To resume a YouTube stream after a VPS reboot, configure the encoder—often FFmpeg—as a boot-enabled service with a restart policy, then verify that it reconnects to YouTube and that the broadcast itself is live. These are separate checks: a service can be running without sending media, and incoming media does not by itself prove a scheduled broadcast is live.
What needs to recover after a reboot
A reliable setup has several layers. The VPS must start the encoder after boot; the encoder must have access to its input and reconnect or send output; and YouTube must be receiving the stream in the intended broadcast. A service manager handles process startup and supervision, but it does not automatically handle every network failure or YouTube broadcast action.

- Process recovery: the service manager can restart an encoder that exits.
- Connection recovery: the encoder can reconnect when a supported network error occurs.
- Broadcast recovery: YouTube receives the media and the broadcast is in the appropriate state.
The exact service file and command depend on your VPS operating system and version, init system, FFmpeg command, input source, output protocol, and whether the YouTube stream is scheduled or managed continuously. Treat the example pattern below as a starting point to adapt, not a universal unit file.
Prepare the YouTube stream and encoder
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Obtain the stream URL and stream key for the intended stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires these values to send the video. See YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance.
- Configure the encoder. Put the stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s output settings or command. Confirm that the encoder can read the chosen input and that the service account will have permission to access any files it needs.
- Choose the intended ingest URL. YouTube says RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. Live Control Room may display an ordinary RTMP URL by default, so select the RTMPS URL if that is what you intend to use and verify that your encoder supports it. Consult YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key as a password. Restrict access to service configuration and logs; do not put it in a public repository or expose it in shell history. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube and update the protected service configuration.
Run FFmpeg as a boot-enabled service
On a Linux VPS that uses systemd, the general pattern is to create a service that runs your actual FFmpeg command, configure it to restart if it exits, and enable it at boot. A community Ubuntu deployment illustrates an FFmpeg unit with Restart=always and enabling it with systemctl enable --now; this is an example pattern, not official YouTube guidance or a tested recipe for every workload. See the community deployment example.

The P2 AMD Ryzen 4300U Mini PC is complemented by Gigabit LAN, WiFi and Bluetooth, so nothing stands in the way of a productive working environment.
- Make the encoder command work manually first. Run it in a controlled test and verify that it reads the input and reaches the expected YouTube ingest. Do not build a boot service around a command whose paths, permissions, or output settings are still uncertain.
- Create a systemd unit for that command. Set the correct executable, arguments, working directory, and service user for your VPS. Keep credentials in a protected configuration mechanism rather than copying a key into a shared script or repository.
- Set an appropriate restart policy. A policy such as
Restart=alwayscan make systemd restart a process that exits. Choose restart limits and delays deliberately for the host and workload; no single policy or retry interval is established for every stream. - Enable and start the service. The community example uses
systemctl enable --nowto enable the unit at boot and start it immediately. Substitute your real unit name and confirm the command succeeds. - Inspect status and logs. Confirm the service is enabled and running, then inspect its logs for failed input opens, invalid options, permission errors, or connection problems. A running process alone is not a successful stream.
If your VPS does not use systemd, use the boot and supervision mechanism appropriate to its operating system. The available setup details do not establish a universal service definition for other init systems.
Handle network reconnects separately
FFmpeg’s protocol reconnect options address certain connection failures while the FFmpeg process is already running. Its documentation describes controls for reconnecting after selected network errors, treating EOF as an error for live or endless sources, limiting retries, and limiting retry delays. Which flags apply depends on the input or output protocol and the installed FFmpeg version; check the FFmpeg protocol documentation for that version.

Reconnect options do not start FFmpeg after a VPS reboot. Conversely, a boot-enabled service does not guarantee that an encoder with a broken input or disconnected output will recover. Configure and verify both layers where the workload requires them.
Confirm YouTube is actually live
After a planned reboot, check the encoder process and its logs, then check Live Control Room for incoming preview or media and the broadcast’s state. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions say to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and click Go live in Live Control Room when ready. A restarted process does not automatically perform that action.

This distinction also appears in YouTube’s Live Streaming API: a stream resource describes how audio and video are transmitted, while a broadcast resource represents the broadcast. A continuously managed broadcast may need lifecycle automation beyond restarting FFmpeg. Do not assume the API will create or promote a broadcast unless your particular implementation is designed and verified to do so.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test recovery before relying on it
- Choose a maintenance window and a test broadcast appropriate to your channel; avoid using a reboot test as the first validation of a critical unattended stream.
- Confirm the service is enabled for boot and note its current status and logs.
- Reboot the VPS using the host’s normal procedure.
- After startup, check whether the service started and whether FFmpeg remains running. Read the logs for immediate exits or repeated failures.
- In Live Control Room, verify incoming preview or media and inspect the broadcast state. For a scheduled broadcast, carry out the required Go live action when appropriate.
- Test the failure cases that matter to your setup, including missing input, network interruption, and credential changes, without assuming one successful reboot proves all recovery paths.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is archive guidance, not a promise that a stream will reconnect or resume after a VPS reboot.

Troubleshoot common failures
- It works when started manually but not after reboot: check that the service is enabled at boot, that its unit name is correct, and that the service user can access the executable, working directory, input files, and configuration.
- The service starts, then exits: inspect service and FFmpeg logs for missing inputs, invalid options, permission errors, or incorrect credentials or configuration. Fix the underlying error before relying on the restart policy.
- FFmpeg stays running but YouTube shows no incoming media: check the input, output URL and key, chosen protocol, network path, and applicable FFmpeg reconnect settings. Confirm the flags against the installed version’s documentation.
- YouTube receives media but viewers cannot watch: inspect the preview, visibility, broadcast status, and any scheduled Go live action in Live Control Room.
- The key may have leaked: rotate the stream key in YouTube and update the protected service configuration. Review logs and scripts for any remaining exposed copy.
- The process is healthy but the broadcast is not: check ingest and broadcast state separately. YouTube treats the stream and broadcast as distinct resources; a running encoder is not proof of an audience-facing live broadcast.
Choose how much supervision you need
A basic service-manager unit is often enough to start a command at boot and restart it after an exit. More elaborate supervision may also monitor whether the input is healthy, whether output is stale, and whether YouTube’s broadcast state needs attention. When comparing approaches, consider setup complexity, detection of a hung process, restart loops and backoff, credential protection, persistence across reboot, logging and alerts, and whether scheduled-stream lifecycle actions are required. The right choice depends on the host and broadcast workflow; the documented examples do not establish one universal supervisor.
Or let it run in the cloud
