If YouTube stops after a song or video, check Autoplay or try a YouTube Mix. If playback continues but you hear a pause between tracks, that is a separate issue: YouTube’s playlist controls can continue playback, but the available official help does not promise gapless transitions or crossfade for every device and account.
First, identify what kind of interruption you mean
- The playlist stops: YouTube does not start another item when the current one ends. Check Autoplay, the queue, and any prompt asking whether you are still watching.
- Playback continues, but there is a pause or silence between tracks: That is a transition issue, not simply a failure to continue the playlist. Autoplay is not a crossfade setting, and a next item starting does not guarantee seamless audio.
- Playback stalls or buffers during a track: Check the connection and troubleshoot the app or device. Buffering is different from a track ending normally.
These distinctions matter because the fixes are different: Autoplay and Mix help with what plays next; connection and app troubleshooting address interruptions during playback. YouTube’s help pages do not establish a platform-wide guarantee of gapless playback across its apps, browsers, devices, and account types.

Use Autoplay when you want YouTube to choose what plays next
YouTube says Autoplay starts another related video after the current one ends. It is useful when you want playback to continue and do not need a fixed, hand-picked order. The setting can vary by device, so check it on the device you are actually using.

- Open the YouTube player on your device and find the Autoplay control. Its location and presentation vary by device and app version.
- Turn Autoplay on for the playback session. YouTube’s instructions cover device-specific controls at Autoplay videos.
- Check the queue and the next item if the current video ends without the expected continuation. Autoplay selects a related video; it does not necessarily continue a fixed playlist in your chosen order.
- For long unattended sessions, account for inactivity prompts. YouTube may ask “Continue watching?” during Autoplay after 30 minutes of uninterrupted watching on mobile, 60 minutes on web, or 180 minutes on TV. If you do not respond, playback may not continue.
Try a YouTube Mix for personalized, ongoing playback
YouTube describes a Mix as “a nonstop playlist tailored to you.” A Mix is a practical choice when you want YouTube to assemble a personalized sequence rather than preserve a precise track order. You can save a Mix to your library using the controls described in YouTube’s YouTube Mix help page.

Choose a Mix if personalized continuation is acceptable. Choose a hand-curated playlist if order matters, but do not assume that either option guarantees gapless transitions between recordings.
Make or reorder a fixed playlist
If you want specific videos in a particular order, use a playlist rather than relying on related-video Autoplay. YouTube Music’s computer instructions cover creating and editing playlists, including reordering songs: Make or edit a playlist — Computer.

- Create or open the playlist in YouTube Music.
- Add the tracks you want and arrange them in the intended sequence using the playlist editing controls.
- Start playback from the playlist and check the queue if the next track is not the one you expected.
- Keep the expectation precise: playlist order determines which track comes next; it does not, by itself, enable crossfade or establish that the audio handoff will be gapless.
Fix buffering or unexpected playback interruptions
If a track pauses, buffers, or drops out before it ends, YouTube Music’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection first, then trying app and device fixes. YouTube gives at least 3 Mbps as Wi-Fi guidance and recommends at least four bars for mobile connectivity; those are support recommendations, not guarantees that every interruption will disappear.
- Check your connection. Try a strong Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. If possible, compare playback on another network to see whether the issue follows the connection.
- Restart the device. Reopen YouTube Music and test playback again.
- Install available system updates. An outdated operating system can contribute to app problems.
- Clear the app cache if you are using an app and playback trouble persists. The exact controls vary by device.

What YouTube Music Premium does—and does not establish
YouTube lists background play for music, ad-free music, audio-only playback, and downloads among YouTube Music Premium benefits. These are distinct from crossfade or guaranteed gapless transitions. Availability of features can vary by country or region and account. Check What is YouTube Music? for YouTube’s feature overview; do not treat a Premium subscription by itself as proof that a specific playlist will crossfade.

YouTube’s official help pages explain playlists, Autoplay, Mixes, Premium features, and troubleshooting, but they do not document a universal gapless-transition guarantee. A YouTube Music Community Product Expert response from November 2022 said gapless playback was available to Premium users and crossfade was not; that is historical community guidance, not a verified statement of current behavior. A later community discussion also reflects users asking for gapless transitions, but user questions do not establish that a feature exists. Because behavior may differ by app, device, and account and the available official guidance does not settle the current crossfade state, check the controls available in your own version rather than assuming it is supported.
