You can build a continuous YouTube lofi stream by preparing compatible media, listing the playlist files in an FFmpeg concat manifest, and sending the resulting audio and video to YouTube Live. The concat demuxer does not make mismatched files compatible, and a playlist command alone cannot guarantee 24/7 operation: you also need to test the stream, monitor the encoder and connection, and plan how to recover from failures.
Choose the right FFmpeg concat method
FFmpeg offers two different approaches that are easy to confuse. The concat demuxer reads files sequentially and adjusts timestamps; it is a good fit when the listed files expose the same streams and compatible properties, including codecs and time bases. It does not normalize media with different formats.

| Approach | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Files that already have matching stream layouts and compatible codecs and time bases. | Usually avoids re-encoding, but mismatched inputs may fail or produce problems. |
| Concat filter | Inputs that need filtering or re-encoding to create a consistent output. | More control over conversion and transitions, with the processing cost of encoding. |
For the demuxer’s requirements and the distinction between these methods, see FFmpeg’s concat FAQ.
Prepare the lofi audio and visual assets
Check the audio playlist
Inventory the tracks before making the manifest. Confirm that the files can be read by the FFmpeg process and that their stream layouts, codecs, and time bases are compatible for demuxer concatenation. If they differ, normalize them into a consistent set of files first, or use a filter-and-re-encode workflow rather than assuming the demuxer will convert them.

Decide how video will accompany the music
A lofi stream can use a static image, a looping visual, or a sequence of video segments. For an audio-first setup, the visual can be assembled as a separate video input while the playlist supplies audio, but the exact input mapping and filter graph depend on the assets and installed FFmpeg build. Validate those choices locally before connecting to YouTube; there is no universal command that can safely map every combination of tracks and visuals.
Create the concat playlist manifest
Make a plain-text manifest with one file directive per track. This minimal example uses absolute paths:
ffconcat version 1.0
file '/media/lofi/track-001.mp3'
file '/media/lofi/track-002.mp3'
file '/media/lofi/track-003.mp3'
Save it somewhere the FFmpeg process can access, and make sure each path points to the intended file. Filenames containing quotes or other special characters need appropriate escaping. Relative-path and safe-path behavior depend on how the manifest is invoked, so check the installed FFmpeg concat documentation before deploying it.

Account for file durations
The concat demuxer uses each file’s duration to place the next one. If duration metadata is inaccurate, transitions can have timestamp artifacts; the manifest’s duration directive can override a file’s stored duration when necessary. Check the output around transitions rather than assuming that a manifest which opens will play cleanly throughout.
Validate the playlist before streaming
- Run a local test. Decode or create a short test output from the manifest before sending anything to YouTube.
- Check every transition. Listen for gaps, cut-offs, or missing audio, and verify that timestamps continue as expected.
- Check the visual and mappings. Confirm the intended video appears and that audio is mapped from the playlist rather than an unintended input.
- Test representative material. Use audio and visual movement similar to what the live stream will contain. YouTube specifically recommends testing with similar audio and motion before starting a live stream.
Configure YouTube Live and FFmpeg output
Get the stream URL and protect the key
Create or select the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then copy its stream URL and key into your encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, source-control repository, or log. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. See YouTube’s guidance on stream keys.
Match the encoder to YouTube’s settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. RTMPS is the encrypted transport option YouTube recommends. The supported bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose a value from YouTube’s table for your actual output rather than treating one bitrate as right for every lofi stream.

YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. Its guidance supports up to 60 fps. Check the current table and settings before going live, then make the FFmpeg output match them. The exact command and whether you can copy streams or need to transcode depend on your media, desired output, and FFmpeg build; test the complete configuration rather than deploying a generic command unmodified. Current details are on YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page.
Plan for continuous operation
A 24/7 stream needs more than a playlist: it depends on the machine or hosted compute, access to the media, network path, and someone or something able to detect and recover from a failure. The appropriate compute and hosting arrangement depends on resolution, frame rate, encoders, input formats, and whether you process locally or remotely; there is no universal server size established here.
- Keep the media available to the running process, including after restarts.
- Capture FFmpeg logs and set up an alert for process exit or stalled output.
- Decide who or what will restart the encoder and re-establish the YouTube connection if either fails.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while live, especially during initial setup.
- Leave network capacity beyond the selected stream bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom for the relevant bandwidth calculation; allow for other traffic and any simultaneous backup stream as well.
These are operational measures, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream; its recommendations are described in YouTube’s live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common FFmpeg concat and live-stream problems
Concat fails or a track will not open
Check that every manifest path is readable by the FFmpeg process and correctly escaped. Then inspect the inputs’ streams and properties. If the files have incompatible stream layouts, codecs, or time bases, normalize them or use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes to a consistent output.
Audio glitches or timestamp artifacts at a transition
Check the file’s duration metadata and compare it with actual playback. Since the demuxer uses duration to place the next file, incorrect metadata can affect transitions; use the duration directive when an override is needed, then test that transition again.

The broadcast stops after the encoder exits or the connection drops
A concat manifest does not supervise FFmpeg or recover a dropped connection. Check process logs and alerts, then use the restart and reconnection procedure you planned for the machine or hosted environment. Test that recovery procedure before relying on the setup unattended.
