Short answer: YouTube can make it easier to reconnect an encoder by reusing a stream key and settings, but it does not promise to resume a locally looped video at the point where it stopped. Whether the video reloads, restarts from the beginning, or resumes depends on the encoder and how its source is configured. To recover, restore the encoder’s feed, verify the correct stream key and preview, and follow the right Go live flow for the event.
What survives an encoder restart—and what does not
There are two separate things to restore: the YouTube live event and the video loop inside your encoder. YouTube receives the encoder’s outgoing feed; it does not control the encoder’s local playback position. A reusable stream key can save setup time, but it does not preserve the loop position or guarantee that a restarted encoder resumes automatically.

After a restart, the encoder may reload the video and begin at the start, resume at a previous position, or fail to load the source. The result depends on the software, version, source configuration, and restart behavior. YouTube’s guidance does not specify how OBS or another encoder handles local loop persistence.
Set up YouTube so reconnecting takes less work
Reuse the stream key and settings
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and use a custom stream key if you want a reusable key. YouTube describes the key as the credential and destination information your encoder uses; a custom key can be reused unless you reset it. When creating another stream, “Reuse settings” copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Enter the key and YouTube server URL in the encoder, then save the configuration if your encoder supports it. Treat the key like a credential: do not share it publicly, and reset it if you think someone else has access.
Decide whether to enable auto-start
With auto-start enabled, YouTube lets you start streaming from the encoder. That can simplify a reconnect for an event configured that way, but it is not a guarantee that YouTube will restore the local loop or automatically put every event back into the live state.
Handle scheduled streams as a separate case
For a scheduled event, YouTube’s encoder instructions say to wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click “Go live.” Do not assume a reconnecting encoder alone will restart the scheduled broadcast. Check the event’s state and use the control-room action when required. The documented setup flow is in YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.

Recover the stream after the encoder restarts
- Confirm the encoder and source are running. Check that the encoder process restarted, the intended video is loaded, and looping is still enabled. If the source is missing or stopped, reload it and verify whether it begins at the start or resumes.
- Check the destination and key. Confirm the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube server URL with the key assigned to the event. If YouTube reports a third-party encoder start error, its troubleshooting guidance says to retrieve a stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps.
- Wait for the preview and check stream health. In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube is receiving the expected picture and audio and review any stream-health messages.
- Put the event live using its configured flow. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and click “Go live” if prompted. For an event with auto-start enabled, the encoder can initiate the stream, but still verify the event state.
- Check the viewer-facing result. Open the channel or watch page to confirm playback, and listen and watch long enough to catch a silent or frozen feed. If you record locally, confirm that the archive file is growing.
Choose reconnect or backup failover
One encoder with automatic reconnect
A single encoder is simpler and may be sufficient when a brief interruption is acceptable. Before relying on it, check three separate behaviors in your encoder: whether it reconnects to YouTube, whether it reloads the video source after a process or host restart, and whether the source loops from the beginning or resumes. Test the exact restart scenario you expect—closing the encoder, rebooting the computer, or losing the network are not necessarily equivalent.
Primary and backup encoders
A backup encoder can be appropriate when continuity matters more than simplicity. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that playback rolls to the backup. Test the actual viewer player transition, not only whether the backup encoder appears to be sending.
Before deployment, confirm how your encoder or streaming platform configures the primary and backup feeds, whether their sources are synchronized, and whether they rely on independent power and network connections. YouTube’s failover advice does not define the setup details for every third-party encoder. Its broader event guidance also recommends monitoring audio and video quality. Test before leaving a loop unattended
- Restart the encoder or host using the same method that could fail during the real broadcast.
- Check whether the video source reloads, and note whether playback starts over or resumes.
- Verify that the encoder reconnects with the intended key and YouTube destination.
- Check Live Control Room for a preview, stream-health messages, and the correct live-event state.
- Watch the channel or event page through the recovery, including the transition if you use a backup encoder.
- Check picture, audio, and any local archive file rather than assuming a connected encoder means viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance concerns recording availability; it is not a promise that a loop will survive encoder downtime or resume at its old position. The limit and behavior are described in YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Common restart problems and fixes
YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed
Check that the encoder is running, its network connection is available, and the configured server URL and stream key match the event. If the encoder reports a start error, retrieve the key from Live Control Room and update the encoder.
The preview appears, but the event is not live
Check whether the event is scheduled and whether it requires you to click “Go live” after the preview appears. Auto-start behavior depends on the event configuration; a preview alone does not confirm that viewers can watch.

The stream returns, but the video starts at the beginning
This is local source behavior, not a YouTube playback-position recovery setting. Check the encoder’s source reload and restart options, and test whether it can resume a file after the kind of restart you expect. If it cannot, plan for playback to begin again or choose a workflow whose restart behavior you have verified.
The stream reconnects, but the picture or sound is wrong
Confirm that the intended media source is active, that audio is present, and that the feed is moving on the viewer-facing page. YouTube recommends ongoing audio and video monitoring; an encoder reporting a connection is not by itself proof of usable playback.
A backup encoder does not take over cleanly
Test failover before the event by stopping the primary or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then inspect what viewers see. Review synchronization, network and power dependencies, and the platform-specific failover setup with your encoder documentation.

Copyright and long-running stream checks
A stable encoder does not make a video eligible to stream. Use footage, music, and other material you have the rights to broadcast, and review YouTube’s rules for live streaming and monetization separately. Repeating content does not by itself establish that you have permission to use it or that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements. Check the event and channel for copyright notices or restrictions before relying on a loop.
