To run a prerecorded seasonal promotion as a continuous YouTube Live broadcast, prepare a rights-cleared video, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, then use FFmpeg’s -re and -stream_loop -1 input options to pace and repeat the file while sending it to YouTube’s ingest server. Test the exact file and settings in Live Control Room before promoting the event; a running FFmpeg process alone does not confirm a healthy stream.
What you need before starting
- A finished promotion video with an intentional aspect ratio and audio track.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can encode the chosen video settings and remain on for the broadcast.
- A reliable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the video bitrate plus audio and network overhead.
- Access to YouTube Studio to create or schedule the live stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key.
- Rights to use the video, product images, logos, music, and any other material in the promotion.
This method streams a file from a computer; it is not a camera broadcast. The loop is continuous until you stop the encoder or the connection otherwise ends. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely, while -re reads it at its native frame rate so file output is paced like a live stream. Put both options before the -i input they apply to. FFmpeg’s documentation describes these options; it also cautions against using low read rates on real capture or live inputs, where packet loss can result.

Prepare a promotion that works as a loop
Review the beginning and end
Export the promotion as a video file with the intended audio and aspect ratio. Watch the final seconds followed by the opening seconds: a hard cut, sudden silence, or music jump can make each repeat obvious. Adjust the edit if needed. FFmpeg repeats the file; it does not make the boundary seamless automatically.
Check quality and rights
Use source material that the store owns or is permitted to use, including music, product photography, graphics, and brand marks. Preview the exported file at full size and listen to its audio. Keep its native quality where practical; enlarging a small or low-quality source solely to claim a higher resolution will not add detail.

Create the YouTube Live event and get the ingest details
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule one. Scheduling is useful when you want an event page and time to promote the broadcast.
- Open the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder.
- Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a public tutorial, screenshot, repository, or shared command transcript. Consider storing it in a protected script or configuration and account for whether your operating system exposes command-line arguments to other local users or processes.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. The server URL and key are credentials for sending the broadcast to your channel; treat the key like a password.
Choose a protocol and encoding settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for typical encoder ingest. Its encoder guidance also describes HLS as an option for some codec and HDR needs; HLS sends segments and has higher latency. For a straightforward SDR workflow, H.264 video with AAC audio is a conservative, broadly supported choice. Check YouTube’s current supported protocol, codec, and bitrate guidance for your selected output rather than assuming one command fits every resolution or frame rate.

Choose resolution and frame rate based on the source, your upload capacity, and the computer’s ability to encode consistently. The example below assumes 1080p30 H.264 SDR. Its -g 60 setting is a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps. For a different frame rate, resolution, source, or protocol, adjust the settings and verify them against YouTube’s current guidance.

Loop the video with FFmpeg
First inspect the file’s streams and properties with a media-inspection tool such as ffprobe, which is distributed with FFmpeg. Confirm its video dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, audio presence, and codecs before deciding whether to re-encode or try stream copy.
The following is an illustrative command template, not an official YouTube command, a tested guarantee, or a substitute for checking your own input and FFmpeg build. Replace the filename and destination placeholders with valid values. Do not paste a real stream key into a command that may be saved in shell history or exposed in process listings.

Re-encode or copy the source streams?
Re-encoding can normalize output to settings such as H.264 video and AAC audio, but it consumes compute and can reduce quality if the encoder settings or source are unsuitable. FFmpeg also supports -c copy, which avoids re-encoding; whether it works depends on the input codecs, container, timestamps, and YouTube’s output requirements. Neither approach is guaranteed for every file. Inspect the media and test the complete workflow before relying on it.

Test before the scheduled broadcast and monitor it live
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using the same file characteristics, motion, and audio as the planned promotion.
- Watch the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that picture and audio are present and that the displayed resolution is what you expect.
- Check stream-health messages and correct warnings before inviting viewers or starting promotion.
- During the broadcast, keep Live Control Room open and monitor health messages. If the dashboard reports a problem, diagnose that warning rather than assuming FFmpeg’s successful process output means YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio, then monitoring health and messages during the event. Its LiveStreams API documentation describes health status and configuration issue categories that include bitrate, codec, audio, and frame-rate problems. YouTube’s encoder guide says to wait for the preview and use the Live Control Room’s Go live action where the workflow calls for it.

End the stream and understand archiving
When the promotion is finished, stop the FFmpeg encoder and end the event in Live Control Room according to the workflow you chose. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on automatic archive availability for broadcasts lasting longer than that threshold.
Rights, reused content, and monetization
Putting a video through FFmpeg or broadcasting it live does not grant rights to its contents, change YouTube’s copyright rules, or guarantee monetization. Use music, images, footage, and other material only when the store owns it or has appropriate permission; copyright and monetization eligibility are separate questions.
YouTube’s monetization policy update dated July 15, 2025 renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material falls under that policy. The policy says monetized content should be original and authentic, and reused material must show meaningful value or difference to qualify under reused-content guidance. Permission to use an asset alone does not guarantee YouTube Partner Program eligibility. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies as well as applicable copyright rules.
