On a Mac mini, turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off in Apple menu > System Settings > Energy. Set the display’s own inactive timeout separately in System Settings > Lock Screen. For a one-time session, you can instead run caffeinate in Terminal and stop it when you finish. These settings keep the Mac awake; they cannot guarantee that YouTube, your browser, or your internet connection stays uninterrupted.
Keep the Mac mini awake while its display is off
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Energy.
- Turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. The option is documented for desktop Macs; settings and labels can vary by Mac and macOS version. If you do not see it, use the available sleep controls for your desktop Mac.
- To control when the screen goes dark, open System Settings > Lock Screen and set the display’s inactive timeout to your preference.
The Energy setting controls computer sleep; the Lock Screen setting controls the display timeout. Separating them lets the screen turn off without treating that as a reason to put the Mac mini to sleep. Apple cautions that “Delaying, preventing, or allowing disruption of sleep may increase power consumption.” Apple’s sleep and wake settings guide and desktop Energy settings guide describe these controls and note that some options vary by Mac.

Use Terminal for a single listening or viewing session
- Open Terminal.
- Enter
caffeinateand press Return. - Leave the Terminal window and command running while you use the YouTube stream.
- When the session is over, return to that Terminal window and press Control-C.
With no flags, the macOS caffeinate command prevents idle sleep for as long as the command runs; the assertion ends when the command exits. It is convenient for a temporary session, but it is not a YouTube uptime control. See the macOS System Manager’s Manual entry for caffeinate.
Choose the method that fits your routine
| Approach | How long it applies | How to end it | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy setting | Until you turn it off or change the setting | Return to System Settings > Energy and disable the option | Repeated unattended playback when you want the Mac to stay awake with the display off |
caffeinate |
While the Terminal command is running | Press Control-C in its Terminal window | A one-off session when you prefer a temporary keep-awake measure |
Either approach prevents or delays Mac sleep in its stated scope. Neither can ensure that the YouTube page keeps playing, the browser remains responsive, Wi-Fi stays connected, or YouTube’s live stream continues. The Apple Developer property preventsDisplaySleepDuringVideoPlayback describes AVPlayer framework behavior for apps that use AVPlayer; it does not establish that YouTube in a browser will prevent sleep or play indefinitely.

If the Mac mini still sleeps
- Recheck the controls. Confirm the Energy option is on and the Lock Screen timeout is set as intended. The precise controls may vary with the Mac and macOS version.
- Review sharing services. If sleep or wake behavior remains unexpected, check whether Sharing services are active. Apple includes them among the factors to investigate.
- Check background activity. Open Activity Monitor and look for substantial background CPU activity that could be affecting sleep behavior.
- Update macOS and inspect connected devices. Check for available software updates and see whether connected storage or other devices correlate with the problem.
- Do not treat Wake for network access as a keep-awake switch. Apple describes it as waking a sleeping Mac to provide shared resources, not as a setting that prevents sleep.
Apple’s guidance for unexpected sleep recommends investigating settings, Sharing services, background activity, software, and connected devices: If your Mac sleeps or wakes unexpectedly.
What this does—and does not—keep running
Keeping the Mac awake removes one possible cause of interrupted playback: the computer going to sleep. It does not make the browser, router, Wi-Fi, power supply, YouTube, or the live stream immune to interruptions. If a stream stops while the Mac is still awake, check the browser and network connection as well as the Mac’s sleep settings.

If you keep the Mac awake regularly, consider your own power use. Apple warns that preventing or delaying sleep may increase it; no universal wattage or running cost can be inferred for every Mac mini setup. To estimate yours, measure the Mac’s actual draw with a suitable power meter over a representative period, then apply your electricity rate.
