Replace the playlist without stopping the YouTube stream
This workflow applies to a scheduled live stream sent to YouTube by an encoder. The encoder or playout system determines what viewers see; YouTube receives its outgoing feed through a stream URL and stream key. Playlist editing and the transition between videos therefore depend on the software or service supplying that feed.

- Prepare the scheduled stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and set up the scheduled stream. In the encoder’s stream settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Connect and check the encoder before going live. Start the encoder and wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room. Check that the video and audio look and sound as intended before clicking Go live. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time and checking the preview.
- Change the playlist at its source. Once the scheduled stream is live, use the playlist controls in the encoder or playout system that generates the outgoing feed. Keep its YouTube output connection active; do not stop or disconnect the encoder as part of the playlist change unless that system’s documented procedure requires it.
- Monitor the transition. Watch the outgoing preview and listen to the audio through the change. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and verifying that the event is accessible. If possible, check the viewer-facing stream as well.
- Test before relying on continuity. Run a trial with the same encoder, playlist, and output configuration you plan to use. The cited YouTube guidance does not promise uninterrupted video or audio when a third-party playlist is edited.
Which controls are in YouTube Studio—and which are not
- Stream URL and key: connect the encoder’s outgoing feed to YouTube. The key is entered in the encoder.
- Scheduled stream: creates a watch page that can be promoted and started from Live Control Room. For an encoder stream, YouTube’s documented sequence is to connect and start the encoder, wait for preview, then click Go live.
- Reuse settings and key: YouTube can copy metadata, settings, and a stream key from a previous stream to a new one. This retains stream configuration; it does not replace the encoder’s playlist.
- Auto-start and auto-stop: these settings govern starting and stopping encoder streams. YouTube’s documentation does not describe them as playlist controls.

Keep an eye on audio and video during the playlist update, not just on whether Live Control Room still shows a connection. A connected encoder does not by itself establish that the intended playlist is playing correctly. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend advance encoder setup and ongoing quality monitoring. YouTube notes that software encoding is an option and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events; that guidance does not make a hardware encoder a requirement for changing a playlist.

If an archive matters, record a local copy as a backup. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for very long streams. Check YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams when planning a long-running broadcast.
Troubleshooting a playlist change
- The stream ends when you edit the playlist: the encoder or playout system may be stopping or restarting its output. Check that product’s playlist-transition procedure and test it before the next live run; YouTube’s settings do not control the third-party playlist.
- There is a blank, frozen, or silent interval: monitor the encoder’s outgoing preview and audio during a test. The exact behavior depends on the playout system, and YouTube does not guarantee a seamless change.
- The new video does not appear: confirm the playlist was changed in the system actually generating the outgoing feed, rather than only in YouTube Studio. Then check the preview and the playout system’s status.
- The encoder preview is missing before the stream starts: verify the stream URL and key in the encoder, confirm it is running, and wait for the preview in Live Control Room before clicking Go live.
- The archive is incomplete or unavailable: YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording when a dependable archive is needed, and account for possible DVR rewind limits on very long streams.
