it’ or detailed edits features.”

When you request a detailed edit, Google says the transcript and the text already in the input field are sent for processing. It also says that no audio is sent and that neither the text nor audio is stored on Google’s servers for that feature.

Enhanced Dictation: limited offline mode

The newer Enhanced Dictation help result describes a more limited offline fallback. Basic corrections, capitalization and automatic punctuation can continue without network service. Rewriting that changes style and complex conversational commands become available again when a connection returns.

If the connection fails while you are dictating, finish speaking and look for a Retry button. Tapping Retry can process that dictation offline. Because the documented result is from a French help page and the equivalent English page and precise rollout scope were not established, check whether Enhanced Dictation is actually present on your device before relying on it.

How to enable and check Pixel Advanced voice typing

  1. Open any app with a text field, such as Messages or a notes app.
  2. Show Gboard, then tap the Gboard settings icon. If the icon is hidden, tap the four-square or three-dot menu on the keyboard first.
  3. Choose Voice typing and look for Advanced voice typing.
  4. Turn it on if your Pixel is eligible. The feature is documented for Pixel 6 and newer, including Fold and Tablet.
  5. Confirm that the device language and primary Gboard language match one of the supported languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish.
  6. Allow the required updates to download. Google recommends Wi-Fi; a new device can need several hours and updates before Advanced voice typing works. On Android 12, update the Android System Intelligence app if prompted.
  7. Test with Wi-Fi disabled by dictating a short sentence. Test ordinary dictation separately from Fix it and detailed edits, because those editing features use a different processing path.

Menu names can differ by Android, Gboard and locale version. If you do not see a label exactly as written, search Settings for “voice typing” or “Gboard.”

What happens to your audio and transcripts?

There is no single “Google voice recording” switch. Separate controls govern local learning, optional Gboard donations and Assistant recordings saved to a Google Account.

On-device personalization

Gboard’s Personalize for you option can save audio recordings and transcripts on the device to improve recognition for you. You can delete learned words and other Gboard data stored locally. Google also describes federated learning: training happens on the device and learnings are sent for aggregation rather than sending the spoken or typed text itself.

This local personalization path is different from sending a recording to Google for conventional speech-model training. Turning one path off does not automatically change the others.

Optional Gboard audio donations

Audio donations are voluntary. If you agree, Gboard can send short voice snippets to Google to improve speech recognition for everyone. Google says donated snippets are no longer than 15 seconds. A snippet containing silence or unrecognized audio can be up to 25 seconds.

Google says it will keep donated snippets for no more than 18 months. The snippets are not associated with your account, and you cannot retrieve them after sending. Some may be listened to or transcribed by human reviewers.

To review this setting, open Gboard Settings > Privacy > Voice > Audio donations. Disable donations if you do not want future snippets submitted. This setting does not erase recordings already handled through Google Account Voice and Audio Activity, and it does not control every microphone in every app.

Google Account Voice and Audio Activity

Voice and Audio Activity is an optional control under Google Account Web & App Activity. It is off unless you enable it. When enabled, recordings from Assistant interactions can be saved in your account; Google says audio captured while offline may be saved after the device reconnects.

Turning the control off prevents new Assistant recordings from being saved to the account through that setting. It does not stop audio from being processed so Assistant can answer, and it does not delete recordings already saved.

To manage existing items, open Google Account > Data & privacy > Web & App Activity > Manage activity. Review and delete the recordings there. Google says audio saved under Voice and Audio Activity may be reviewed by trained reviewers for service improvement. This account setting does not govern all Google services, all app microphone permissions or every recording stored locally on the phone.

Privacy settings checklist

  • Identify the microphone: keyboard microphone means Gboard; an Assistant or app microphone may use a separate service.
  • Check offline eligibility: standard Gboard has no universal offline promise; Advanced voice typing requires an eligible Pixel and supported language; Enhanced Dictation has feature-specific limited offline behavior.
  • Review local learning: in Gboard Settings, open Privacy and inspect Personalize for you. Delete learned words and data if you want to clear Gboard information stored on the device.
  • Review donations separately: in Gboard Settings > Privacy > Voice, inspect Audio donations. This is voluntary and independent of local personalization.
  • Review account history: in Google Account Web & App Activity, inspect Include voice and audio activity and the existing Manage activity list.
  • Remember the limits: turning off Voice and Audio Activity is not a microphone block and is not a deletion command for older recordings.

Why offline dictation may fail

The phone or language is unsupported

Advanced voice typing is documented only for Pixel 6 and newer, including Fold and Tablet, and for six listed languages. Standard Gboard talk-to-text is not available for every language. Check both your device model and the primary Gboard language instead of assuming that Android branding implies the same feature set.

Required components are not updated

New Pixels may need feature updates before Advanced voice typing becomes usable. Use Wi-Fi for the downloads. On Android 12, check Android System Intelligence as well as Gboard and system updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are testing an online-only command

Enhanced Dictation’s offline fallback covers basic corrections, punctuation and capitalization. Complex conversational commands and advanced stylistic rewrites need a network. Pixel Advanced voice typing’s ordinary dictation behavior should not be confused with its Fix it and detailed-edit actions, which send text for processing.

The connection dropped mid-dictation

With Enhanced Dictation, finish the utterance and use Retry if it appears. Without that mode, standard Gboard may not offer the same fallback, because Google has not promised one offline workflow for all Android configurations.

Practical answers to common privacy questions

“Can I use voice typing without internet?”

Sometimes. Ordinary Gboard dictation is not guaranteed offline across Android. Pixel Advanced voice typing is designed for on-device dictation on eligible Pixels and supported languages. Enhanced Dictation documents a limited offline mode for basic corrections and punctuation.

“Does Google save my voice recordings?”

It depends on the path. Pixel Advanced voice typing keeps ordinary dictated text on the device under Google’s stated exceptions. Gboard audio donations send voluntary snippets for up to the stated retention period. Assistant recordings can be saved to your Google Account only when Voice and Audio Activity is enabled, and those account recordings are managed separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“How do I delete voice-typing recordings?”

First identify which path created them. Delete local Gboard learned data in Gboard’s Privacy settings. Review and delete Assistant recordings in Google Account Web & App Activity. Donated Gboard snippets cannot be retrieved after sending, so disabling Audio donations prevents future donations rather than recovering past ones.
