Control song rotation in the system that feeds your YouTube live stream—not with YouTube Music’s shuffle or repeat button. Shuffle can change the order, but it does not enforce a minimum gap between plays. For a strict cooldown, use a playout workflow that records play history and excludes recently played tracks until the chosen interval has passed.
Why YouTube playlist controls do not control a live channel’s rotation
YouTube Music shuffle and repeat affect an individual listener’s playback. They do not select the songs broadcast by a channel’s live stream. Google’s Live Streaming API describes the distinction: “A stream enables you to transmit audio-video content to YouTube.” The stream is the audio-video feed; song selection happens upstream in the channel’s playout setup. YouTube’s broadcast tools manage delivery and live events, not the order of tracks in that feed. Google for Developers’ YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes streams and broadcasts.

OBS can connect an operator’s video and audio source to YouTube and help manage or schedule broadcasts. A playlist in a local playback setup may supply the media, but the rotation policy must come from that source or another part of the playout workflow. See the OBS Project’s YouTube guide.
Choose between shuffle and a real repeat cooldown
Use shuffle for a simpler, less predictable order
A shuffled playlist is a reasonable starting point when occasional repeats are acceptable. But randomizing order is not the same as enforcing a minimum separation. A secondary OBS setup guide notes that VLC playlist shuffle may not produce a fresh shuffle on every loop or prevent an early repeat. Monitor several cycles, and check the order after a restart rather than assuming shuffle guarantees a particular result. iTechGuides’ OBS and VLC playlist guide is secondary guidance; it is not documentation of a guaranteed behavior across every OBS or VLC version.
#1 Best Overall
Use play history when repeats must be separated
First define “too often” for your channel: set a cooldown by elapsed time or by number of other tracks. Keep a durable play log, then exclude any track whose last play falls inside that window. Choose the next track only from the remaining eligible pool. This is an operational scheduling rule, not a YouTube feature.
- Set the rule: Decide how long a track must wait before it can return, and whether the limit is measured in hours or intervening songs.
- Record plays persistently: Store each track’s identity and play time somewhere that survives a playlist loop and a restart. A log that resets at restart cannot enforce a cross-restart cooldown.
- Filter before selection: Remove tracks still inside the cooldown from the eligible pool, then choose from what remains.
- Decide what happens when the pool runs out: Permit the oldest track to repeat, add more music, or pause the stream. Make the policy clear to anyone managing the channel.
- Test the edge cases: Check what happens after a restart, after editing the playlist while live, and when few or no tracks are eligible.
These steps describe the logic a strict no-repeat setup needs; they do not imply that OBS, YouTube, or a particular scheduler provides a built-in cooldown setting. When choosing a playout system, verify that it preserves history across restarts, lets you configure a repeat gap, handles an exhausted pool as you intend, supports playlist changes while live, and provides suitable monitoring and recovery.

Check music rights separately from playback availability
A song’s availability in YouTube Music does not establish permission to retransmit it in a live channel. YouTube’s Creator Music guidance describes licensing and availability for eligible U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, but a surfaced license’s permitted uses must be checked individually. Do not assume a Creator Music license covers a continuous livestream: verify its territory, livestream, monetization, and archive terms before use.
Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every composition and sound recording in the broadcast. Permission for one part of a track may not cover all relevant rights, and a viewer subscription is not a broadcast license. Check the operative YouTube terms and the documentation from the applicable rights holders or licensors before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your priority is keeping uploaded videos playing on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera, and it does not select tracks according to a history-based cooldown. If a strict repeat gap matters, use a playout workflow that enforces that rule.
